Subject: RE: RIP General H Norman SchwartzkopfI was just reminded of a story about how Schwartzkopf once flew to where his troops in Vietnam were trapped in a minefield and then went into the minefield to get the troops out. 4 or so mines went off and he was wounded as he was holding a wounded troop down to keep him from setting off more mines. He then told the engineers to mark the mines with shaving cream and the men walked out. As a former combat engineer, I remembered that story when my troops were clearing mines to get the crew of a helicopter to safety when they landed on a hilltop minefield. The troops who cleared the lane had shaving cream and spray paint. Metal sets off some mines. So the little flags are no good. He really was a troop-first leader. Someone to emulate. |
