Subject: How to read a weather forcast?

Maybe a dumb question, but perhaps after today I'll never have to ask it again.

When looking at a weather forecast, is the low temp given supposed to be how cold it will get at night or how cold it will be in the morning?  For example, on New Year's Day in Minneapolis I'm running a half marathon.  The weather channel forecast for that day says High 19, Low 12.  So does that mean the coldest it might be as the sun comes up is 12, or that later on that evening it will get down to 12 degrees.  Hence the morning low is actually going to be closer to the previous day's low, which is -4 degrees.

Here's the forecast, http://www.weather.com/weather/5-day/Minneapolis+MN+USMN0503:1:US, what should I expect the morning of the race, say around 9am?

Try this: go to the day your race is, click details then click hour by hour.

Have a great race!

Overnight lows are the lowest temp that will be seen that night, usually just before sun-up.

It does happen where the low will be at midnight (warm through the night), this is the case if there is a front that is moving thru the region.

The low temperature as reported is just the forecaster low for that day.

As said earlier your best bet is for an hourly forecast.

It's gonna be cold

Try this link, the -4 is the night before, the 9 is the night of New Year's Day

Now the hourly forecast is available, looks like the temp will be 0 at race time.  Awesome.

Yeah, I always look at the hourly. I've seen enough times that the high is at midnight! I'll believe anything. Good luck with the race...

The coldest part of the night is the hour before sunrise (makes sense because the sun has been gone the longest) and generally the warmest part of the day is just after mid-day depending on the time of year. In the winter the warmest part of the day is earlier (2-3) and summer later (4-5). of course that may vary a little depending on if you live in the north or the south.

People race when it's ZERO DEGREES? Tell me this is an inside race and you all are pulling this Florida boy's leg.

No, it was an outdoor half marathon.  Streets were well plowed so it wasn't slick or anything, just miserably cold.  It ended up actually being a few degrees below zero at the start.  I think we had something like 600 runners doing the half, and another couple thousand doing the 10k and 5k.
