Yet another one:

I have to get a Tablet for work.  With this I'll need wireless service.  They already pay for my phone and they will pay for the wireless service on the tablet too, so money is not a part of decision process here.  My ONLY consideration is functionality.  They have given me the option of:

A) activate the wifi hotspot feature on my phone and get a tablet that is only wifi

B) get a tablet with 4g LTE service

Pros to A:

-reducing my data plan to 5G + wifi hotspot will activate some other features on phone

-other devices will be able to sync up to my phone also

-virtually everywhere has wifi so hotspot usage would likely be minimal (most usage will be at work or home, both of which have wifi access)

Pros to B:

-I will go from Unlimited Data to 5G and could potentially run over (this is a real possibility, and don't know if overage charges are an issue or not)

-battery life of phone, this is my biggest concern as I barely make it through a day as is.  It is not uncommon for me to need to recharge around 4-6 pm on any given day.

So  are there any other considerations I'm missing and  WWCJD?

You should also check about tethering.  I have the BB Playbook which can tether to a blackberry phone.  We did this while travelling because I have wifi only ...  unless that's the same as the 'hot spot' thing - but it doesn't cost extra, i think, it just used the data plan on the phone.  Perhaps I am out of it but i thought it was cool way to get access when no wifi was available.

Ah, ok, thought maybe your carrier's marketing department had gotten ahead of itself and started calling LTE 5g or something.

If you are already close to the red line on data and battery with your phone, just get a tablet with LTE.

Tethering is gonna eat your phone battery big time. I would get the tablet with it's own data plan. I am in the same boat with the grandfathered unlimited data, I will do whatever I have to not to lose it.

I don't know if there is any speed reduction in tethering over going straight to the wireless either.

But either way, I would get the tab with it's own wireless plan.

If you have an android phone what I would do is pay for the FoxFi app so you can keep your unlimited data but still tether (the supreme court said that carriers can't charge you extra for tethering and have to allow you to use tethering apps). Then go on Amazon and spend 20-50 bucks (depending) on a new battery and a separate charger (so you can always have a battery in the phone and another charging). Badabing badaboom!

You can try out FoxFi for free, it just has a data use restriction if you have the free version so it will quit working after so long. That way you can make sure it's compatible with your phone. I've used it quite a bit and wish I hadn't updated to the newer version with the data restriction, because it used to be unlimited use!

Getting one with 4g/LTE does not preclude you from using it on wifi when you are in range of a hotspot.

And for the few times that you aren't, and really need to use it, it will pay off.

Or, if you got the tether route, then since you're in range of wifi most of the time, your data usage on phone from the tablet should be pretty minimal.

What tablet(s) are you looking at?

If your company is going to pay for everything, don't complicate life and go with the tablet with data plan.

Edit:

Wait, adding a tablet to your plan will reduce your data allowance to 5GB? If so, then just tether from your phone's data plan.

I agree, get the 4G tablet. Then you can use wifi where there's wifi.

My company cell phone won't allow me to tether, so if you have a corporate data plan, it may not allow it. Just FYI.

What tablet(s) are you looking at?

iPad.  I know there's a new one coming out, but I don't care much about the minimal upgrades that are likely to be.  I decided on that one due to how tied into the apple system I am, but had it been a first time entry into tablets and mobile devices I'd have likely gone with the Nexus 10 and would go with a Nexus 4 phone.  They seem to be leading the pack right now.  Samsung's is great too, but Nexus is so much smoother an interface with no "bloatware".

I went with the 4G/LTE and it solved my phone battery problem too!!!!!  Win/win!!!  Phone is now more phone dedicated and less info related so the battery has been good.  Thanks COJ.
