Overall Rank = 155/294

Age Group Rank = 15/21
Pre-race routine:

Set up at 5:15am, went to registration to get my chip (since I got there at closing time the night before and they couldn't give me that part). Then talked for a bit with people and got body marked. Nothing exciting.
Event warmup:

A short run to the water - not quite enough.
Swim
  • 27m 30s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 50s / 100 meters
Comments:

Have to focus a lot on relaxing and getting into a groove. Feels like by time I do this, the swim portion is over.
What would you do differently?:

Work on sighting a bit - Garmin came out reporting 1.11 miles
Transition 1
  • 01m 47s
What would you do differently?:

Didn't have rubber bands to attach my shoes to the bike, but overall this was still decent transition.
Bike
  • 1h 30m 8s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Need to focus on the bike and hills a bit. Stopped to see if I had a flat because the hill was harder than I thought it should be.
Transition 2
  • 01m 21s
Run
  • 54m 33s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt hard that it should have been (but I was good with that), walked through water stations. Felt rough and like I was at 11:00/mile, so I was surprised about the sub 9:00/mile.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I could do different other than tike the bike easier, but with the hills I'm not sure I could have.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Probably that I was still recovering from a marathon 3 weeks prior and a hilly mud run the day before this. Two races same weekend limited some of the speed available.

Event comments:

Excellent post race party!

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

This plan is an advanced plan in terms of volume and intensity and appropriate for someone who is looking to go under 5:00 and as fast as 4:30. There isn’t a lot of fluff in the plan.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

Both the Lake Triathlon Shoe CX210TRI and the Lake Road Shoe CX225 offer distinct advantages. I tested both shoes and found them to be extremely comfortable, good looking and durable.

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.
