Subject: Cancer 'anniversary' gift ideas

Coming up is my SO's 5 year "tumor-versary". It's not 5 years cancer-free, but 5 from the initial one. We don't 'celebrate' the others, we don't acknowledge them. Anyway, every year we celebrate another year he didn't die.

The first couple of years, I gave him some Livestrong stuff. (keep Lance opinions out of this thread, they are not welcome) One year it was a cool, retro wool jersey from Mellow Johnny's. Last year we went on a trip and we did a helicopter tour (super fun). This year we will be on a trip at the same time, but the timing is just a coincidence and there won't be time for anything like that. One of his friends is coming to see him on that day and is giving him a "F*CK Cancer" bike jersey. That was my idea, and he stole it! (long story) So, I'm left without present.


I feel like for #5 it should be something more special and I am STUMPED. I'm usually really good at stuff like this. I could compile some kind of sentimental "look at all the cool stuff we've done in 5 years" thing, but, I don't have the energy for that and we have enough pictures and items from our travels on the walls.

So, how would you say, "I'm glad you didn't die that first time"??

Since you mentioned the helicopter ride, I'd think something along the "bucket list" line. Bungee jumping, parachute, etc. Even if it's not a daredevil stunt, just something he wants to do. Stuff you do together is always better than material items to me.

Heh. With his condition, he can't tolerate anything like that. No "G's", no force change, etc. Even plane rides can be troublesome, but he deals with that for the sake of the trip. (plus, he did all that stuff in the military)

I agree about the experiences over stuff, we are the same way. I'd have no problem calling the trip we're going on his celebration, but we're really going because I wanted to go. So, that's kind of a crappy deal (although he is more than happy about the trip).

Maybe I'll just pick a neat-ish place for dinner and have the kitchen bring a special dessert or something. *shrug*

I really appreciate the suggestions. I wish more people would respond though. Guess it's not a fun subject, but you gotta appreciate life with your loved ones while you have it!

I really suck at the whole gift giving thing - so I'm probably not going to be much help, but I've given Tony stuff from his favourite teams.  Nebraska cycling jersey, hat, socks one year.  A Cowboys jersey (even though it almost KILLED me to buy something related at all to the Cowboys) another year, and I really wanted to get him tickets to go see a game this year in Dallas, but it just wasn't in the cards. 

I'm also not really big on the sentimental stuff... though if I were in your situation I'd probably get a DQ Ice Cream cake (cuz they're the BEST) with "I'm glad you're not dead!" written on top.

Not a bad idea, but I got him a watch 2 years ago, rarely wears it. We're too 'sporty' and his life revolves around working out.

He got a tattoo for his birthday this year, "vive ut vivas" because there was a time that his age might not be a possibility. I'd get a tattoo, but it wouldn't have anything to do with that situation, so that's kind of pointless. That's an idea though, I can talk to him and see if he wants to get some on our trip.

he's not that into sports teams. He likes participating in them, running, cycling, etc. But, UGH, I'd never buy Cowgirls cr*p. That sucks.

The cake is funny! I'd do that! We won't be home though, so that'll be hard to pull off.
