Final Stretch
60F / 16C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 30m 14s
Overall Rank = 27/151
Age Group = M55-59
Age Group Rank = 1/8
Pre-race routine:

Normal Honey Nut Cheerios and banana for breakfast. Barb raced as well. We did not leave as early as in the past but still got into the RPU lot.
Event warmup:

Ran & biked some. Weather was looking threatening and they ended up delaying the start. We went back to car to wait out the weather delay. Once we got ready to go again it seemed as everything was rushed. My zipper on my 1 piece kit came undone and got stuck at the top. So I raced with a billowed top, secure up to the waist and then open until stuck at the neck
Swim
  • 34m 35s
  • 1642 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

I'm almost positive I did not swim this slow. I'm usually uner 30 minutes at Rochesterfest and my slowest time was last year at 30:57. I think maybe they got the delay for our wave off by the 3 minutes wave delay.

I felt I swam OK, at least as well as Buffalo plus the run portion always helps the swim time here.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

At the start I had trouble w/my left shoe. The strap came all the way out so I had to reach down and get it inserted in the right spot so I could close it. Not a big deal but took a few seconds extra. Fastest T1 ever at this race. 1st in AG +44 sec from 2nd
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 1h 09m 35s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 21.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Tough wind for this course. The cross wind was difficult at the top, you needed a significant lean. Then on the way back it was head wind. I had my fastest Olympic time on this course.
What would you do differently?:

NA
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

This was my slowest T2 time here by 8 sec. A little trouble with my helmet but nothing major. 3rd in AG -11 sec from 1st.
Run
  • 43m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

Just barely but another Oly 10k under a 7:00 pace. Back in 2008 I went 43:23 for a 6:59 pace.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not sure what the deal was with the swim time. They did not have a clock at the finish so you could tell your time based on your wave. I won my AG by 11:40, I would have won the 50-54 by 3:29 and 45-49 by 3:56. My swim wave was males 40+ so there should be no discrepancy on swim times.

Event comments:

The quality of this race has gone down over the years as Final Stretch took over from Bill and WinMultiSports. Less participants, not as good food and post race activities. Still a good local race.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
