Swim
Comments: No idea on final time, since my timing chip was apparenly mixed up with someone else's number. Roughest swim I've been involved in. The swim wave I was in was all males under 44, so it was every man for themself the first few hundred yards. Got hit twice in the face and pulled more than a few times. Didn't feel all that well in the water. Got a couple of mouthfuls of salt water, and the swells were 1-2 feet which wasn't doing my stomach much good either. Sighted once, and saw no one, thought I was in the lead :), then looked to the left and realized I was way off course. Current was pushing to the right, and I was supposed to be going left. After that, had to consiously feel like I was swimming to the left to fight the current/swells. What would you do differently?: Not much, I realize my swimming pretty much sucks, I'll be average at best. Transition 1
Comments: Long...long uphill run to transition. Probably about a 1/4 mile and did I mention it was all uphill. Felt sick when I got to my bike, sat down for a second to collect myself then got going. Bike
Comments: Again to split times. Felt sick right off the bat on the bike, got to the top of the first hill and felt like my heart was goign to come out of my chest. Then on the downhill, got really light headed and started weaving a bit. Slowed down a bit and took a hit of gatorade out of the water bottle and proceeded to throw it right back up. Fortunately there was no one behind me, and somehow I managed to miss my bike as well. Felt a little better after that episode, and tried to pick it up as best I can, but I really suffered on the few uphills, which are usually my strong suit. Tried to pound the downhills to make up some time, and overall, i think I managed to pass more people than passed me. Based on my cycle computer I did the leg in 33:50 which would put me around 21 mph. What would you do differently?: Not puke :). Transition 2
Comments: Again no split. Felt ok coming into transition, took a few extra moments to gather myself, since I knew the run was going to be a bi*ch. Not having any fluid on the bike, and having lost what I did have in my stomach, I knew was going to make for a long run. Run
Comments: No splits again. Was getting passed left and right on the run, and never passed one person. Which is the exact opposite of what usually happens on a run for me. Just tried to gut it out and go as fast as I can. It was a shame I was feeling so bad, because my legs felt great right off the bike. None of the brick feeling at all. Post race
Warm down: Jumped in water too cool off. Find some fluids to get in me. By my watch, final time was 1:19:31, but I can't confirm since there was a problem with my chip. It appears someone else got the chip assigned to my number (and I got his). This would be a little less than 2 min. slower than last year. I'll have to get the chip problem straightened out, since the time will affect my rankings (they had me coming in at 1:48, and I know I felt bad, but not that bad) What limited your ability to perform faster: Just not my day, sometimes you have those days, and today was it for me. Thought I was feeling good coming in, but it wasn't to be. I probably shouldnt' have spent 2 hours power skating with my son yesterday, then the whole family going to the movies (my dinner ended up being snacks at the movies), but the movie was great (Monster House) and it was quality time with my son working on his skating, which I wouldn't trade for anything. So I had to suffer a bit today for my indiscretions yesterday. One thing I learned though, no matter how short the distance you ahve to respect it. Event comments: Very well run race. Hartford marathon Foundation always puts on well run, well organized races....now if I can just get my timing snafu corrected... Last updated: 2006-07-23 12:00 AM
