Subject: Meet Bertha

I'm sure some of you know this but currently there is a huge project going on in Seattle and they are using the largest diameter tunneling machine in the world.

Anyway, her name is Bertha and she has hew own twitter account, which is pretty entertaining: https://twitter.com/BerthaDigsSR99

Also, here is the time lapse of her set-up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSa-F_8FRc0

That is amazing.  Seeing the man lifts in there really helped me grasp the scale.  That thing is huge.

I'm sure this is in the feed, but what is the project and the projected cost?

Similar to Boston's Big Dig project.  Moving elevated highway that passes through downtown Seattle underground.

It doesn't sound like we aren't going to get as much (any?) of the open public space Boston did, unfortunately.

*Also would have loved if we could have done something like The Highline in NYC with the old viaduct, but obviously that couldn't happen.

My wife was just at a convention in Seattle and really loved it there. That's all I know. Oh, and big stuff is cool.

Those digging machines are so massive and specialized, they are built specifically for the job.  They can't reuse them and cost millions upon millions just for themselves but can't logistically be reused.

The two that dug the English Channel just dug a side tunnel to go down and they just buried/cemented them in.

You can spend a small fortune on these pre-wrapped bundles of energy, thinking they offer magic ingredients-not true. “Energy” simply means “provides calories” and not “will make you feel energetic."
