OK, really gung ho on getting my first tri bike this year. Have completed number of sprints, couple Olys, and one half on a Trek 2.1 Apex 2012 with upgrades and decent wheels (Aura 5) and clip ons.

I am signed up for Ironman WI near the end of this year and want some advice on making the jump - or if I even should.

The bikes and general prices I have listed above with years of manufacture.

This is pretty much what I have narrowed it down to.

They do fit.

Of course I like to save money - but I also don't want to be kicking myself later for just not getting the best bike I can. And having to go thru the upgrade thing again. After this bike, I am done. That is where I want my head to be.

I am quite sure the Felt B16 has Ultegra mix, older P2 has 105, Felt b14 has sram rival, and I think the new Cervelo has 105.

I am not one to switch out group sets. I will however get new wheels for whatever I purchase.

I am kind of leaning towards the B16. It has got what I want (at least I think) - solid price, aero frame, internal cable routing, and solid group set.

But what am I missing? I also want it to be fast, but I also don't want to feel every darn bump in the road which is the sensation I got while riding that P2 last year. I know the wheels are crap that it comes with but you know. With that, I understand Cervelos to be faster?!

I have to admit too even though minor ... the '14 Felt B14 has bolts on seat and down tube which means I can put water wherever the heck I want. To me, it is annoying not to have that option even though I may just put bottle on aerobars, and off the seat post. But for training I may just throw on downtube.

Anyone have any legit advice here?

You know how it goes, then I look at the new '14 P2 and that frame is pretty money.

Thanks hope to get some insight. Mike

Another reason why I ask, is because I heard IM WI is hilly and tri bike may not even be worth the while to some ... and even though I may change my mind in the future I think this will be Ironman 140.6 one and done. I am lucky I am even doing this one with 4 small kids (supportive wife god bless her).

Well- you've got a selection of great choices there.  You couldn't make a mistake with any of them, and each is seemingly priced accordingly.

From a ride comfort standpoint- perhaps the B16 is the best choice.  I've got that frame on my B10- and it's just a smooth pleasure.  it's made for the long haul.

From a speed standpoint, either of the '14 models are probably pretty close, and the Felt is obviously the better deal.

But the new P2 has the same frame as the P3- so we're talking a pretty aero frame.  I haven't had the pleasure of riding the new P2/3 frame, but Cervelo has a great reputation and I'm sure it's quite solid.

I think you're the proverbial 'kid in the candy store'.   Buy the one that you fall in love with.  The one that you see yourself on for the next 20,000 miles.  The one that you'll want to go out into the garage and wipe the dust off of and just stare at.  3 years from now, the few hundred dollar difference won't matter.  Plus, since you're not a pro, the 15 second difference in aero isn't really going to affect your life either.

have fun- and post a picture when you decide.

Cervelo has a great (well deserved reputation), but I would pick the Felt B16. My wife bought a DA4W (which we switched out all the components on to get Di2 plus some other goodies) and the quality of that frame is just remarkable. I'm comparing it to the 20+ bikes we've owned between the two of us , and the 30+ I've worked on over the years. The inside of the frame says quite a bit about how quality oriented a company is and the Felts are CLEAN. Plus, customer service (had an issue with installing the Di2… totally my own doing though..) is amazing. A quick call and you have the answer immediately.

Get the 2014 P2. You are essentially getting a P3, just lower end components. That being said, the 105 will not hold you back by any means.

Well, after much deliberation ... and kicking the tires around so to speak - I decided on the 2014 Cervelo P2 54in.

I will post pictures as soon as a I get this baby from the shop - and dial it in on the Guru.

This will replace my Trek 2.1 Apex which has really been a great bike, and in all reality probably should have just stuck with ... but you know how it goes.

I am happy about it! The others are obviously sweet bikes, but this one fit the best IMO.

I took the advice of a couple of you and considered it all ... but a couple pieces stuck out. "Buy the one that you will ride for the next 20,000 ... and P3/P2 frame with the 105 not holding you back." That is kind of what it came down to for me ... and I feel that frame is great for quite a while.

Now, who wants to race?

Oh snap, they switched out the Fizik for the Adamo noseless tri saddle. I don't know which one, but I rode with it on the sample.

Any opinion on standard or compact version?

I guess it comes with it as a choice so I have to call today and tell them which one.

Standard vs. compact… it depends on a couple of things, first, terrain, then second you cycle and athletic back ground. For the vast majority of us non-pro's a compact is a much better option. You're better off staying in a gear you can spin with a tighter cassette than trying to chase a gear that is in between the ratios of a wider spaced cassette with a standard.

Keep in mind that a 50-11 is a taller gear than a 53-12, so you're not giving up anything….

Guys/gals ... here it is. Just picked it up today, after fitting etc. Happy to have her home. Now, if I can just ride it again ... still much snow up here in MI. 54inch - 19.96lbs with pedals attached which I think is awesome - and new prologue adamo saddle instead of fizik it comes with just for reference. That counts the Zipp 60's too which aren't really even all that light. Vittoria Rubino stock tires with tubes. Happy with the decision and thanks for the insights. All are great brands this one just fit best for my body type. Now, bring on Lieto.

Work your weakness. In the sport of triathlon, most coaches agree that you should spend the most time working on your weakest of the three sports. For many of you this will be swimming!
