Pre-race routine:

Bran flakes and blueberries for breakfast, with a banana just before the race.
Event warmup:

Biked 2 miles, ran c. 1/4 mile, swam c. 100 yards
Swim
  • 19m 39s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Terrible problems navigating, so new crawl skills broke down. Ended up doing c. 1/3 crawl, 1/3 SS, 1/3 BrS. I am not pleased with this, but then three weeks ago I couldn't swim halfway across the pool, so this is a step in the right direction.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim, especially in a straight line
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

If I'd been less winded by the poor swim, this would have gone much faster.
Bike
  • 55m 14s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 17.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Absolutely flat course, so none of the climbing my regular riding has made me better at.
What would you do differently?:

Aero bars would help a lot. Swim took too much out of me, so riding was not particularly strong.
Transition 2
  • 01m 57s
Run
  • 28m 42s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Very warm by this point--a drain.
What would you do differently?:

Went out too fast, so splits got longer each mile. Pace better, and learn some technique--too much lumbering and not enough running.
Post race
Event comments:

Times are nothing to brag about, but this was my first tri. I finished, stayed under 1:50, and managed a longer-than-usual sprint swim despite having really learned to swim only in the last few weeks. Felt comfortable in the open water (admittedly not too open).

Will try not to get attacked by a large dog the day before the race and thrown hard from the bike--race would be easier without bad bruises and road rash.

To work on: Swim technique (stroke and navigation); aero position on bike; more running training.

Nice job on your first tri Dan!! You learn so much by just getting out there and doing one. Keep up the good work. I have the August 1st shelbyville tri on my calendar. Appreciate the course info.

Great job on the event.  I had hoped to do this one but things came up.  I am still holding out hope for the one in August.  We'll see.  Thanks for the race report.  I was in Indy this past weekend and it was hot and humid.

Good Job! That was my first Tri as well and it was damn hot by the end of the run. Did you have trouble with the bees? I had one fly into the holes of my helmet and sting me! I was not abut to take of my helmet and stop.

That's a very impressive first time; nice job. Plenty of heat for me--last mile was a real shvitz--but no bees.
