Subject: Minor hit and run by car on bike On my way to work I was almost finished riding thru an intersection that had 4-way stop sign. I had stopped and looked, made eye contact w/ the car on my right who told me to go. Then a car pulls up to the stop sign on my left as I'm in the intersection, and then I hear them revv up and I'm directly in front of their car. I yell out and then speed up and the car hits my rear tire. I managed to stay on the bike even though my rim is a little bent and the axle or hub got tweaked so the tire would not spin. The car then sped away! I was unable to catch his license plate but it was a new black suv like a Lexus or Mazda. This was at the Cooke street and Pohukaina Street intersection, by UFC gym. This is the intersection w/ all the graffiti art work on the corners near Boca and Bike Factory bike shops.
Thank god I did not get hurt and my bike doesn't appear to have extensive damage. I had to disengage the rear brakes or the tire would not spin because the rim is not true or something. I then rode around the block trying to find that jerk but didn't find him. People at the intersection couldn't believe the driver left the scene and nobody got the license plate. My friends told me to call the cops but I don't feel right since I am not hurt and I don't have a license plate. But it is really lame how someone wouldn't stop and he KNEW he hit me because I will remember the sound of the car hitting my wheel and thinking omg that could be my leg. I have my first 70.3 a month away and I got pretty frazzled at this close call. I did wear a helmet although that wouldn't help a smashed/broken leg.
It's crazy that I go on long rides on way more dangerous roads and my simple 2 mile commute was the only time I ever had any kind of accident in 8 years of riding.
