Subject: Refurb Garmin 610--tech too old?

Hi all. I just got an email featuring a refurbished 610 with HRM for $150 shipped. Is this technology too old? I would like a full S/B/R watch, but obviously don't need one. I understand the 610 is not waterproof, but water resistant, so no swimming with it. However, I don't know whether or not that's a big deal. I currently use a basic Timex Ironman on race days. Thanks for your input.

I'm not that familiar with the 610, but I got my 310XT for under $200 shipped a while back and I LOVE IT. Does multisport mode and is waterproof. Might be worth looking into.

The 610 is a great watch! A lot of people still use it as a go-to for a run. It is small and does everything you need. $150 with a strap is a pretty good price, but as mentioned, the 310 is probably a better deal. There is an ebay auction link for a refurb 310 for $99 with the same 1 year warranty. You can get the HR strap for under $50 easy.

The big difference between the two is the addition of bike metrics and a much bigger battery in the 310. It is waterproof, but you would need to wear it under a swim cap to get a good GPS trace (although the same goes for every GPS watch). There are no pool swimming features...those are specific to the 910. The big downside of the 310 is the size and color. The 610 is much sleeker and not orange.

If you want a running-only watch, get the 610. If you want more stuff at the same price, get the 310. If you want pool swim, wait till the 920 drops. PErhaps it'll be amazing and worth the $500, but more likely the 910 will be marked way down, perhaps to ~$200.

Thanks guys.  DC Rainmaker said the swim cap 'trick' would work for the 610 as the watch isn't fully submerged and it isn't slapping the water.  It my be lame, but I don't want the size associated with the 310.

I have a few Garmin products and love them. The 310xt NEW with HR monitor is on Ebay for $169 / free ship which is a pretty good deal.

Then go for it! It is still one of the best running specific watches out there.

I had the 610 and had to return it within a year-- the band kept breaking at the attachment point. Garmin decided this was a flawed design and changed it in future versions. It doesn't have a hinged attachment, so it would break with the continued tension from closing it on my small wrist.

This may not be a problem if you have a large wrist.

The watch itself is great and has great features-- and no, the software technology is not too old. It was just the physical design that was a problem for me.

P.S. The successor is the 620 which is still a running-specific watch but has fixed this flaw (and has some other cool features like BTLE connectivity).
