Hey Leah & Dan,

What's this about a ride on the 27th. I don't think that I will be going up to the Ironman afterall. We just don't want to do the drive. So the good news is that I am free to ride. What's the plan.

I'm free on the 10th as well. I can do both.

Alternatively, you are welcome to ride with my group (Kristine & co.) either of those days.

Let me know what's up.

Other BTers are welcome too.

Jen

Not asking because I want to come on your ride, but rather because I don't really know how it works...

The whole group ride thing - does anyone ever do them on MTBs? It'd be pretty hard to keep up, I'd imagine. My cruising speed on reasonably hilly road rides is usually around 26 - 28km/h on a MTB. I'd imagine it's quite a bit higher for road bikers...

Also, do you super riders have any recommendations for where to go to get a "value priced" road or tri bike? Any recs for used bikes or know of anyone selling one?

I've checked at Sport Junkies, but can only imagine that they have a good amount of markup over what the same thing would cost elsewhere. Just kind of at a loss...would like to step into that ring, but have a very limited budget (one more year of school until I start earning money to pay back this giant mass of student loans...).

Haha, well, maybe "cruising" isn't the right word. I'm working fairly hard to go that fast.

I don't know, when I ride to work (Yaletown from Coquitlam), it's 26km and takes me just over an hour with all the traffic lights and crap. That's not exactly taking it easy, but not all out the whole time either. It's also mostly downhill. The same trip in reverse took me about 1:20. Whatever that means. I seriously don't know because I only ever ride by myself. I'd probably just be slower than you guys, but whatever.

I'll be keeping an eye out for a road bike...I'll probably go road over tri, but we'll see. Thanks for the tips!

So this ride...27th? What time?

Yeah, whatever speed, whatever distance. I'm good for anything.

Deputy, whereabouts are you. The ride is an out and back, so start with us and if you don't feel like keeping out (though it sounds like you can), then just keep going and turn around when you see us coming back.

HB is definitely rolling hills. Lots of downs to get speed on the uphills. I think there is only 1 hill that I have to stand on.

What route will you take from the 2nd Narrows/Leah's house? I'll head over the Lion's Gate and then start going backwards to your route until I meet up with you guys.

Great, I'm really looking forward to this and seeing you guys.

Jen

Usually the group rides I do won't be done on MTBs because of the speed. Our cruising speed is 32-36km/hr and going up to 45km/hr, so it is a bit more difficult to do that on a MTB. However this ride is all about fun, right guys, so I'm sure you'd be welcome to come out. Since you live in Coquitlam, you could probably hook up with Leah and Dan somewhere close to you.

As Leah said, Sport's Junkies sells on consignment, so you can find some good deals there. There is also Cheapskates which is like the same thing as Sport's Junkies except they have a store than only sells bikes. You can probably get a good deal new & used now as it is the end of the season.

My LBS is Caps South Shore Cycle in North Delta. All of the Caps stores are independentally owned an operated by the way, so I cannot speak for the quality of any of the others, but I don't think that Leah was speaking about the Delta store. Anyway, if you want to test out a road bike on an easier ride, I can probably set something up with the Monday night group ride out of Caps, so let me know.

Also let me know your budget for a bike and what size you are as I know of a few people selling some right now that are actually pretty good deals.

Thanks Leah. I wanted to know your route from the 2nd Narrows to LG.

I'll leave my house at 9am, do some laps of Stanley Park, then head over the Lion's Gate towards the 2nd Narrows and meet you somewhere on route.

Any BTers (or friends) are welcome to join me.

Looks like its going to be a great day for a ride!! And no killer hills! Yes!

Yeah everyone is welcome. The more the merrier.

Hey Jen,

I'm guessing I'm probably a 58cm. I'm 6' tall and wear 32" pants and ride a 18.5" hardtail mtb, which leaves lots of clearance for "protection" if a problem arises on the trails.

My budget would probably depend a fair amount on what was available, but it would ideally be (quite a bit) under $1000. I'd just like to get the most for my money. I'd be guessing I'd be hoping to get something similar to my mtb in terms of quality, which is a 2001 RM Stratos with a mix of XT, LX, and Deore components - so I guess that'd be something in the Tiagra/105/Ultegra range - more likely closer to Tiagra than Ultegra, if even Tiagra.

If you know of anything, I'd love to hear about it, thanks!

I'm going to check with Leah and if you don't make those times, you're buying the coffee.

We're going to Horseshoe Bay, not Starbucks!

I'll let you in on a little secret. Since you are coming all the way from Abbotsford just to ride with us, I would have bought you coffee anyway.

Thanks Jen!

The old student budget doesn't leave much room for "road bike purchase", but I'll make it happen if I can!

I'm 90% in for Sunday, just have to know where I should meet up with people. I only won't come if it'll get me in too much trouble at home considering I'm going to run like crazy on Saturday morning in Mundy (at least two laps) and then golf in the evening.

Okay, downtown peeps, here's my plan. Leave near my house at 0900. I live on Burrard and Robson, so I suggest we meet on the Northeast corner. Let me know if you are coming, so I can keep my eye out for you. You are welcome to leave stuff at my house, just PM me and I'll give you my cell number. We will leave at 0900, so that we will have the same amount of riding time as Leah's group.

From there we will do some laps of Stanley Park. We will leave Stanley Park and head over the Lion's Gate at 0945. This should put us on the North Van side of the Lion's Gate around 1000. From there we will go towards the 2nd Narrows to meet up with Leah's group. Then we'll turn around and head towards Horseshoe Bay.

There will be a stop in Horseshoe Bay, probably at the Blenz as they have a nice bike friendly patio, then it's off home.
