Pre-race routine:

Extra taping on the feet as this race involves river and stream crossings and larger than usual breakfast as it was a 2 1/2 hour bus trip to the start line.
Event warmup:

Nil. - wanted to rest R) adductor and its a long day with a hilly start.
Run
  • 5h 14m 11s
  • 42.2 kms
  • 07m 27s  min/km
Comments:

Great course and thankfully the rain held off- in fact it was even a bit sunny over the last hour.

Didn't expect the first 16km to be as hilly as it was - the course profile doesn't show the the many short steep climbs and descents.

The R) adductor slowly locked up over those early kms as the short climbs took their toll. By 18km, the lower abs on both sides had gone out in sympathy and were slowly tightening their grip and restricting my hip flexion as a protective mechanism. The last 24km was ugly and I was reduced to walking any moderate slope - up or down.

The final 6kms involved 14(!) crossings of the Arrow River - nothing too deep but I can see why the stop the race short if there has been rain in the mountains - as happened last year.

What would you do differently?:

R) adductor issue needs to be sorted!
Post race
Warm down:

Nil. Happy to just lie down and get the weight off my lower abs and groin.
(Does the free beer at the end count as a warm down technique?)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

R) adductor and groin strain.

Event comments:

Great course, scenic & challenging - a good introduction to trail racing.

Very well organised.

I own both a road bike and a tri bike. I am wondering which bike I should be riding during off season training, or does it matter?

My 1st triathlon, Xterra and the mess I made of myself. This wasn’t your regular triathlon, it was off-road.

The XTERRA off-road triathlons consist of a lake swim, a mountain bike trail ride, and a trail run. I decided to try the AZ Xtreme Desert XTERRA Tri as my 1st off-road triathlon, and my 3rd tri ever.
