TriWaco Triathlon - Sprint Course - Triathlon

Waco, Texas
United States
Tri-Now
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 14m 30s
Overall Rank = 33/334
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/21
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30. Breakfast (oatmeal with honey and almonds, pretzels with peanut butter, and an apple), toilet, headed out to transition at about 5:00.
Event warmup:

Easy 15' run.
Swim
  • 10m
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 30s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was only my second OWS ever. It was really hard. From the get-go, I felt like it took much more effort than in the pool. My breathing was not normal, breathing pretty much every stroke. Sighting was decent. Things cleared up in terms of spacing after the first turn. That helped.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more. Get into a good rhythm with my breathing.
Transition 1
  • 03m 2s
Comments:

Transition was a good distance from the water, and uphill. I knew I was going to put on socks and shoes, so I took my time. Took a sip of water at my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - while slow, I am happy with this. I'm not ready to try the flying mount. Some day, I suspect I'd be livid with a transition this slow, but that is still sometime in the future.
Bike
  • 34m 27s
  • 20 kms
  • 34.83 km/hr
Comments:

This was my best bike ride in terms of pace ever. Everything felt good, pushing it, but not too hard. Handling was decent.
What would you do differently?:

I am very happy with my execution today. I need to improve my cycling, but that's a matter of training and time, not race-day execution.
Transition 2
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

Same deal as T1. Not trying to get out of shoes while riding. Not there yet. Everything was relatively quick, but under control.
What would you do differently?:

At this point, nothing. I am not at the point where I would do a flying dismount.
Run
  • 25m 37s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Not too surprisingly, the run is where I did the best. I tried to go out a bit conservatively. It was definitely an effort, probably a bit harder than coach wanted. It was really humid, and everyone suffered on the run. I passed lots of folks, and tried to just keep pace. I picked it up as time went on - overall, I'm happy with the run.
What would you do differently?:

Probably would take some water at the second aid station.
Post race
Warm down:

What warm down?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of OWS experience. General newness to cycling.

Event comments:

I am really happy with this race. Goal was just to get comfortable and have fun. I feel like I met those goals with flying colors. Extremely happy with my bike, and the cherry on top was making the podium!

Tri Waco put on a good race. Very happy with the experience.

Keep up the good work. I'd love your run time in a stand alone 5k much less after a swim and bike. Especially with the heat and humidity we have had in north Texas.
I did a half marathon in Waco several years ago. I love the finish across that bridge in Waco. Scenic any time of year. Actually just realized my pic was taken right after that race in Waco. I ran it barefoot, in January, and it was raining and 32 the entire run. Still a beautiful area for an event, once I get my fitness in order, I may have to add that to the list.

Thank you both for the kind words. What I love most about this sport (and running) is the camaraderie. The guy who finished 4th in my AG came up and congratulated me and we had a brief chat. I've found that to be the norm rather than the exception. Passing folks (and being passed), words of encouragement were said. Really gives me some hope in mankind . . .

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
