Subject: HR monitor interference
Hi all,
Has anyone had issues in a gym where your HR monitor acted up around equipment such as treadmills? Mine is giving me fits, along with a lot of anxiety. Mostly at the start of a workout, my HR will gradually climb, then at around 110, it just goes to like 185 (the monitor does). Or, it will just say "nil 00" whatever that means. This only happens running. Not on the stationary bike. It will go to 180-185, then to 130 in less than a second. I don't feel any different, and when I take it manually, it seems normal. The only odd thing is that this happens at the start of the workout, and seems to work itself out as the workout goes on. I'm almost certain it is an anomaly and not me.

Yup, lost0ne's link should help.  I always moisten my chest area and the pads on the strap before starting out.  Then sweating takes care of the rest.

Your issue sounds like there is not enough moisture between your skin and the HR. I have had the same issue many times (mostly in winter cause of the dry air). I started putting a glob of aloe vera on the HR monitor before putting it on. When I really get annoyed, I have been known to lift my shirt and spit on the HR!

But, I have also had the true interference issue. Two different races I found that my Bike Garmin picked up my rack neighbor's Cadence monitor. No fun fooling with settings on your Garmin while doing 20 MPH!

I've spit, sweat, run it under the sink. The main thing was to get the sensor areas good and wet. Have never used an extra product to do this.
