Subject: RE: Drafting?! In a triathlon? Really?!Originally posted by Alpal
Happy Friday all!
Interested in what other posters thoughts are on draft-legal races. I have a tri this weekend and to my shock I've discovered it's draft legal. I didn't even know this was possible. Sorry but surely this belongs in Tour de France etc? Personally I'd gain no satisfaction from getting a good bike time through this means nor would I want some random capitalising on my hard pedalling work. -pinch of salt intended with this post
Or Olympic Triathlon. Or the ITU World Triathlon Series.
Draft-legal is nothing new. It's the way much of the world does Sprint, and sometimes Olympic, distance triathlon racing, even at the amateur level. The ITU amateur World Championship Sprint Triathlon is draft legal. It's probably harder than you think. If you think you're going to be able to latch onto a pack and easily ride at a nice, steady, 80% of FTP while the guys up front work harder to tow you along, you're wrong. Try it, and you'll likely be detached from the group after the first corner.
It's a triathlon, not a bike time trial. The bike split, alone, is irrelevant in either format. Even in non-draft triathlon, they don't give out medals in T2 for having a great ride. The bike leg is just part of a larger puzzle. Draft-legal just adds a bit more of an element of strategy. Edited by gary p 2019-02-14 9:23 AM
