Lets say you have 3 choices of wheelsets to use for your next race, money is no object. What do you choose? Answer the question on two fronts, first purely on performance, then on both performance and aesthetics. Keep in mind that each 50 grams is just over a tenth of a pound of spinning weight. For instance, the Mavic wheelset is 1lb less in weight than the HED wheelset. Although the Zipps are a bit heavier than the Ksirium's, they are more aero. The Hed's are the most aerodynamic but cannot be trued if they run out of true .... well, not by me anyways! |

Champion 6786  Two seat rocket plane | Subject: Depends on the course... I'd lean towards the Zipps UNLESS there is a whole lot of steep climbing on the course, then the nod goes to the Mavics. The advantage of an aero profile becomes more pronounced at higher speed. And at a certain point the advantage of aerodynamics surpasses the weight penalty (that's the theory anyway). Thus, if it's a climbing course where speeds are low, weight may be a bigger limiter of speed than aerodynamics. The opposite is true on a flatter course with higher speeds. |
