Okay, so which IM did you decide to do, and why? And was your reasoning really that important after the race was over?

For example, I live 1.5 hours from Louisville, so could get some rides in on the course, etc. But I don't want to swim in the OH River. Would the close distance be an important factor?

Or, my in-laws live in Phoenix, about 25-30 mins from Tempe, so likely free lodging, but I'd have to travel out there.

I'm sure it's a pretty individual choice, but I'd be interested in your reasons...lobstergirls thread on wanting in made me start thinking about it....

I did IMFL because:

  • It was within driving distance.
  • Late fall race fit well with my TNT coaching responsibilities.
  • Familiar with the course from racing the GCT.
  • Ocean swim!

I am doing IMWI as my first IM. I thought about IMLP because I live in upstate NY but I didn't want to deal with all the hills that placid brings on with my first IM race. Thought about IMAZ but training over the winter for a spring race didn't appeal to me.

The two main reasons I chose IMWI was 1) the climate and terrain is similar to what I train in and 2) if by chance I do qualify for Kona I qualify for next years Kona and don't have to turn around and do another IM race in the same year.

Good luck with your choice! NY is beautiful in July if you like hills!

I chose IMFL because:
-Since it was in Nov, I could follow a "normal traing schedule" which allowed me to my long runs in the milder fall weather and the race day weather is ususally mild.
-Florida in November is an easy sell to get friends and family to come down and cheer you on.
-The warm and clear water in the gulf is cool.
-A flat course was a plus since biking 112 miles then running a marathon was intimidating enough.
