Pre-race routine:

Well my dear sweet children woke up at 4:50 am- ahhh... did not have to get up this early- but oh well. Had pbj on toast and some water. Dropped the kids off by grandma and went up to Appleton. Well I only got a little lost- it seems everytime I drive alone to a race, I get lost. Need to go back to 1st grade and take a "how to follow directions 101" :) Yesterday I didnt think I was even going to be able to run today.. no laughing now..but I got kicked by a cow- right in the quad- damn hard by a psycho crazy cow. I could hardly bend my leg and couldnt put hardly any pressure on my leg- ugh. I used a lot of ice- some ibuprofen and some vicoden- and I was much better. Still sore- but unfortunately not really an excuse for being slow.
Event warmup:

No warm up- could have- probaly should have. Hey- I only used the bathroom once - that has got to be a record.
Run
  • 23m 30s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Not my best 5k- could have ran harder- but OK for a duathlon. I was in wave 12- the LAST wave to go out- actually went out with the last two waves AND the 5k... talk about- "get the heck out of my way" :) (this is much worse come the bike) there were quite a few hills, but a pretty decent course. I am so NOT used to running without my ipod.. I hate hearing how hard I breathe- it makes me think I am more tired then I am. I should probaly run more with out it.
What would you do differently?:

well run faster of course.
Transition 1
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

OK transition. Since I was in the LAST wave I was the FARTHEST form the run and bike in and out (can you see I am thrilled with this last wave thing??) Everything went well.. a little extra time getting my helmet strap buckled.
What would you do differently?:

register earlier so I am in an earlier wave which makes me closer to the in /outs
Bike
  • 1h 12m
  • 22 miles
  • 18.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Wow- the wind was pretty bad- nice when it wasnt blowing you all over the place though :) I seriously had a great time on the bike once we got out of town. In town it was really crowded and there was a little bike lane- hardly enough room for two people and then traffic to your left. So pretty much had to ride outside of the cones to pass anyone- which I of course HAD to do :). I honestly must have passed 200 people on the bike. I have never said "on your left" so many times :) I felt really strong and really fast... obviously all the fast people started way ahead of me because my bike split wasnt as good as I thought it was going to be. I could have even rode harder but thought why?? I am killing this course. Oh well nect time I am NOT lettung up- relentless baby. I stayed in aero the whole time too except for a few of the turns.
I really wanted/needed to drink moreon the bike- but was almost scared to let go with one hand because I thought the wind would blow me over!

What would you do differently?:

Ride it like you stole it :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

Not the best T2. I couldnt get my shoe strap un velcroed- WTF? Need to pracice getting out of my shoes while on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Um... move faster- not stop to put on make-up (kidding)
Run
  • 24m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I really thought I could easily do this in under 2 hours and when I saw I wasnt going to I let up a little bit- dumb ass. Everyone was slower with the wind. Also all the fast people were already finished so I ran the last 5K with a lot of walkers and pokey runners- so once again I was passing everyone and feeling faster then I was.
What would you do differently?:

dont let up. I do this to my self a lot. I realize I am not as fast as I had planned/wanted to be so I give up. I think OK- I am just not that fast- screw it. I NEED to stop doing this to myself.

Everyone keeps telling me I am overtraing- I AM NOT OVERTRAINING!!!!!!
So dont say it
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of whining and pouting- I am just a big baby-who likes to win- or at least place. I was 11th in the female division and would have placed in every other age group. In my last duathlon I was 3rd in my AG but 17th on my division- so I guess I wasnt THAT bad :) I just think with all this frickin training I am doing I should be FASTER.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No excuses

Event comments:

Fun race- nice course- a little too crowded on the beginning of the bike though.

Way to go Triplemom! Wow, I think your times rocked! I mean I live in the fox valley and went to go for a quickie ride this afternoon and nearly blew over with those winds. Thought of you all racing and figured you were all gaining huge strength in your quads with those headwinds.

I too can say I don't like hearing myself breathe when I run...sound like I'm having orgasms! ha well, not that over the top, but still lots of heavy breathing so I think.

Glad you didn't run into any more cows on the race

You are so fast...awesome!

Seems they always start us old ladies last (well you aren't as old as I am) which can make it tough to pass folks when you are speedy like you.

Glad the cow kick didn't hurt your race.

This sounds like a lot of fun...we have very few dus around here.

Congrats...11th female is awesome..you have a tough AG!

PS Have you considered getting an aero drink bottle that mounts between your areo bars...easier to get enough liquid in while racing.

So instead of a charley horse to the leg, do you call it a charley cow?  That dairy farm work is dangerous!  Good job on the race.

great race! Sounds like we had similar experiences on the bike. The beginning was TOO crowded. Man you are too hard on yourself: 11th in your division and 3 in your AG is awesome!

I do actually have an aero bottle-  I dont really like it- I need a longer straw.

I think I may have to stay away from the farm for like a week beofre my HIM

You must be accident prone!  Sounds like a fun race and a good reminder to always push it in a race! Good job.
