Hi All --

I have the triathlon bug, it seems. I love to exercise outside. This is definitely the sport for me. I'm a baby at this. I've never done anything like this, which is exaclty the reason I'm doing it now. As I turn 30, I WILL be a triathlete, dammit!

I am starting from square one here. I'm a terrible swimmer, I love to run (although I'm not good at it), and the last time I was on a bike it was my Scwhinn when I was a kid!

I studied dance in college (it was my minor), and after getting really out of shape over the last little while and finally getting the weight off -- by running, hiking, doing the Santa Monica Stairs, whatever, now I want to take it to another level, a level that none of my colleagues and friends believe I can acheive.

I want to do this for my own personal benefit, but it will feel great to prove everyone wrong.

I have a bum ankle (bad ligaments that I'm rehabbing now), and bad knees (meniscal tears in both that are too small to fix). Who wants to train with me?????

Karen

Hey Karen!

Welcome to BT. I am a former LA resident...and boy do I wish I were there right about now!! :-)

You are where most triathletes are when they start off...terrible swimmer (although you'll improve quickly), and not too spectacular at any one event. You are one up in that you enjoy running...most seem to groan when it comes time to run!

You are going to be a great triathlete because you have the main ingredients...desire and willpower!!

Go get 'em!

oh man, tell me i'm NOT going to do something and that pretty much guarantees i'll do it! (like when my boyfriend-now-husband and best friend both told me i wouldn't snow shoe to work after a blizzard - great guys, now i HAVE to do it!). anyway, welcome. you can do this! you are obviously determined. stick with it, take breaks when you need to w/ your injuries, but stick with it.

Welcome Karen!!! That tri bug bites hard and deep, sounds like you are hooked already!!! Your swimming will improve with time. I too started out a weak swimmer, but now I love it. Running is my passion, so no trouble there. And biking, well, I haven't riden much in the past 10 years, so I'm getting better slowly. I did my first 2 tri's on my ol' mtn bike, and will pick up my new Cannondale on Friday. Me, with a racing bike....GET OUT!!!! Yup, the bug bites HARD!!!!

Have fun!!!

HI Everyone !!

OMG I am so overwhelmed by all of your support, thank you!

so, my question to you guys: does anyone out there in Los Angeles know where I can get a slightly or "gently" used roadbike?

I don't have a lot of money for one..... My mom has one in Arizona that she never uses, but I dont' know when I'll see it!

I didn't have a road bike either when I started my training. I went to the gym and rode the stationary bike. It got kinda old but it's better than a treadmill cause you can read and all kinds of things with your hands free. The bad part of it is the saddles on stationary bikes always suck.

I KNOW!

Darn those stationary bikes!

But, it's great -- because I start out a little easy and then pretend I'm going uphill (i.e. level 15 or so)...and I stay on it for at least 10 miles....(since I have a bum ankle right now -- I am relegated to the darn stationary bikes).

I actually put on some nasty rap or rock music (you know -- the angry kind) :-) and I get rollin!

I love it!

I am volunteering at the Malibu Nautica Tri this weekend -- to see what it's all about. I'll be at the swim station. Say HI!

thanks again for the wonderful words of encouragement everyone. I'm so exicted about this.
