Subject: RE: Swim mask vs regular googles for OWSComing from a competitive swimming background I was 'old school' about my goggles and would only consider wearing regular goggles in open water.
BUT - I started having problems with them. I've yet to find a goggle that properly fits my face, so I've always had to crank them down really tight to keep water out. This is fine in a pool doing interval workouts, since I stop for each rest interval and slide my goggles off while recovering. In long OW swims, however, I wouldn't get this relief and eventually the pressure from the goggles caused serious pain on my cheek bones and around my eye socket. The first time I did the Chesapeake Bay swim it was nearly unbearable for the last 2 miles.
So I started using the Tyr Hydrovision mask, and I'm now completely sold on it for long OW swimming. It's smaller than most masks so there isn't a big drag from it. It has a great seal and never fills with water. It is UV protected, tinted, and perfect for outdoors. I only use it in OW, still using my Speedo goggles in the pool.
It is definitely worth checking out.
