Subject: bike stolen - WARNING: copious whining!

I'm super bummed.

My road bike was stolen out of my garage in Houston last night, while a couple of my friends were finishing loading my trailer (a job I thought was done the night before, but apparently the slightly-obsessive person I left in charge decided the contents of the trailer needed to be rearranged again.)  Anyway, the two of them were IN the trailer moving stuff around, when across the street, the bike walked away from my open garage.  With no front tire.

I sold my hybrid two months ago as part of getting ready for my move.  So now:  no bike, no money.  Yes, it was insured.  No, I can't afford the deductible right now.  I'm in a crazily uncomfortable amount of debt until my house in Houston sells, cannot in conscience add to my credit card balance for a bike.

It's okay.  I'm moving into my new Philadelphia apartment today and will probably be able to buy a cheap mountain bike soon - just something to ride around town.

But currently, I do not own a bike.  I am bummed.

Okay, whining over!  I still have a LOT to be grateful for, and will focus on that now.  Thanks for bearing with me.

I'm really sorry to hear that.  I don't think that was copious whining, though.  You are allowed to whine when your bike gets stolen. Personally, I didn't think that was excessive.

Thanks guys, the support is awesome.  Gotta love my BT support group!

Answers:

1.  My bike size was "extra small."  Schwinn doesn't use centimeters like everyone else.  I'm just under 5'3" with a VERY short torso, so the XS Fastback Compact Frame bike had the right top tube for me.  I had to put the seat pretty high to accommodate my legs, which are proportionally longer for my body.  Of course, the high seat only made me look really cool.  At least in my imagination!

2.  I've just moved to the Fairmount area.  My new apartment is on Woodstock Street, just behind the Eastern State Penitentiary!

3.  The Schwinn was blue and silver.  There's a good picture of it in Tag's album, here:  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/photo-thumbnails.asp?albumid=2277

He he.  The height difference between me and the other BTers in that pic always makes me giggle.

I'm getting moved into my new apartment this evening.  Maybe I can devote tomorrow afternoon to finding a cheap MTB or hybrid.  A fellow Philly BTer has already recommended a shop, and then yes there's Craigslist too!  A dear Texas BT friend has offered to send me his extra pedals if needed.  Awwwwww!!!!!   Feeling better already.

Cool area! I used to live at 18th and Green St.. Now I'm about a mile-something away by 18th and South St (I live on Bainbridge)... But still ride up by the Penitentiary all the time...

You're about a block from some really neat bars. London Grill is overpriced and the staff is snarky.. The firehouse is a great place for a beer outside, but the food is overpriced, as well.. Rembrandts has a really cool atmosphere... Bishop's Collar is about the coolest place in the whole neighborhood. Can get crowded, but so worth it! Bridgid's on 24th is also a really neat place!

And you really couldn't be in a better neighborhood to access the Skuykill River trail... Good job on the apartment!

Sorry to hear about the bike. If you need anything, please don't hesitate to ask.. Welcome to the neighborhood!

I am soooo sorry to hear about your bike.  TWO times I have had a bike stolen from my garage.....just reading your post makes me want to go and strangle someone.

RANT WARNING!!  RANT WARNING!!

The first time, my wife and I had finished loading the car and walked back inside....there a little longer than anticipated, say 5 minutes.  Left the garage door open.  Go out, get in the car and take off.  Get to the end of the street and my wife says, "hey, that guy has a bike just like yours"....and I say, "Huh?....oh yeah.....THAT IS MY BIKE!!!"  Jump out, run at him, absolutely fuming...."Give me my bike you piece of &^%##%^**%^$$%"  Just went up to him, pushed him, grabbed the bike, he starts running away....  Meanwhile, my cute, adorable, wonderful wife, gets into the driver's seat, and chases the motherfu&^%$$^& up onto the sidewalk.  The look on his face was priceless.  Didn't have a cell phone and he was long gone by the time we got back to the house, so I never called the police.

Second time, several years later and different neighborhood, not so lucky....wife trained for the LA marathon.....had the flu (like 102 temp) on raceday and had to bail.....very bummed about that....... I was out doing yardwork instead of cheering her on.  Left the garage open while I went to the back yard....bike gone.  Black Sunday.....it sucked.

I hope the SOB who took your bike gets hit by a bus while riding it.

Rant over

So sorry about the your bike... Farewell to Houston - the town where you can't leave you're garage open even for 1 minute unattended. Our first year living here we had 6 neighbors within 4 houses on either side have mowers, weed eaters and other yard tools stolen.... thankfully they didn't want "little tykes" toys or we would have been hit multiple times....

Enjoy Philly and the much nicer (aka cooler and soooo less humid) climate for training.
