Champion 26509 Sydney | Subject: Poison Apples Team Thread Welcome to the Running Challenge Seemingly innocent a poison apple shows no sign of evil, very appropriate for a team of newbies who might just out run everyone else! This team is also one of two (mostly) newbie teams in the competition, put together by your requests.
Your team line up is: 1. AmbulanceDriver 2. Baowolf 3. D001 4. Dimplespoo 5. Fielding 6. Husker Tri Girl 7. JasonBohn9 8. Jessicacrouchrt 9. Klgray 10. lyssa-gator 11. TRIFOR40 Please introduce yourself to your team below with your goals for the challenge and running in general, what they are training for as well as names and any other general info. You will also need to nominate/select/volunteer a Team Leader whose role will be to collect the commitments for each runner and collect your team results every Monday. Your running time must be logged in your BT Log for verification purposes, but you are responsible for reporting your weekly results to your Team Leader on Mondays, this is done by posting an update in your team thread in the challenges forum unless the team prefers another method. Attached to this post is an excel excel spreadsheet to be used by the Team Leader for your team tracking and should be sent to me on Tuesdays AM so I can get an challenge update post in the forum by Wednesday each week. The spreadsheet includes the details of any team members who have already made a challenge commitment. I will be maintaining a Team Leaders thread for any queries, questions etc so if there are any problems please let me know. This is a team competition so please support your team mates with inspires, motivation and encouragement as well as pledge your allegiance in your sig line, log and even avatar! Good natured sledging and competition with the other teams is part of the fun so feel free to stir up a bit of friendly rivalry, Most importantly this is all about fun and you reaching your goals!!!! So…time to get running! Let the challenge begin!! Attachments ---------------- Poison Apples Tracking Sheet.xls (14KB - 44 downloads) |

Expert 1580 Ankeny, Iowa | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Hey everyone - I am Stacie aka dimplespoo. I am new to the challenge part - this is officially my first challenge. I used to run in high school and then had knee surgery on both knees and then just let that stop me getting back into the sport. About 2 years ago I started again and was loving it until hurting the knee again last summer. Now trying to do it again and slowly this time. Starting off building up to a 5k and then aiming for a 1/2 marathon in the spring (April) here in OKC. I am married, no children except my two furry running partners. My husband is active duty military so he isn't home much (4 months (one being vacation last month) home in the past year) and I am 1/2 way through grad school. I work from home for a company in Alaska and we have just moved from Alaska to Oklahoma last fall. I am aiming for 40 miles this month and I might be able to accomplish more but we will see how that goes. Let's kick some booty.

Veteran 288 Owings, MD | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Good morning, fellow Poison Apples! This is my first challenge as well, and I am going to run 35 miles in October. This summer was my first triathlon season and I participated in two 5Ks, a small mini-tri, and two sprint tris. I was a competitive swimmer in high school, and I still swim masters when I can. My running is my worst leg, so I've entered a 10K race on December 9 to get me motivated to get faster and become the runner that I know is inside me somewhere. I am married with two teenagers, and today is my 19th anniversary. My son is a freshman at the University of Maryland and my daughter is a high school sophomore. We live in southern Maryland (30 miles southeast of Washington DC), where I work as a legal secretary in a DC law firm. My husband is a teacher at a Catholic school. Looking forward to meeting everyone (online) and showing them what newbies can accomplish together! Laurie |

Veteran 122 Michigan | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Morning Poison Apples! Of course I'm an Apple-- I spent the day yesterday peeling and coring fresh picked apples for pie fillings-- by bedtime, I saw apples when I closed my eyes! A bit about me--I've completed two sprint tris last year(with the help of BT training plans), but I was sidelined most of this summer. I am easing back into some training with a 10K beginner plan from Hal Higdon's site. I'm working up to a half-marathon in late winter (in a warm state ), then cycling back to tri training in Spring. I'll be doing two days of swimming on my cross-training days on this 10-K plan. I'm a married mom of two school-aged kids, live in a rural-ish part of Michigan, work part time from home, and, in addition to my adult-onset recreational athleticism , I enjoy gardening, reading, being outside, and cooking. Go Poison Apples! |

Master 2339 somewhere over the rainbow | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread happy anniversary laurie!! (19 years officially makes you a rock star!) my name is lyssa, i'm a stay at home mom/homeschooler to my 3 kids. a 7year old, a 3 year old and a 9 month old. i started running in june of this year and did my first tri in september. of the three tri sports, running is probably my strongest, but i haven't been running very regularly since the race, so i just needed something to get me out the door. between my husbands work schedule, and the wonderful western washington rainy season, getting out there is going to be the challenge for me, not the mileage. can't wait to get going!! already i'm behind, i'm not running today because hubby's working, and i don't have anyone to watch the kids. :D |

Veteran 228 Greenbelt, MD | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Hello Poison Apples! I think I took someone to the hospital once who'd eaten a poison apple, so how appropriate. Anyway, hi guys. My real name's Kelley. I am so new I guess this is my 2nd post on BT. I've just started the slow painful but awesome prospect of getting my rather rotund rear off the couch and into a triathlon by next summer. Right now I'm doing the couch potato to 5k training program here on BT and I'm just starting week 3 today. So, I'll be doing mostly walking for my mileage (running starts on the 16th!), but if all goes as I just finished inputting in my planned log for October, I'll be 12 miles over my stated goal (31 miles) for this challenge. Something more about me. I'm a web developer/government contractor for a job and I play EMT/ambulance driver in my free time (aka I'm a volunteer). It's fun (would be more fun if the ambulance went more than 75mph though) and since I'm hopelessly single it gets me out of the house (triathlon training is also going to be good for that). Being an EMT has let me know what I'm getting into as far as upcoming injuries though. I've seen a few nasty bike accidents (luckily nothing unfixable). I've never been much of an athlete. I played varsity tennis for 2 years in high school (missed senior year when I was an exchange student) and played lacrosse goalie for 1 1/2 seasons (I had enough of being a target). My athletic prowess then was something along the lines of not dying in the 600-yard "dash" we had to do for the president's physical fitness test. Since then I've tried on and off to start running but since I hadn't decided to do anything with it I usually gave up. Now with triathlon (and eventually adventure racing since I'm an absolute masochist it would seem) as a goal there's more motivation. I'm looking forward to this and getting to know a few more newbies who are a little further along than I am on this journey. Alas, I will have to beg off thinking about being available to be team leader. While I love spreadsheets, my internet connection at work is so sporadic (your tax dollars hard at work) and slow that it would make it almost impossible. However, I'll be happy to be a cheerleader when I can be. Oh and excuse my love of parentheses Kelley

Veteran 131 Tampa, Florida | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Hi everyone, I'm Jessica. I'm a newbie, but very excited and still dedicated after a month or so. I hate running, I never have been an avid runner. At one point in my life,(3-4 years and 40 pounds ago)I could run 7 miles, but I'm back to square one and doing a lot of walking nowadays. I'm not on a specific plan, but I'm doing interval training and slowly trying to change the ratio to more running than walking and hopefully by December be able to run the whole 5k without stopping. So my short term goal is 50 miles this month, no matter if its run, walk or crawl. I have a route mapped out for outdoor running that's 3.5 miles, so I plan to do that 3 or 4 times a week, making up the difference on the treadmill at the gym. If I use the treadmill at the gym to warm up before strength training or swimming, does that count? Also, I'm in San Antonio, TX. My first 5k is going to be the combat medic run at Fort Sam. If anyone else is going, let me know. I'm glad to meet you all(in cyberspace anyway) and I'm looking forward to getting to know you and kicking butt! |

My husband and I both worked in Greenbelt for about a decade together. He ran the Greenbelt Aquatic & Fitness Center (if you've ever been there) up until about 5 years ago, and I worked at the federal courthouse before I got sick of the lousy pay and got a job in DC. And he's also a volunteer EMT and LOVES to drive the ambulance. He makes me wear my Road ID whenever I go out for a ride and give him detailed instructions about where I'm going (what everyone should be doing!). He even listens to the pager to ensure he doesn't hear about any bike vs. car accidents. I think he's a little paranoid, but it's nice to know someone is watching out for me! Go Terps! Laurie |

Expert 973 Berkeley, Calif. | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Yay, Poison Apples! My name is Erin, and I'm definitely a newbie: my first tri is in November. So I shouldn't have much of a problem reaching my goal of 45 miles -- I pretty much have to if I want to survive the triathlon. I've never been much of a runner but over the past year I've learned to start actually enjoying it. I'm thinking I might want to shoot for a 10k or even a half-marathon sometime in the late winter or spring, and I'd like to work up to an olympic-distance tri in a year. But for now, I'm just focused on November. Any volunteers for a team leader? Ordinarily I'd love to do it, but I'm booked right now with two jobs (plus training!). Oh, and: lyssa-gator - 2007-10-01 9:07 AM i was looking on some other threads, and not to be a dope, but what is the TAN team all about? what is TAN? TAN = Thread About Nothing, over in the Cup of Joe forums. At least, that's one someone said in the intitial thread for this running challenge. |

Veteran 151 West Allis | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Greetings everyone! My name is Jason, and I'm 27 from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I'm a total newb to the sport, but I FINISHED MY FIRST SPRINT TRI YESTERDAY!!!! Judging by my results, I'm definitely quickest in the pool, followed by bike, and my worst part is my run. I got involved here because I hope it will push me to run more than I have, and gain the support of others like me I'm a hotel manager, and I work with the Minor League hockey team here in Milwaukee. My schedule is usually pretty busy, but I definitely don't mind getting out of the house for some training. Hopefully the weather will cooperate with me. This is my first challenge, so it should be interesting to see how it turns out. Good luck everyone!! PS, I'll be taking the next couple days off to recover from my tri, but then I'm gonna kick it into high gear to reach my 50 mile goal! |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Hi, Steve here and I have like, I don't know a whole 20 posts or some such on BT, I just joined 2 weeks ago. I pledged 50 miles .. which is um a little over twice what I did last month. I have never done a Tri, hadn't ever considered doing one and well here I am. I started some biking about 7 weeks ago and then added some running a week later, putting me solidly in the newb catagory. As far as sports go I am a jack of all trades, but master of none; waterskiing, snowskiing (x-country and down hill) windsurfing, surfing, rollerblading, snowmobiling, sailing, racquetball, played some basketball, football, wrestling and track in high school, swam some only recreationaly, fishing (wait thats not a sport its a culinary art), skateboarding (not well), pogo stick, stilts, unicycle, ice skating, roller skating (back in the day), poor at archery, bowling (no thats not a sport either its an excuse to drink beer) hiking now and then. Then I went to college and graduate school and back to graduate school and well did not exercize much until .. did I say I turned 40 this year... well that can't have anything to do with deciding to become a triathalete out of the blue. I also didn't say that I reached an all time high of 180 pounrds 5'9" frame and play computer games a bit much in my spare time... anyone heard of Everquest (level 75 Warrior with 1827 AA Raid buffed to 24,000 hit points AC 3700+ with a 103/33 2hp)? I have been hapily maried for 18 years have children 15, 12, 9, 5 and 2 years old. I did a BA, MA and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with specializations in child fand family counseling, couples counseling, alcohol and drug counseling and then went back for a MA equivalent in School Psychology and am currently taking a specializtion in the education of autistic children. I currently have many hats as a School Psychologist, Program Specialist, Consultant to many programs and Clinical Supervisor of a Post Doctoral Psychology intern. K so my entire running experience was senior year of high school (my girlfriend/ now wife was on the track team). Swimming experience was well to get from the dock to the boat to go skiing and to the raft to throw people in. My biking experience was well that of any kid growing up in the country nothing of note, although I have ridden my unicycle offroad, down steps, etc. So I am way in the newbie part of this process, mostly reading up on everything and trying to figure out how I am going to afford all the toys. Triathletes are like Batman. My current bike is a $65 mountain bike from K-Mart and I live soooo far out in the sticks that the closest McDonalds is 90 miles away, in any direction. There is no indoor pool anywhere and the closest lake is, well closest lake that is not so full of algea that you can't walk out 10 feet before you slowly start sinking in is 70 miles away. I am looking into a swimspa ($) at the moment to be able to add the swimming part to my fledgling training. The closest bike store is 100 to 200 miles away ... so depressing. I have lost 20 pounds since summer and for the first time this week I experienced... an increase in stamina.. was very odd (must not overdue it..be weary of the weekend warrior). So instead of biking the 22 miles I had planned (on my $65 mountain bike offroad) I put in 34 miles... ouche. K well done with writing my book, here, hope to make my goal, run walk or crawl and not let yall down. I am not ready for any marathons or triathlons at this point, just plugging at building some endourance, maybe this spring I will be able to enter a sprint or somehting. Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread I 2nd that Stacie should be our leader. I have yet to figure out how to add a picture, <--- not computer minded. I guess I should add the spring event of breaking honecombed ice into chunks and then jumping from one to the next untill you fall in as a sport as well... a very cold sport as is swimming once a long channel has been cut from the 18 inch thick ice in the winter. Or backwards barefoot waterskiing, hanggliding from behind a boat, waterski jumping with skis 16 inches long...etc. Oh avalanch is a fun sport, you sit at the bottom of a cliff with a sled over your head and your brothers bring down the whole cliff worth of snow on your head and then try to remember where they burried you and dig you out. Or... see how many times you can run around the house in the snow in your bare feet, loser gets locked out. Did I say I have older brotehrs? It is easy for us to talk smack... our goals are sooo low... how could we not meet them !!!!! We have way more room for improvement than any of yall!!! Like those 150 to 200 mile guys, sheesh they get sick for one day and they are 25 miles behind, it would take me 2 weeks to get that far behind. And like doubling my milage from September to October.. like lets see one of those guys double thier milage. K so not very convincing, guess I'll go write a 20 page report or something fun like that. |

Elite 5316 Alturas, California | Subject: RE: Poison Apples Team Thread Oh I can swim if slowly.... I just do not have any water other than the bathtub in which to practice. And for speed I will have to learn that fast stroke called the crawl... how can any stroke called the crawl be fast. I stopped doing that with knee and rotator cup problems, 20 some years ago and have not attempted it since. It will be spring before I can do swimming work I am afraid. Even if I can scroung up the cash for a swimspa it will take them 3 months to make and deliver one. So, a road bike is the next goal for me and well I guess a trainer... cyclopse thingy or some such. But for this all I need are my shoes and this 1 pair of socks I got on that I keep my apples in when not running. |
