Extreme Veteran 364 Luray, Virginia | Subject: Heart pain in a young running In a race I ran yesterday, my brother started having some chest pain near the end of the race. It's like a sharp pain around the heart. It slowed us down a bit. I have had this a couple times before, and so has he. He is 18, and I am 22 and we are both in good shape. Why would we have this? |

X2 Pain is your body's way of letting you know something's not quite right. Hopefully it's just something minor, like maybe heartburn from that second burrito he had before the race . Get to your doc and find out for sure. Mark |

What made it worse? Did taking a deep breath make it worse? It was on the left side of the chest, possibly right side sometimes, don't remember. It lasted no longer than a minute on any of the times it has happened. He breathed deep, but I don't know if that helped. It did go away though, and it's very rare. I'm sure it's no big deal, and we are not going to a doctor. Sorry guys, it's way too easy to say "go to the doctor" for each and every little problem. If I did that every time, then I would be totally broke. |

Sure you guys are young and it's extremely unlikely that it is coming from your heart. But when 22 year olds have heart issues, they are catastrophic. So it's up to you whether or not you go to the doctor, but I don't think I'd call chest pain a "little problem." Of course, I'm biased and have done CPR on too many people under the age of 40. We only say 'go to the doctor' because we care about you! |

If I did that every time, then I would be totally broke. You have two caring physicians here (along with others who were concerned enough to respond) who advised you to see a doctor. If you choose not to take their advice, fine it's your life. In my case, I would have died four years ago from a heart condition had I not been diagnosed and treated appropriately. So it is my somewhat biased opinion that it's generally good to listen to doctors. Mark

Expert 764 | Subject: RE: Heart pain in a young running Dude...use your noggin. Chest pain = doctor visit. Sniffles = suck it up. You don't need to go to the doctor for "every little thing," but I'd say this is a pretty serious little thing. |

Master 2701 Salisbury, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Heart pain in a young running PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE go to the dr. It's probably nothing but YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO TAKE THE CHANCE since it's dealing with the area near your heart. If you're scared, that is perfectly normal too, ( I sure was...TERRIFIED was more like it ) but please don't be in denial. As said previously. you had 2 dr's comment above as well as many others. There is a reason we are all saying this. This web site has some very personable, caring people. ( On the web as well as in person ). Many people really do care, otherwise they wouldn't comment. One last question ? Can you afford to be wrong ? Eternity is a mighty long time. |

Extreme Veteran 364 Luray, Virginia | Subject: RE: Heart pain in a young running Thanks all, I know you are just trying to help and I appreciate that. The reason I don't think it's anything is my dad has had this too, I guess it runs in the family. That said, it's my brother that had the pain and he would DEFINITELY not go see a doctor over this. Machismo; you understand. |

Machismo; you understand. Chest pain/ heart pain that runs in the family does not sound like a simple problem. What does he have to lose by seeing a doctor, maybe his life. It's not like the doctor is gonna call him a puss for coming to see him over what could potentially be a very serious problem. I finally went to the doctor over pain that I've had in my legs for more then two years. I have CECS and if the PT that I'm starting doesn't work then I have to have surgery. It's worth to copay to go to the doctor and see if it's more complicated then just some small pain. |

Veteran 131 Tampa, Florida | Subject: RE: Heart pain in a young running Please, please visit this site. http://www.postgradmed.com/issues/2000/10_00/drezner.htm It's easy to read and gives many explanations for chest pain in people like yourself and your brother. I am NOT a doctor. I do work in cardiology, and have worked on several young, seemingly healthy people who may have died had they not sought treatment, or who were treated without their consent because they lost consciousness. Chest pain is not something to ignore. Ever. I have participated in the treatment of a 20-something marathon runner who collapsed during a race, a 19 year old soldier who had chest pain during PT, and several others who I just could not believe actually ended up on my table. You can tell me to take a flying leap if you want, but if this convinces you to see a doctor and saves you or your brother from something devastating, so be it. Diagnosis can be so simple and often it won't cost as much as you think. Also, many drug and device companies will help you foot the bill if you can't pay, you just have to ask. Those companies are making million of dollars and they just write this stuff off anyway. Don't be afraid or ashamed to ask a doc for this kind of help. Actually, you're probably better off asking the office manager or nursing staff. We're often more sympathetic(we don't make as much as the MD's), and have more time to sit and help you. Jess |

I'm unfamiliar with the statistical correlation between income and sympathy, but I can tell you that us docs appreciate office staff who take the time to work through these options with patients...it allows us to see the next patient who's waiting. |

I'm unfamiliar with the statistical correlation between income and sympathy, but I can tell you that us docs appreciate office staff who take the time to work through these options with patients...it allows us to see the next patient who's waiting. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to imply that there is a correlation. I didn't articulate that very well... I think what I was trying to say was more along the lines of empathetic, with regard to the financial woes? What I meant is that some docs that I work with or have worked with are unfamiliar with just how difficult it can be balance financial demands with medical necessities. I don't know you personally but I'm willing to bet you know at least one peer who has never had to worry about finances, or health insurance. It can be very intimidating for patients to ask their doctors for help. Many people still look up to doctors with superhuman awe and many doctors deserve it. Doctors are pulled constantly in many different directions and are forced to prioritize and don't always get to spend the amount of time with people that they wish they could. One of the best parts of my job is being able to help people do things that will never be written into my job description. It's really great to hear that you appreciate your staff. Being told thank you sometimes when you don't expect it, just for doing the "right thing", is a great reward. I hope I didn't dig the hole any deeper, or make myself sound like more of an idiot. Thanks for calling me out. Jess |

Extreme Veteran 412 | Subject: RE: Heart pain in a young running You should go to the Dr too! My 2cents worth..... I have was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse a few years ago and told it was not a big deal. My Dr is very aware of my love for endurance sports. He's a family. I had had strange chest pain/palpatations and he sent me for a stress test/echo/ holter wearing day? ( not sure the real term for that one) I was fine. That was a few years ago. After the Chicago Marathon this year, I had trouble breathing. I couild not take a deep breath for about an hour...until I went to a/c hotel. I felt almost panicky during that time. Later, I found out about the man who died on teh course and his diagnosis of mvp. I could not go on wihtout a chat with my Doc. He is redoign all those tests to make sure all is ok. Peace of mind......It's a lot of money for sure.....but it's your life. Like they said before....pick your doc call based on body part. My elbow is Killing me after I fell on a trail run 2 weeks ago. It's red and had a weird dent. But, I'm not calling anyone. Heart palpitations when I do endurance sports........definately. Just my thoughts. I had to jump into this one. I wish you and your brother good health!!! |

Expert 1233 | Subject: RE: Heart pain in a young running Read the response from the Sports Medicine Doctor in this month's medical 'Member Case Study: Athlete Heart Attacks'. I posed this question since four of the races I ran last year were "Memorial Races", for an athlete who died suddenly from a heart attack. While personally I don't think the medical community knows the answer to sudden cardiac death in athletes, the point made in the article was that an underlying unknown condition was the most likely cause. |
