Hi Team 5! Time to get our team thread started. It looks like our line up so far is:

naners
antti asu
Pulch
charge4brendan
dcon
rkreuser
rzzqb8
riorio
bhoover10001

I volunteered to be captain, but am willing to step aside if someone else wants the job. I think we should all introduce ourselves and share our goals for the month. I love these challenges not only because they keep me motivated, but because I get a chance to meet some BTers and see what training other people are doing. Hopefully, by the end of the month we’ll have surpassed our individual goals, inspired the heck out of each other, and managed to heckle the other teams.

My name is Nalani. I live in Hawaii (on Oahu). I did my first triathlon a little more than a year ago, and have been pretty much hooked ever since. I’m training for my first marathon and a 4.8 mile swim. Both are in December, so my goals for this challenge are 130 miles of running and 45,000 yards of swimming. I also decided to throw in some core workouts because I really need them . Okay, I’m going to admit that also have a secret goal of being no more than four minutes behind my boyfriend at the first triathlon next season (he’s getting a little too comfortable with beating me), so I’m trying to make sure that I stay in decent shape during the off season.

I think that we are in desperate need of a new name. Does anyone have an idea for a new team name? Maybe we’ll get a better idea when we see what we have in common.

Hi "Team 5",

I you're happy with your group!

At first, I grouped the international folks together.... And I saw that they are all doing really impressive workouts. Since there weren't enough international people to form a complete team, I looked through the goals, and tried to find all the "heavy hitters." Every one of you has REALLY impressive goals! When I wrote the spreadsheet, I labeled your team "hard-core."

I'll have a team spreadsheet available for you - hopefully sometime tonight.

That way, you'll be able to see what everyone's goals are, and you can chart your progress during the month.

Your team roster is listed here:
http://bt-challenge.tripod.com/Teams.htm

If you don't remember your goals, you can see them here. (The last 10 or so people who entered aren't on there yet, but I'll update it tonight.)

International Hard Cores?  (Okay, that may be a stretch, but I'm trying).  Either way it's pretty cool to be the captain of a team labeled "hard-core."

Hey, Nalani. I thought "you were Spartacus".

I'm Rick, 40 years young, living in Michigan. By day I drive a desk, and by night I'm a moderator for the tri-talk, iron-distance, and COJ forums.  So in other words, I've probably read every post on BT for the last 3 years, and I have lots of input into the 'naughty or nice' lists that don't exist.  Just kidding, of course....

As far as tris, I've been doing tris since 2001...I got into them first because I had back surgery in 2001, and figured doing a tri would be a good test to see whether it was structurally sound...if I could do a tri, then dammit, the back was good.  It was, and that led to maybe 20 tris, 10 marathons, etc over the last 5 years.

This year, my season was basically finished in September, so I've been working the buffet lines and happy hours for the last 6 weeks or so (even though I threw in another marathon).  So...as we speak, my weight is up 10, I haven't worked out but a handful of times in the last 2 months, and I'm ready to lay down a base....next year's going to be a doozy.

So the goals for the month are to be active and lay a base....40 tri-sport workouts this month. Can't wait to meet everyone and get after it.   Let's tear it up!!!

And Nalani, if you want, I can help co-captain....and for the entire team, let me know if I can help with anything...more than glad to pitch in to motivate, inspire, advice, whatever.

That's good...I've been thinking, and I'm not at all sure I like anything I came up with. Doesn't say much for my quality of thought, but here goes...

We Are the World
Five for Fighting
You're Not Hardcore
More is More
Five in Five (team 5 in five countries)
Give me Five
Slaughterhouse 5
We're a Handful

Heh. I'm kind of cracking myself up now. Then again, if someone waves a laser pointer on the wall, the only folks wildly swinging their heads back and forth are cats, penguins, and me. I'm amused easily, it appears.

Howdy. My name is Brian. I'm in California, which may, or may not be a non-US country. Before that I was in Texas (not part of the US), France (not part of the US), and Louisiana (Not even on the same code of laws as the US).

My goals are pretty simple, and I didn't realize they put me in the hardcore group....
Biking - 10 Hours
Running - 15 Hours
Swimming - 12 Hours
Sub 2:00 Half Marathon on November 11th

My super secret long term goal (now announced to the world) is to beat my 16 yo daughter in a triathlon. I got lucky and beat her in the half marathon - (4 months training vs. 1 week training and a badly timed bathroom break = dad winning by 30 seconds!!!). Before I complete my super secret long term goal, of course, I need to complete my public goal of actually completing a triathlon.

I like all the suggestions for team names that I've seen. There's always just the generic International All Stars

Hi, I am Robin. I also drive a desk by day and round up kids by night. I'm not sure how I feel about being on the Hard-core team, but I guess I am somewhat relieved because I was looking at my running goals compared to some of the other participators in the Challenge and was beginning to think I was nuts. I did my first triathlon several years ago after several years of talking about doing it. I had a great time and swore I was going to keep on doing it, but a move and a couple babies got in the way and I never did it again. After the second baby, I decided that if I couldn't use time(or lack of) as an excuse for being lazy anymore and 6 weeks postpartum, I starting running again. I did a half-marathon 6 months later and the summer I had my first real triathlon "season" completing 2 sprints and 1 Olympic. Running is by far my weakness which really sucks b/c I do well in the swim and bike and then watch everyone run by me at the end. Anyhow because I can't run, my winter focus is running. I am training for the same half I did last year. My goals are 100 miles of running, 5 hours of riding, and some equivalent or swimming that works out to about 6-7 masters group swims. Oh, and to lose 5 lbs which will be the most difficult of all.

Hi team whatever our name is.

No, no. I'm Sparticus.

My name is David and I'm from Scotland.

I did my first triathlon as a result of too much to drink at a party way way back in 1998. I thought at the time I was quite fit but finished last man in the field (I blame the MTB). I took triathlon a bit more seriously about three years ago and actually started training. I have now moved up to a safe middle of the pack. I did my first HIM this year and my ultimate aim is to do an IM before I'm 50 (got about 5 years to get there). Similar to Nalani I also have a secret goal to beat my wife in a running race. I have been close a couple of times.
Another secret aim is to do next years HIM as part of a team with my two daughters, they are slightly tempted.

I should probably be concentrating mostly on improving my running and biking but the weather can be a bit ropey in November so I didn't push for too high a distance on the bike. Instead I added the core drills, I haven't done any of these since another challenge a few months back.

Also for sheer randomness I threw in a goal of beating one of my pb's. I hope to do this on Saturday when we have a swimming time trial. If it doesn't happen then I could be struggling with this part of the challenge.

Hey. Its nice to meet everyone.

I'm Sally and reside in "wonderful" Phoenix AZ. I'm a mom of 2 and a preschool teacher. I'm originally from Scotland but have lived over in the states for 12 years. So it's fitting that I'm on an International team. I did my first sprint tri a year ago and got completetly hooked. I've done about 10 tris and just finished my longest tri to date- The Soma quarter Ironman in AZ last weekend.

I'm not sure how hard-core I am but I've come through over 100% on the other 2 challenges I've done. We have great winter weather here, so my goals for the winter are to train for a half-marathon while still biking and swimming twice per week.

My goals for November:

Swim 12,000 yds

Bike 150 miles

Run 80 miles

Lose 3 pounds (so I can gain it back in December)

The next couple of days will be hectic with Halloween and work but I'll stop by and inspire everyone by the weekend!

What’s this I hear about people being unsure of being in the “hard-core” group?  From the looks of it, everyone exactly where they should be!  None of that.

Brian: Nice super secret goal.  How fun is it to have your daughter involved in triathlons as well?!

Robin: I know how you feel about the running part of races.  It makes me laugh (and sometime slightly annoyed) when people tell me (as they pass me), “Come on, don’t give up” and I respond with a “this is as fast as I run”!

David: Hmmm, this could be problematic because I’m pretty sure that I am Spartacus.  I really like your goal of beating a PB.

Van Paulus: welcome to our (soon to be named) team.

Sally: congrats on Soma!

Anyone have any preferences on the team name?  My favorites are: “We are the World”, “Five for Fighting”, and “Slaughterhouse 5.”

Hello everyone!

Well, I'm Dave and I live in Tokyo. My story begins way back when. I'm the son of a sharecropper.... Wait...that's not my story at all...

I grew up as a swimmer (sprints certainly not distance). It was after college that I got interested in triathlons. Swimming was easy. Everyone knows how to ride a bike. It was the running I dreaded and as such I only ran to complete the tris (seldom if ever trained for running).

I tend to get into things and tris became no different so naturally I became enamored by Ironman. What they accomplished was astonishing to me.

Life intervened and I stepped away for many years. When I turned 30 I went through a bit of a personal life crisis and decided I needed to do something. Training for a marathon became that something. If they could do one of those after 2.4 in the water and 112 on a bike certainly I could do that solo. Right? After doing quite a few I decided to get back into this triathlon thing and here I am. Finished my first 1/2 IM this summer and am looking for a full in 08.

I do it for me and for the memory of my son (Brendan who died of CHARGE Syndrome...thus the name).

Looking forward to the challenge!

Kind of like Five for Fighting because "History starts now"....

OK, I think I'm on this team too, so y'all get to put up with my eccentricities for 30 days.  Hey, be thankful it's a short month so you don't have to worry about the 31st.  LOL

I'm Max, which is really just a nick name that I've had for more years than I care to count.  If I tell you my real name, I'll have to kill you because nobody uses it except my bill collectors and the federal government.  I work as a quality control technician for a welding and machining company in Massachusetts.  I have a wife, two sons, and 2 grandchildren, and this Friday is our 34th anniversary, so I'm no spring chicken.  I'm gettin' pretty darn close to 60 years old (7 more months), but I feel like 35, and sometimes act like 15, so it's all good.  I've been doing triathlons for over 4 years now, am a 3-time Ironman (Lake Placid in '05, '06 and '07) but that doesn't mean squat since all I have to do is sit too long on my laurels and I become a couch potato faster than you can snap your fingers.  I'm using this challenge as just one more way to keep the ball rolling and trying to turn back the clock.  I've met more cool people on BT than you can possibly imagine, so I picked a team whose members I'm not really familiar with, except for Rick and Sally who was with me on last month's challenge.  This way I get to see some new faces and blogs...that's cool!

My goals for the month are in 3 parts:

1.  Ride my trainer for 30 hours.  An hour per day sounds easy...until you fall behind, then it's hell trying to catch back up.  So this should keep me on top of it.

2.  Do 1,000 situps (or crunches).  I'll start easy, and hope to pile them on as the days go by.  I need to firm up the last bit of Michelin Radial Tire around the middle.

3.  Kiss my wife and least once per day.  This should be easy-cheezy!

OK...let's pick a cool team name and we're on our way tomorrow!  30 days will go by faster than you imagine!

Hey All!

I'm the newest member of our Team 5. My name is Buck Rogers (really, it is).

I live on a military post in South Korea with my wife and 4 kids (2 sons, 2 daugthers, oldest one is 6 years old).

I play at being an army surgeon but really want to be a bike racer when I grow up!

I used to race road bikes back in high school and college and then stopped for the last 12 years. Got into Tri's this summer after doing my first marathon in April. Did my first Tri in July which was a blast.

But, as I continued to train I found myself doing more and more riding and less and less of running and swimming. Then I broke my wrist in a riding accident and I've been banned from swimming by ortho but, ironicvally, I can still ride okay.

Now I've come to the conclusion that I love being a roadie (again) and probably will not do any tri's in the near future but will continue to ride as much as possible.

I'm down for 400 miles on the bike this month. Mostly will be on the trainer as it is getting too cold to ride outside, even with booties and knee warmers! Most rides will have to be at the 4 to 5 am timeframe as the kiddos dominate the house as soon as they get up!

Let's kick some butt on this challenge!!!

Hi everyone. I'm Dan. I live in Sendai, Japan and am 49 years old. After 29 years of being a workaholic, I became gainfully unemployed on Oct 1. That is not a bad thing - the timing was right and it is allowing me to spend as much time as I want getting back into shape. The key will be not to overdue it and get injured.

Relative to triathlons, I am a newbie and really only have experience running. Although I know the basics of swimming, I never learned to put my face in the water and my stroke was terribly inefficient. So my swimming right now is focused on learning an improved technique (using Total Immersion DVD). Biking....well it is not difficult as someone already mentioned, but I have spent about zero time on a bike in the last 30 years so lots of practice is in order. Running: I have done some 10ks, half-marathons and finally the Honolulu Marathon in 2001. However, my knees have been giving me problems for the past couple of years. The last doc I saw recommended strengthening my quads and that is something I am working on. I am going to hold off on starting to run for at least another month or two, but I am banking lots of walking miles.

My goals for November are:

9 km swimming
160 km walking (knees not ready to run yet)
160 km biking
8 Weights sessions
Body weight down to 63 kg (now at 65.5)

Avatar coming soon....need to figure out something appropriate....

Welcome to everyone!  I love this multi-national team we have.  Hope everyone is off to a good start and is excited about the next 30 days.  I know I am...for one thing my weight this morning is 179.6 lbs so I FINALLY broke through the 180 barrier, and I'm down 15 lbs since Lake Placid!  In the spirit of that, I also revised my goals just a bit, as I added in 50 miles of walking with my wife, since she's been doing that routine as a part of her own weight loss plan.  And I changed my "trainer riding" to just plain 30 hours of "bike riding" because I wanted to include any road cycling or mountain bike riding along with it.  I'm good to go with the plan below!

1.  Ride my trainer/roadbike/mountainbike for 30 hours.

3.  50 miles walking with Patti.

4.  Kiss my wife at least once per day.  This should be easy-cheezy!

5 For Fighting!

Hi. My name is David Gillen and I'm a late edition to this wonderful team.  I live near Dallas, TX.  I grew up in Austin, but have lived in DC, CA, and PA.   I'm just finished my 3rd full season of triathlon.  I have one full iron-distance race under my belt (Redman 06) and I did a couple of fun "destination races" this year (Alcatraz and Timberman).  Next year, I'm planning on running my 4th stand-alone marathon in Austin on Feb 17th, and then a short 6 weeks later I'm doing the Ironman California 70.3 race.

Since I'm training for the marathon, one of my goals is to run about 17 hrs in Nov.  I'd also like biking this fall as it's fairly mild hear in TX: 16 hrs biking.  I suck at swimming and typically I don't swim at all in the winter, but I want to get something in, thus the paltry 3 hrs swimming.   I also want to twice a week for about 45 mins/session = about 6 hrs for the month.

I've been on BT for years, but have never really logged my training here.  Well that is one of the main reasons I joined this challenge: to force me to start logging.

Anyway, I look forward to this challege and getting to know Team 5 better.

Thanks.

Hey, welcome, Dave and Dan. It's gonna be a fantastic month...

And workout #1 for the month is done - few miles at 8:30 pace at lunchtime. And as an added bonus, I got 60 suckage points (I'm entered in the winter suckage challenge, too, where you get points for s/b/r outside in crappy weather) for a run in 42 degree temps with a 15mph wind.

That sounds like an average New England day!

Keep up that hot pace Rick...8:30 is outa my league!  Got my daily quota in too.
