Just wondering what your opinions are on bike purchasing right now. With our dollar so strong and American Prices being lower what do you think? I really want to be able to support my local shop but by going to visit family in Seattle I can save some $$$$. I mean if it was 50-10 bucks but big deal. This can be hundreds of dollars which is money that can go towards more gear for the bike.

Just looking for general feelings that people have.

Hey Shawn, if you have family down there, have them go into a bike shop and e-mail you some prices. Compare them to what you can get up here. If it's going to save you some cash buy it where you can save and then use your spare cash for some pedals and shoes. Best of luck looking.

You could also try your local bikeshop and have them check the warehouses (Specialized, etc) to see if they have any last year's or older models in your size. You can save some big bucks that way.

If you're looking for a road bike the best deals are the "cops for cancer" bikes. The season is over and they sell them off for around $400 to $600 range, and you get a tax receipt to boot.

Where do you inquire about the cops for cancer bikes? That sounds like quite a good deal.

I know last year Simon's Bike Shop in downtown Vancouver supplied the bikes, they would be able to point you in the right direction I'm sure. Or, did you check the website?

Sorry, for not getting back too you sooner browner.

The cops for cancer bikes are bought through Simon's Bikeshop for the rides. He is very supportive of the police on and off the ride.

The bikes after the ride are sold off by individual rides in their detachment/department areas through word of mouth. However, I believe that if you call the Canadian Cancer Society (Cops for Cancer HQ) on Boundary Rd in Vancouver, that they will try and hook you up with someone who has a bike in your size.

There phone numbers are,

(604) 253-8470

Toll Free: 1 888-229-8288

I believe this the model used on this year's ride http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCBkModel.jsp?spid=21900

If you have any problems pm me.

Cheers,

So I managed to pick up one of these bikes. I get it next week. They are $1000 and there are about 5 left various sizes. there is no tax receipt as it is not a donation because the money goes back into their Bike replacement fund for next years bikes. The Bikes are maintained every night by the tour mechanic that travels with them. Andrea( the one I talked to) wasn't sure about warranty but is looking into it for me.

This is the bike that they rode

In the past cancer agency ate the cost of the bikes, and the sale of the bike went towards the riders attempts at raising a $10, 000 donation - tax receipt included.

Sorry passing along bad info.

Just curious Shawn, did you get yours on the Island, or from here in Vancouver? Because the bike is different, at least in colour to the one my partners wife rode.

Not bad info at all thanks for the lead. Mine is in Vancouver. The Victoria ones are special 10 year anniversary editions and the riders well most of them kept them.

Sorry now I can finish this post had a baby crawling towards the top of the stair's and had to bolt. Sam thank you for pointing me to the Cops for Cancer Bikes. Andrea at the Cancer Society was great at getting back to me and helping me. The bikes were bought through Simon's as someone said and actually mine the one I bought is going in for brake work before I get it. The $1000 was higher then you said but is still a great deal and even if there is no tax receipt the money goes back to a fund to keep the fund raising going so it is still going to a great cause. So thank you hopefully it will be ready for pick up next week and I will make my way over to Van and get it now I have to get some pedals.

Received an email from Specialized rep lastnight and the Purchaser of these bikes will be considered the original owner so the bikes will have the full warranty as if you were buying from the LBS. So it looks like my sale will proceed now I just want them to get back to me to tell me I can come over and pick up my bike!!
