Subject: Jonathan22's group - CLOSED like your parents door during happy time.

NAME: Jonathan22
STORY: Jonathan22's athletic career started as a 1st string wide reciever on his championship NCAA college football team.  Ok, maybe not 1st string, but he was on the team.  And maybe not "on the team" but wanting to be on the team.  And the team didn't win any championships. Actually, Jonathan22's college didn't even have a football team.
Jonathan22 did run cross country in college but took 14 years off "to find himself".  In 2007, being 20 lbs overweight from two kids (okay, his wife of 10 years gave birth to them, but he was always supportive), Jonathan22 decided to get back into shape by cycling and running. After finishing 4th in his age group in his first triathlon, Jonathan22 got his professional card and has never looked back (too bad it was a library card).  In 2008, Jonathan22 will compete in a variety of distances including the 2008 Ironman Florida where his goal is to "not suck".  Professionally, Jonathan22 is a senior manager at a Big 4 accounting firm.
FAMILY STATUS: Married, 2 Kids
CURRENT TRAINING: I have a coach.  I try to do what he says.  I tend to overtrain (if that is even a training style).  My coach says he will do me bodily harm if I don't start doing what he says and no more.
THIS YEAR'S RACES: Here are my 2007 races and results:
3/3 - CRR 10K 56:51

2008 RACES:  Here are my 2008 races (some are just ideas):
1/1 - ATC 10K

R
2/9 - Chattahooche 10K
2/16 - Tundra TT

5/26 - Celebrate America 10K
7/4 - Peachtree 10K
7/? - Chattanooga Oly
9/? - PTC Sprint
9/? - SC HIM
11/1 - IMFL R

WEIGHTLOSS: I'd like to enter next Tri season at 160.  I'm currently at 171 and seem to be expanding.
WHAT WILL MAKE ME A GOOD MENTOR: Seriously, I started multisport a year ago thinking it would be cool to just finish a sprint.  I'm totally hooked now.  I love the positive influence that the multisport lifestyle provides.  I have learned a ton from BT and my local tri community in this last year; I just want to give back. When I joined BT, I was part of Donto's mentor group and very much appreciated the motivation and encouragement that his group provided.

Jonathan;

I would love to join your group.

My name is Steve and I live in Suwanee (about 10 miles from you...which means about 1 hr. in our traffic

I am a retured DeKalb Firefighter and am now a stay at home "Mom" as my wife and I are raising our 8yo granddaughter. I do have time to train but sometimes that is a bad thing because I tend to occasionally put it off

I have a history with running but that stopped about 12-13 years ago with some back problems. That has been taken care of now and I am ready to roll.

I am involved with a group that my Chiropractor set up in September (that is now over 100 people Most are not athletes but the main focus is to just get them off of the couch...I however want to RACE. We are doing the Callaway Mini-Sprint in June but I have already committed to some running events and other sprint tri's so this is something I am thinking sbout for the long haul.
Here is a link to an AJC award she just won for the project;

http://www.ajc.com/search/content/health/stories/2007/11/26/goldcar...

Hope you won't mind taking on an old worn out fireman but if you feel up to the challenge I would love to join your group.

Can I please join???

I'm pretty new to triathlons. My 1st sprint was last May ( tri for the Cure), but I have been an avid runner for a year and a half. I have done 2 marathons, and am in training for my 3rd in January. I am also signed up for a 1/2 IM in March ( ca) and gulp.. a Full IM in AZ next November. I hope to become the youngest female ever to become an Ironman in AZ. I m addicted to tris and hope to keep getting better, and keep getting my times down.

My goals for the rest of December:
Run 45-50 mpw
cycle 1-2x
swim 2-3x

After the marathon, I'll be upping the cycling a LOT, but my main focus is running right now.

Welcome Steve.

I think it's awesome that you get the stay at home with your grand-daughter.

Aside from the Callaway Sprint, what other races are you planning on doing?

What training plan are you currently following, if any?

Hello Rachel (gymgirlx),

Welcome to the group.  You have some big goals coming up, way to go! It says a lot that you are taking on a full IM in your second year at 18 yo.

I'll be doing IMFL which is around the same time as Fall IMAZ.

A few questions:

  • What training plan are you following?
  • In your tris this past year, how did you do?  And how did you do in each sport relative to the field?

A few last things:

I'll add both of you to my friends list so we can check out each other's blogs.  I find that to be helpful.

I'll post my weekly workouts in this thread and encourage you to do the same. I have been a part of 2 other mentor groups and this DEFINITLY helps.

I'm going to limit the size of the group to 5 people (3 more to go).  I find that a smaller group is easier for everyone.

Thanks Jonathan

I am not following anything specific as yet and will be on a plan from the BT site starting in Jan. I am just trying to build a base right now and give myself something to work with.

I have not been in the pool yet and I just bought a TI DVD and should have it early next week to study (have read the book but I am a visual learner)

Ran 3.5 yesterday at Cochran Shoals and am riding today (I saw you are riding at 1:30 @ SCT...I am supposed to meet some folks at Floyd Rd @ 2:00...I will try to come early and introduce myself)

Monday in the Gym
Tue-run 35 min
Wed Ride SCT usually about 14-15 miles.
Thur-off
Fri-Gym
Sat-Run- Should go between 3.5-4 this week
Sun-Ride- Low intensity since I help the very new BOP's in our group...Not much of a workout for me but I am still used to being in the saddle.

I go to Body Plex in Suwanee and my gym sessions are not intense and more maintaince than anything else...I may not even go since I am in the December push-up/sit-up challenge.

Thanks for taking me on and I hope to meet you at the SCT today.

I'm following the Pfitz 11/55 plan for the marathon, and added a little cycling and swimming to that. I want to do well in the marahon, but just wanted to finish and have fun in the 1/2. After the marathon, I hope to replace Saturdays with long rides .

In the past year, I have done OK in in. I did an Olympic tri in September, and got 2nd in my age group ( only 2 in it!)Swimming was a disaster, I kept getting kicked and couldn't concentrate on my swim. Bike was good, saw a crash that scared me a bit. I think running is my Forte, not because I'm fast, but because I love it! I couldn't believe I passed a lot of people on the run.

For IM AZ, I hope to talk to my swim coach ( who is also a tri coach w/ her husband). I should be thinking about that the next few months.

I'm so excited I got accepted!

Running:
Run the Reagan 10k - Feb
Peachtree - July
Some early fall 15k or Half Mary
I HOPE to be ready for the 26.2 with Donna in Jacksonville in Feb. 09 (with a... finish in one piece goal)

Hope this helps

Rachel,

I think cycling 2x per week is a good idea.  1) It still builds your aerobic engine.  2) As long as your cadence is over 90, it'll help with leg turnover which should make you a faster runner. 3) It builds leg strength which also helps.

Nice to meet you and the others in your group yesterday. Hope you guys had a great ride.

We went 20 miles...FOR THE FIRST TIME

I am going to pay for it today.

I will stick to the week I posted above as best I can. It is a very busy week for me as well but I still have to make time for training. Your week sounds like fun

Who are you working with as a coach?

Regarding long rides, I'm assuming you are wearing bike shorts (not sure if the shorts you had one had a chamois or not).  On rides longer than 1 hour, they help.  I also use Bag Balm (green tin, in hand products isle of drug store).  Smear it all over the chamois.

Yesterday was a pretty long ride for Ninja (my wife) and it was the first time using bag balm.  She said it made a huge difference.

Regarding coaching, I use Brett Daniels of the Sport Factory

http://thesportfactory.com/site/age/Brett_Daniels_Team_Coach.shtml

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/view-profile.asp?uid=15899

He is highly recommended.  There are two other coachs (both from Sport Factory) that were recommended to me: John Adamson and Lisa Marshall.  I have meet both and both are awesome.

I would love to join this group of finely tuned athletes. Hopefully you can teach me a few thing, which shouldn't be that hard to do since I am just starting my 2nd year.

A little about me. I am32, a husband, and father of....wait for it....five. I am in the Air Force and just finished my first year of Sprints, I did 3. I have started building a pretty solid run base for 2008, as I plan to do my first HIM in August as well as several sprints, an Oly, and possibly my first marathon. I'm looking for some serious motivation to keep me on track. Hope you still have room.

Look forward to being a part of your team.

Hi, guys!

Every group needs a slacker--can I be yours??

This is my second season; I did 3 sprints and a Oly last year, and am going for sprints/Olys and a 1/2IM at the end of this year's season, as well as a 1/2Mary in May.

I was NOT a runner; I guess now I have to say I am, but my favorite part is usually stopping. I love to swim, but am working on the "fast" part (courtesy of TI). In the off season I'm trying to get in as much mountain biking as road time.

I'm a doc in the hospital, have a hubby, 4 kids (a mixed herd from marriage), 2 dogs and 2 horses...My biggest obstacle to training is finding time! Despite that, I guess I have a tendency to overtrain (took a lot of cajoling to get me to take an "off season", but my body's thanking me).

Sarcasm is a main communication style of mine, and my best weapon against life is a sense of humor.

Am I in???

Hey guys,

Hopefully there is room in this group for one more!! I'm a single 27 year old female- 2 cats and one dog.

I have never actually done a tri before but I just registered for the Kansas HIM. I have been wanting to do tris for a long time but had many life obstacles such as finishing my Ph.D and not being able to quit smoking. Well now that I'm almost done with school I have no excuse and I finally quit smoking (in febuary).

I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing though and would love your mentorship. I've been working out for quit a while now and feel like I'm in 'decent' shape. I have a personal trainer but we are only doing weights- lots of them. You will see him affectionately termed on my log as "Mr. Kill", or "overkill."

Currently I'm planning on working to build my running base more, I need to get a HR monitor. I'm also signing up for a coached spin class in a few weeks. Once I have those things down I was thinking of joining a masters swim club too- I just have to find one. So those are my plans and goals

Ok folks.  I closed the group.  I think a smaller group will be better.  My first group that I was a part of was 5 people and it worked out well.  The second group was a larger group and it had a different dynamic.

I'm going to try and post a question or two related to a theme per week.  Definitly feel free to ask any questions you have.  If I can't answer them, I have a coach (who is also on BT) and I will arm wrestle him into answering them.

It's time to get your SBR on; it's going to be a fun season.
