Does Tribc.org list all races or just ones that are sanctioned by them? This is my first year doing tri's and am looking at what ones to do in the sprint mostly as the swimming just isn't there and maybe an Oly at the end of the season.

They don't do ALL the races but do have the vast majority of them.  The races they cover are all checked out and meet their requirements for safety, organization etc...you may not want to do an unsanctioned race.  Some are iffy, such as the "Harrison Mills "My First Triathlon Series" TriBC's calender is posted for 2008 but it is not completed yet.  When you do a race you will get propaganda for other races in your area.

Good luck in the upcoming season, I am on my second year and can't wait to see what I learn this year!  Let us know when you come out to the Mainland for races for after race beers!

Shawn a GREAT "first triathlon" is Triathlon of Compassion, set to run July 13 in Victoria. It's a sprint distance, pool swim, great bike course although the run is a bit hilly. However they have a "first tri" category and really support everyone their first time out. I highly recommend it, it was my first tri and an experience I'll never forget.
I'll see you there!

I'd watch Cadboro Bay (sprint distance), if they run it in August, as the ocean swim is killer tough. And Sri Chinmoy on August long is a good Oly distance and a great race but a very difficult hilly bike course. I know LifeSport (www.lifesport.ca) runs the Subaru series and have several sprints - they are very well put-together races.

Hope this helps! I'm based in Victoria too, so any questions feel free to ask.

I know about tri of compassion I work on the base. There is the Sooke Spring sprint. Vic International HIM and Sprint Shawnigan lake May long weekend. I am not sure I can't enter as a first time tri I did one 6 years ago now.

Is there a category for overweight slow and lazy?. Ok not lazy I do get out and try to get better

Hey it's Christmas - it's ok to be a bit lazy! But come new year I'd better start seeing your butt out there. ;-)
You should still think about Tri of Compassion.. even if you don't register in the first tri category, it is just such a good fun relaxed laid-back race. Good one to do if you haven't done one in a while, everyone's really supportive.

If you're on the island and don't mind the drive, the Qualicum Beach Triathlon is super fun and totally supportive. It's a really family oriented event (with a Tiny Tri for 3-5 year olds - adorable!!) but has attracted some good racers. In face, Kristen Sweetland (world junior champion) holds one of the course records. If you google "qualicum beach tri" its the first result that comes up. The website is pretty useless (and is rarely updated) but they do paper applications starting in about April. I highly recommend it! Pool swim (400m), decently flat bike route (well marked and tidy, 18km) and a 5k trail run (mostly shaded). Good luck!!

I concur the Qualicum Tri is a good one ... one of my triathlon clubs is training for it, actually, is the goal of the newbies in the club. And it's a pool swim if I remember correctly, so not nearly so scary. ;-)

You betcha I feel way more comfortable in a pool. That, plus the fact that its less than 45 minutes from where I live were big factors in doing it. Awesome, fun, supportive race! Now if only the website were better...
