TAlanP2 - 2010-03-13 9:02 AM Gate River Run 15 K tomorrow, due to the crud I've been carrying around for the last 2 weeks I'm not sure that I'm going to meet my goal, but I'm defiantly going to have fun. 9.3 miles of live bands, food, great people, maybe a cold beer around the 8 mile mark before the long bridge, and a few at the end! Have a great weekend everyone!Laughing

How did the run go??

I completed my first (Sprint) duathlon yesterday, which I faired pretty well and happy to see that my speed is getting faster .  All the hard work is starting to pay off.  Now I need to focus on May, which consists of a sprint tri and Oly tri.

My boss is putting a lot of pressure for me to do the Ironman 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship with him & a few others.  I hear that the course is brutal, not to mention dealing with the heat/humidity.  yikes!!! We'll see what happens... if not this, then I'll make my first HIM next year at Singapore 70.3.

If you're interested, here's my race report: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=199584&posts=1#M2726123

how's training going for everyone?

awrite Tuffli!    My only suggestion is to take it easy on the HIM.  I would rather finish a race that I feel I am prepared for, than rush into things.  Asia-Pacific Championship (focus on the 3rd word)...  Seems like a very competitive race, not knowing where you stand fitness wise )on a general sense), as well as sleep deprived, I would seriously consider such a thing... not to say that it hasn't been done and I am a rather conservative self.

WTG Alan,  tell us about the race, and perhaps some foaming seeping out the mouth by mile 8.2 (LOL).  That's crazy.

For me, this month has flown by and I have been sick and in recovery and trying to finish the fiscal yr on a strong note, this last weekend participateed at a swim camp for triathletes.  Just 2 of us, but that meant a lot of hands on.  Got a few pointers, including that I need to start swimming or doing pushups or something cuz I am losing my arm strentgh...

Right now it's been very windy here in W Florida and I am beginning to second guess my goal time for St Anthony's (in 5 weeks).

Thanks, Olman.

I actually DON'T want to do the Asia-Pacific Championship, but it's a bit hard to shy away from the office MD that won't take no for an answer.. Cry  Personally, I think he just wants to keep me as one of his training partners. LOL.

I think the SG 70.3 would fit my time frame better and the fact that it should be less competitive.  surely, my goal is to just finish the race.

BTW, are you getting any shades from MACCA?  I'm participating in his charity event tonight. 1.5hrs of spinning with MACCA... should be interesting.

carter - glad to hear the acupuncture seems to be working. I go to a PT that sometimes uses electric acupuncture and although it feels weird it does seem to help. As the weather gets a bit better try to find some nice soft dirt trails to run on (instead of a treadmill). The scenery will hopefully be a bit nicer and it shouldn't be as hard on your body as asphalt.
Also great job with the weight loss.

Sorry I have been MIA - I've been without power for the last 4 days due to the Nor'Easter. Still don't have any power or heat at home but at least it is warming up a bit. Last night it was 48 degrees in my living room!

Training has been a bit derailed too - roads are too dangerous to bike or run on due to down trees and power lines. My indoor cycling gym has no power nor does my local Y. Luckily the Y about 20 min away is open so have been getting in some workouts (and showers) there.

Anyway...
Back to Tri talk -
Chumpy -I would go into St. Anthony's with a run/walk plan if you have not been able to run a full 5K yet. Luckily it sounds like you are well prepared for the swim and bike so those should not be a problem. I would try to run until each aid station (about every mile) then walk for :30 sec to a minute while you grab a drink and catch your breath. Try to start the run slowly and build each mile faster than the last one.

That sounds like a reasonable plan. I have run one 5k but that's the furthest I've gone.

Thanks for the ideas...

1. Peer pressure? from the boss?I think I can understand.  Would be great to train w/ an experienced partner.  At the end of the day, take what you can from the experience
2. Go for it!
3. Never heard back from anyone on the shades.  Noty sure how that's gonna be worked out.  Any clues?

I just finished 1500 yds of swimming, and am getting ready to do a trainer ride for 90 mins (target).

Chumps - I'll also be at StA's.  Who else?  Let's get together before the race.

I agree w/ the jog/walk plan.

Hmmm.  I've been in regular contact with Macca's wife on the shades.  My order is in and I should get them next month.  Not sure if they're still taking orders, but you could try contacting Emma McCormack ([email protected]). She's coordinating everything..

Nice brick session. Keep it up!

BTW, "Spin with Macca" charity event last night raised over $12,000 for the Breast Cancer Foundation.  It was a great night with phenomenal support!  If anyone is interested, Chris McCormack is teaming up with BPMSport (a local training company) to participate in Aviva Singapore 70.3 this weekend and will be racing for the Breast Cancer Foundation.  If you would like to make a donation, please check out: http://www.ammado.com/community/113158

Finally, beautiful weather here in VA and I got in a 48 mile road ride today.  So nice to be outside!!!  I also did my first outdoor run on Tuesday, and I felt really good.  No worse for the wear.  I will do the same tomorrow, and maybe do my weekend long run part treadmill, part outdoors. Come on, SPRING!!!  : )  I am getting really excited for my Oly in April and I'm looking at a Sprint for June that has a trail run - that would be a first for me.

FRi:  7.5 mi run
SAT: 45 mi ride + 1 mi run (fast brick)
SUN: hurting -
The feeling of a hard work out after an easy couple of weeks: PRICELESS,
- and so is the taste of a cold Guiness or Smithwicks'

One month to go before St. Anthony's.  Will be focused training, body detox and (hopefully) one weekly (or more) swim sessions.

My first race (St Anthony's) is scheduled for April 25... less than a month from now.

This weekend I did the full distance
FRI: PM Bike 30.7 (20.7 avg mph) followed by 6.23 mi run (9:37 pace)
SAT: AM 1500 yd swim TT in 26:04 (1:44 /100 yd pace)

I am shooting for a time of 2:50 or less at St A's.  it's a flat course but lots of curves, there will also be many athletes on the course, which cause bottlenecks, wide turns, etc.

Hello, all!  Sounds like everyone is gearing up for race season!  I had my first race last Sunday - a short backwards sprint in Manassas (1.4 mile run, 4 mile bike, 250 swim, 250 entries).  I ended up 2nd place overall female.  My total swim/bike/run time was good enough for 1st but I got beaten on the transitions.  Bummer!  Anyway, I was really happy and I had a blast.  I will finish my race report ASAP if anyone is interested.

I am feeling really good about two big improvements lately.  One is that I have taken :30 or so off of my 300 yd swim time (a distance that we often do as part of the warm-up, so I time it a lot), and I don't feel like I am working any harder.  I think I have gotten a little stronger with bigger paddles for pull drills, and I think I have figured out how to be a little more streamlined.  The second is that I have lost about 17 pounds or so.  I can really feel a difference in my comfort on the bike and in reduced stress on my various joints that tend to talk to me on the run.  My sciatic nerve pain has really responded to acupuncture and is doing much better overall.

My next big race is an Oly in three weeks.  I have done at least three 3+ hour workouts - one long bike and two long bricks and I'm feeling really ready.  I can't wait!

Good luck to everyone who has something coming up!  Keep us posted.

AWESOME!!!  I am getting the itch to race, but my first isn't until 4/24.

Great about the swim time improvement and the weight loss.  Last yr I lost 40 total, taken 5 back, but dropping that weight was (in my opinion) the factor for my improvements.

Keep up the great work!

Trk-

That is great! I am sure that you have the ability to break 2:50 at St. A's! Now it is just a matter of putting it all together on race day.

My next Tri is about 1 month away - Alcatraz. I got some good training in this weekend too - the weather was gorgeous up here in CT. Did a 63 mile ride followed by a 20 min tempo run at 7:30 pace on Sat and an easy 1.5 hour run on Sunday AM. Two more weeks of heavy training then it's taper time

AWESOME JOB!!! Work on those transitions - it's easy to make up time there. Was there anything in particular that you think slowed you down?

Thx!  I am hoping to do so, but as a first OLY, I want to keep the expectations in check.

G'luck at Alcatraz.  Tough swim and run to T1 - or so I've heard.

I have the rest of the week to train and then it's peak time, to St Tony's on Sat.
