Wow! By the way you're right - Although I would say I feel more like Catcher in the Rye and Judy Bloom. But most times I feel like Native Son! Ok end of hijacked thread. Survival is the name of the game... or it was, when we were fighting a lot harder for food, shelter and hot cave-dudes. The basic roots of xenophobia probably stem back to a time when anyone coming into our tribe could bring disease and competition for food and the survival of members of the tribe. Then being a racist, or a "tribalist" probably could save your life. "You, yea you, the caveman with the smallpox, take a hike, here's a big ole rock in the back of your head to remind you to stay away". Now it has no purpose other than to divide us. In other words we are all fighting our survival instincts every day. I suspect us even more so than the average Joe who is not out on the weekends racing against people they do not know. On one hand as tri's we race as a competition so we hone that "Dog eat Dog" survival skill, even if we only compete against our PR's, ages and ever expanding anatomy as we run screaming and shrieking into middle age. On the other we are well educated and fairly smart cookies (the Chocolate Chunk Macadamia Nut Cookies of the athletic world. Not that there is anything wrong with Oatmeal Raisen). So we have these instincts that we are pretty smart about but our guts sometimes tell us to smack first and ask questions later. So fight it when you can but on some level self forgiveness for the occaissional faux pas is called for. This ramble brought to you by a woman who is avoiding bed but needs to run 10 miles in the morning. Edited by nliedel 2005-07-12 8:28 PM |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() As a female beginner- I not really intimidated by men in races- I'm intimidated by experienced triathletes. What a fabulous idea! I would bet that would be the trend. I don't think women new to the sport are intimidated by "men". I would bet they are intimidated by the ability of the competitive athlete ... I would also bet that many men are also. I would imagine that there are quite a few men that are anxious about getting "dropped/smoked" by competitive female triathletes. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() igbomb - 2005-07-12 12:56 PM Feel free to name one other area of society where declaring 'no women allowed' is not met with derision and protests from feminists. I know a man who leads a male-only support group for men with anger-management issues. No women are allowed in. Women with anger-management issues certainly exist, but the issues these guys are working on need to be done in a like-minded group free of some of the triggers that upset them. I don't know of anyone who has a problem with that. [I think that's a pretty good analogy for why I'm doing Danskin as a 40 year old overweight woman. I want to work on these issues in an environment I feel is safe from some of the triggers that upset me. ] I know a boarding school for teen-aged boys with dyslexia. They have particular learning issues that are common to boys and the school's logistics work better if they keep it single-sexed. Girls with learning disabilities certainly exist but find someplace else to go. I'm not aware of anyone who has a problem with this. My husband belongs to a men's group at the church that meets for breakfast meetings on Friday mornings. They are reading some book together and pretend they're going to discuss the chapter, though I think they mostly blow that off and talk about exactly the same stuff a women's group would talk about. But the friendships formed are important to my husband and I know the dynamic would be different if women were in it. I don't know of anyone who has a problem with this. I can't speak for all feminists everywhere, but I have excellent feminst credentials. For example, I was a charter member of the local NOW chapter, I've got a degree from a women's college, and I served on a Title IX advisory board (approving grant applications) in the early 80's. I have most of the issues of the first couple of years of MS. Magazine in my attic somewhere. I honestly have no problem with men coming together to work on their issues. Never have, never will. I asked my mother once, in the early seventies, if she was "for women's lib." She explained that she was for "people's lib", and letting people break out of societal constraint and be who they were benefited everybody. I agreed with her. But our heretical views made us have to leave southern Michigan. Listening to Cervalo really reminded me of how hard it was to live there. Gwendal |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not to sound like a sissy, but men have body issues too. I understand that some women may not want strange men oogling them, but there are plenty of guys out there that feel the same way. I, for instance, am an overweight ex-athlete that looks rediculous in tri shorts. Although my shape has improved over the last six months, one of my biggest anxieties about my upcoming tri is that I will be standing on the beach with all of these hardbodies, and I'll be sticking out like Bozo the clown. I think the division between tri athletes boils down to fitness and ability level, not gender. |

Giver ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() cerveloP3 - 2005-07-12 3:34 PM My point was that people use it, a la Rush Limbaugh, in things like "Femi Nazi" to elicit a prescribed response. He/they knows it gets people's blood going... So while one person used it on here, probably most were not offended, as I understand what he meant, which was militant, mullet wearing, "all sex is rape" feminists. The people who commented on the use of this were from MA and WI, which politically have always been near Socialist. Ted Kennedy? Are you kidding? Stay out of this one.... you don't stand a chance. 1) So using an offensive term because you know it "gets people's blood going" is OK? If that's true, then I guess it's OK to throw around the "N" word. "Sure I called you an "N", but it's OK, I was just trying to get you riled up." 2) Do you live under a rock? Actually, you probably live in a shack in the woods, working on your manifesto. You must be a little out of touch with the civilized world to think that most people wouldn't be offended by the term "femi-nazi." 3) "...militant, mullet wearing, "all sex is rape" feminists." You're kidding, right? Yeah I know you implied that was what the OP was saying, but those are your words. They came from your head. You're clearly hiding behind other posters comments to spout off about your warped world view. The poster that used "femi-nazi" retracted it, but you've used that single term to construct a string of posts where you say you're only telling us what those people meant. But in reality, you're using them to, in a cowardly manner, tell us that basically Rush is your God and his diatribe is the alter you worship at. Why don't you just come out and say it? Tell us what you think. Enlighten us with an original thought. |

I, for instance, am an overweight ex-athlete that looks rediculous in tri shorts. I think the division between tri athletes boils down to fitness and ability level, not gender. Here's the deal. I am an overweight 41 year old mommmy with a baby belly. I did not bounce back like Sarah Jessica Parker and think she should probably be taken out and shot. I did my first tri last weekend thinking how stupid I looked in my tri suit. There were all sorts of bodies there, hard and not. Truthfully the hardbodies were so darn far ahead of me they didn't even see me! The rest of the people there are too worried about how they look in their shorts to bother about how you look in yours. I did it, I stuffed my butt into that stupid Bratwurst Casing and I did it and you can do it too and I bet you look darn fine in shorts! The best looking guy out there last weekend was a 300+ pound guy who was working so hard and just trying his best. He was not beating himself and out of his element he was doing it one step at a time, sweating and being the best athlete he could be. I have said it before and will say it again, my heros are not the 20 year old hardbodies who were born with running shoes on. It's the real life, sweat and grit re-emerging athlete who steps from behind the desk to overcome all fear and do something extraordinary! Welcome to the land of my heros. Please step up on this pedastal. |

You could order it online and keep it under your pillow. Renee, you're making me nervous. Camisoles are just tank tops with skinny straps, right? Am I that out of it? (thank God I live in the part of the country the fashion comes to last and am moving to the place that fashion doesn't come to at all.) Camisoles are practically my uniform (I've got broad shoulders and a nice back, sue me)! Welshy, I've got black, brown, tan, off-white, white with flowers, red, blue, purple and several shades of green, but not a single pink camisole. Thank God for that. |
