Invigilator - 2008-05-26 12:12 PM

My workouts have been a bit off lately, due to illness and work, but I am on the mend and 5 days away from my tri.  500m-25k-5k

I posted my planned workouts in today's blog.  Would you take a look at them and let me know if I am pushing too hard / too close?

Your plan sounds very reasonable. You're doing your most strenous workout (6-8K run) early in the week which is good. Swimming and cycling isn't as taxing on the body so it's okay to due them later in the week. For your 2K run later in the week, just don't over do it. Especially with your calves. Either go really slow (Z1 only) or maybe just do another cycling session. I just wouldn't chance screwing up your calves, know what I mean?

Don't over do it, and make sure you are recovering significantly before starting your next session.

Timmeh! - 2008-05-26 10:53 AM Congrats Gloria, way to go!!! Caius, thanks for the advise! I am definately going to try and get out a few more times before next weekend, to try and get used to it. I'm also going to look for a neoprene swim cap, hoping that will help as well.

Oh yeah, one more thing which actually helps. Start taking cold showers. No, your wife didn't ask me to suggest it

It really does work and helps your body to get aclimatized to the cold temps.

Thanks for the advice Caius.  I got back from my run a while ago.  7.27k (PR for distance).  It's nice to have the hardest thing of the week out of the way.

I'll do a race report later today.  My 300 meter pool swim was about 4:30.  I've done 300 yards in 3:58 in practice.  But nerves, adrenalin, other people's elbows and feet, congestion on the turnarounds, etc. slowed me.  I did 300 meters in the warm up and never could find my rhythm.  T1 was a little over 2 minutes - I was trying to calm myself down and not "fumble around", I tried to stay slow and deliberate.  The bike was a blast.  I hit 38 mph at one point and my time for 8.5 miles including T2 was about 30 minutes.  There were some uphills too.  My run was 15'ish and it was humid with no wind.

I had a ball; wife and kids were there too.

I missed 2nd place by 18 seconds.

Things are getting exciting.  I am definitely into the tapper now.  I did a bike/run transition practice, as well as a wet feet/socks & shoes on practice.

I am also starting to layout the gear in the garage.

Wow great job Terry , congrats!!!

ok so dumb newbie questions here..what does it mean to "stitch" ?I have seen the posts but never that term before.

Another one...there is a Triathlon in 3 weeks very close to home , I just found out about it. There will definitly be a swim this time ( they filled that lake ! ) . The bike and run are all on a fairly flat course. It sounds like a good starter tri for me. I am just wondering how close together I can plan my events. I feel recovered from Saturday's race and I sure had a blast doing it. Any suggestions ?

If I do deceide to do it , it falls on June 14 I think that's a Saturday(?).  How should I plan my training if so to prepare without over doing it ?

Gloria,

A stitch is that rally sharp pain that people get in their side during exercise.  I think it might have to do with eating or drinking too much.

I say go for that tri.  I am not sure how to go about the workouts, but if you feel recovered, hopefully you are already back out there.

Gloria,

Here's an explanation pulled off a running site:

The Stitch

Description:
"We've all had this one, a sudden sharp pain in the side of the upper abdomen at the base of the ribs. The side stitch typically strikes when you're really pushing yourself and fades quickly when you slow down or stop. The stitch is particularly common for new runners still adjusting to the rigors of running.

Likely causes:
The pain is caused by a spasm of the diaphragm, the muscle that controls your breathing. There are a number of possible reasons for this. If your breathing isn't controlled and disciplined, the diaphragm may be complaining. If you are running too soon after eating, your heavy stomach may literally be tugging at the ligaments connected to the diaphragm. Or you may simply be running too fast for your body's breathing machinery to keep up.

There are some other explanations out there, which tells me that no-one has a really clear idea what causes it, but I know that I get it pretty much any time I run, but if I'm running a slower, more controlled pace then I don't suffer nearly as much. When these are at their worst then I'm forced to walk. It has me worried for race day since I really suffered on the brick last weekend.

As for youself - I say sign up for the next Tri. I'll be racing this weekend (first one..woohoo), and then plan to race again every 3 weeks or so for a total of 4 Sprints this summer. So first race June 1, then next one June 21. Plenty of time in between.

hey everyone,

thanks for the explanations on what the dreaded "stitch" means ....I haven't had it happen to me yet and I feel lucky after reading about it. I haven't made up my mind yet on the June Tri but for sure am doing the one on July 14th.

Good luck to all of our racers this weekend...Neil and any one else !!!

It sure was a thrill to cross the finish line I can see how you become addicted to the sport

I find that the tapper and recovery for these Try-a-Tri's and short sprints is so small that doing one a month through the summer is no problem at all.  Given that fact, I couldn't stand the gap in the schedule.

It's such a motivation tot he training, especially as we get into another glorious summer and can get pulled in so many other directions.

True.  I was going to gear up for an Oly in August.  But since it is over 2 hours away and gas is pushing $4.00 gallon (while in Venezuela it is 12 CENTS a gallon!), I'll exchange the Oly for a couple of local sprints instead.

Did a 5K run at lunch - last one before the big day on Sunday. Legs felt a bit heavy but I'm hoping that was due to the ride last night + not enough sleep.

Taking tomorrow off, and then a short OWS on Saturday morning - and that's it for training before my first Tri. I remember thinking how far off it was back in January/February, and now I can't believe how soon it will be.

Very excited, and nervous. Even though it's the first one, I hope that I've trained well enough to put in a good performance,. I'm not too worried about where I'll place (figure I'll be nearer the bottom of my AG), but I just want to make sure I gave it my all and be happy with it.

We'll see come Sunday!

Caius - When you are training for a HIM, what is the maximum amount of training hours you put in during a week?   I am maxing at almost 8.5 right now in my Oly 2x BT plan and it is about all I can do to juggle the training, work, family, keeping the yard up.... etc.

Thank goodness for a taper beginning in a few weeks!!!!

Indeed. In fact, once you have a good solid fitness base, recovery would be very quick and I would say that you could do a sprint each and every weekend.

Well squishy, I'm sorry to say that I won't be at the Milton sprint. I'm sorry. It's not the weather will be too chilly. But rather, I've been cooerced into doing the Becel Ride for Heart with about 20 other of my work colleagues.

I wish I could be there to not only meet you in person but also to cheer you on. You will have a super fantastic time. Like you said, forget about where you place. What is important is that you participate in the event and have fun which I'm more than positive you will. Can't wait to read your RR!

When I was training for my first HIM last year, I averaged about 8-10 hours per week. There were a couple of weeks where I would hit 12 hours but that was not often. In general, if you can dedicate at least 1 hour per day Monday-Friday and have a nice 4 hour long ride on Saturday and fit a 2 hour long run somewhere in there then you'll complete the distance without a problem.

As I'm training for my first IM distance race this year, I'm finding it incredibly difficult. I was doing well for the past 2 months but the past 3 weeks have been horrible. For example, I've managed to squeeze in just 1 hour of running this week. It's horrible.

Like you said, between work and family I am finding it incredibly difficult to consistantly squeeze in the hours required. I've given up on the hope of doing well for this IM. At this point, I just want to complete the distance with a smile.

I hear what everyone is saying about balancing training with life. I'm averaging about 6 hours per week, and find it difficult to do that. As the weather gets nicer and the days longer, I can get up a bit earlier. I like to get it done while the family is still sleeping or just getting ready. If I wait too long into the day I find I run out of energy and am not really motivated to workout.

I got my last workout in tonight before my first tri this weekend as well. I'm just going to try and get a few more open water swims in and try and acclimate to the cold temps. Lake temp here is in the low 50's.

Getting really nervous now.............

I am confident for my race, but MAN AM I EXCITED AND ANXIOUS TO GET STARTED!!!!!!!!!!

I have a very natural rythm in my swim, but I am going to have to make sure I don't over do it on the bike.

I am also excited that my BT tri-suit might show up in the mail tomorrow.  IF not, it's my jammers swim trunks and my MOGO t-shirt.

I am all packed.  Checked, double checked, and wife checked.  Thankfully I am pretyt busy between now and bed time tomorrow.

Caius, sorry to see you won't be at the race this weekend, it would have been cool to meet our "mentor". Maybe another race later in the season - as long you as you don't swear of tri's after IMLP.

Invigilator, Timmeh, and Tracy - looks like it will be the 4 of us racing this weekend. Good luck to all of us, and we just have to remember to have as much fun as possible (especially when the pain sets in). Invigilator, you're definetly sounding the most confident, and I can't remember which day Timmeh is racing, but I think you're going to be the first of us with the Saturday race, so you get to post the first race report!
