Uh oh...I'm trying not to panic.

About an hour ago I was in a deep knee bend at work beside a patient's bed doing something & my ankle just collapsed.  The pain was severe & lasted about 30 minutes.  I immediately put ice on it & wrapped it up.

No swelling, no bruising.  I can walk, but it hurts a little (not too much) in basically my whole foot & ankle.

I'm just in "wait & see" mode right now, but doubt I'll get in all my miles this week.  I've got my 1st tri on Oct 5th!

Worried - Kim

Any clue on what it is yet? Hopefully, it's nothing a few days of rest can't handle and then your tri can go on as planned.

Got an appointment tomorrow at 1pm with a very special orthopedic surgeon (actually a BT friend who PM'd me & offered to see me quickly!) I'm driving 100 miles to see her in her office because she has the expertise & the motivation to see that I get back in action quickly & safely.

I don't know if she's o.k. with me revealing her true identitiy, but when it's all over I'll write a nice article about how she saved me! (I hope!)

It really hurts now.  I've kept the ankle wrapped all day & have propped it up as much as possible (12-hour shift & all).  Still no swelling - GOOD!

Hopefully, just a strain & I'm just a baby!

5.1 miles today.  Little more pain than last time is making it obvious that I'm dumb for trying to build up miles while recovering the knee.  Back to the 10 minute warmup, 40 minute run at 12:00 pace, 10 minute cooldown that worked well for me, for the rest of the month at least. I think I'd be recovering pretty quickly if I just stopped worrying about adding more miles and speed.

Kim:  Rest up for your October race as much as needed.  I'll work in some extra miles for the challenge to cover any you need.

Hope you get a good  report today from the ortho.

Todd

Just got back from the doc.

"Posterior tibialis strain"

  1. Physical Therapy
  2. Walk/Run about 1 mile in a couple of days & see how it goes
  3. Can walk my 5k on 9/27 as long as I'm doing o.k. (won't risk the tri by doing this if I don't feel great!)
  4. Sees no reason why I can't do the tri in October!!!!!

Thanks Dr. Susan Ott, at Sand Hill Bone & Joint in Plant City, FL - a fellow BT triathlete, "Socks"!

It was TOTALLY worth the 4 hours of driving to go see her!

I'll keep you guys posted.

That doesn't sound too bad! It's amazing who you can meet on these boards.

Good luck on the rehab!

3 miles in this evening before I did some strength training. It's finally starting to feel like autumn outside (at least in PA).

5.2 with some mile repeats. I love doing speedwork. It felt like fall here also (Va Beach). I almost wanted to put a shirt with sleeves on.

Just FYI, I noticed on the team spreadsheet that the totals for rows 41 and 42 won't currently be included in the totals (Sept 29,30).  I'll update these the next time I'm in the document unless someone else fixes it first.

Looks like no training for me today, unfortunately.  I'll probably spend 12 hours at school...  I need to finish up a grant proposal, and then the cycling team is meeting up this evening for a bbq.   Tomorrow should be 4.5-4.6 miles, which should put me somewhere in the mid 60% range.

No.  If you look at row 9, the formulas should be a sum of 13 to 42.  If you look at your column for example, it's currently set to SUM(B13:B40).    I fixed those.   However, I now see that the 'team total' summation is also incorrect for each week (I think it's off by 1 day each week).   I'll let the next person in fix that.   Otherwise I'll update it next time.   Were our submission totals based on the actual real mileage per person added, or from the total column?

The totals that were sent to Shawn are everyone's total miles for the week.  So, with the exception of the last week of the month, those have all been correct.

As far as the team weekly totals, I changed to add together the row for everyone's totals for the week.  For example, summing across row 4 instead of from the bottom.

Feel free to check my work and make sure it looks ok to you.

1.04 mile rehab walk/jog today.  It sucked.  Not too much pain, but not too much fun either.  I'm headed to the "ice & elevation" couch for 20 minutes.

Looks like everyone is doing well!  Keep up the great work!

Thanks Jen for fixing the spread sheet...I guess that's what I get for copy/pasting from another team.

Rehab sucks, but it's totally worth it in the long run.  Hang in there.

4.88 today.  Felt ok through most of the run, bad at the end.  During the cooldown, once I'd actually dropped from a run to fast walk right at the end, I felt something bad happen in the knee.  No idea what it is, but it's got ice on it now.  Looks like I'm going to have to play it by ear the next few days. I hope I can still bike, I've got a ride in the morning.

Ha!  I was thinking the same thing when the pain started.  Of course, it just makes me want to win more.  If I have to hop on one foot for the last 17.5 miles, I'm hitting my goal!  Imagine the bragging rights if we win with two of our runners injured!

OK, maybe I can't be quite that hard core, but I'm going to do as much stretching and icing as I can to try to keep it from getting worse.  I'm tempted to try doing more frequent runs in the 2 mile range, since the pain is never significant at that point.  I may actually try that on Sunday and do half my run in the morning and half at night.

Dr. Google says its either a Bakers Cyst or Hamstring Tendonitis.  I don't particularly like the sound of either.

Hope your ankle decides to treat you well!

Hmmmm...does hopping on one foot count in the September Running Challenge?

Maybe we should ask the Running god...
