I would just like to drop in and pay obeisance to Rockin' Bob Stocks. You guys have the best mentor in the world and one of the finest athletes, too, especially in the water. Few AGers are faster. And ... he's the nicest person you could ever come across.

Oh, did I mention he was also very experienced and wise and really, really, really knows what he's doing?

Wow, and to think all of us signed up before getting this glaring recommendation!  Imagine how many people would have signed up if you had posted this earlier!

By the way, has everyone noticed our mentor in the banner advertising the BT gear pre order?  Another sign that we are in with a winner!

We're at the bottom of the list, I'll bump us.  I got in a trainer ride last night while wtching the movie "Wanted".  It had a murky plot, questionable dialog and the constant drown of background music so you could barely hear said dialog.  In other words it made no sense.  However, lots of things blew up so its a good trainer movie.

BTW, I think my feta streak will fall today.

Okay guys and gals, it's HUMP DAY!!!! (For those that aren't married anyways )

Had a great swim workout this morning which brought to mind another little swim tip or two! Here goes:

Head position: For OWS (or endurance swimming) it's important to be a little low in the water rather than "on top" of the water like sprinters. FWIW - We are not sprinters!!! To achieve this low position you want to position your head at a comfortable angle looking ahead at a slight angle. (If you're standing on a street looking at 20 story building 2 blocks away, that's the head position)

If your feet tend to sink many people try to correct this by driving their heads down in the water. I saw a guy doing this Monday morning in the pool, he looked like a turtle. To correct for sinking feet you want to counterbalance  by pressing your upper sternum and collar bones down, not your head. Your lungs act as a center of buoyancy when you swim so think of your chest at the nipple line as the fulcrum.

I'll leave it there for now. Let me know if this is confusing or if it helps.

My hands are still shaking from the workout this morning!! God that feels good!!

Thanks for the great tips on head positioning Bob.  I've been working on a lot of little stuff with form lately.  Would really like to see a 1:05 at IMMOO this year.  Great swim this morning.  I love those that leave you all shakey and bakey.

You are going to have to have more purple in your graphs!! I think you can see a sub 1:00 without too much work, just a lot of consistency!!

Oh yea, like more swimming is going to help.  Oh wait, your right, it probably will.  Once my 30 week training plan starts I will be swimming 3-4 times a week.

Thanks Bob... you may have seen that guy on Sunday also.  In my effort to "swim downhill" I was over doing it.

I was going to have an easy run today but my new Garmin just showed up so I guess I have a 30 minute TT to get my HR zones.

Have fun with the TT.  Be ready to HUUUUUURT!! Should actually take about 50 minutes I have been told.  10 minute warm-up, 30 minutes as hard as you can maintain for TT, 10 minute cool-down.  Only taking HR for the last 20 minutes of TT.  Have fun!

Hey group! I need some positive thoughts today---I've got an MRI at 215 today for a possible pelvic fracture. I'm really, really hoping it's just a strain and I'll be ready to shake and bake for my marathon next week, but I've got to get the all clear first. Regardless, I'm out for running until the day before my marathon (1/18) assuming no fracture. I guess that just means lots more time in the pool, right? I'm going to become a realy swimmer yet! Bob--can you keep up with some good swim workout ideas? I'll need that next week to keep me occupied for an hour a day in the pool. I'll let you all know what the MRI shows this afternoon.

SweetK - 2009-01-07 11:15 AM I rode my bike on the trainer last night and it felt mostly good - the first 2 minutes were tough. I really, really, really, really, really wanted to ride longer because it felt so good to sweat and sweat I did, even at 12 minutes In a few weeks I should be in the pool, and if my flexion is good enough I may even get to run sooner than expected. During PT this morning, I hit flexion of 130°, which is more than enough to run (said my PT) but then he also said I won't be comfortable until I hit 140°, which maybe less than 4 weeks away. So I could be running slowly in a few weeks, way before 3 months.

That's great news!!!

I checked my health insurance yesterday and found out that I can go to a nutritionist for 6 visits with no costs/co-pays.  I found a sports nutritionist in my area that accepts my insurance.  My first visit is next Wednesday (1/14).  Hopefully, she can help me!  (I'm a hard case when it comes to changing my eating.)

No morning workout for me today, but I try to run for 75 minutes tonight.

Yeah! Good news! No pelvic fracture at this point! Probably like everyone else, I'm overtrained and my running is doing more harm than good. I'm clear to run Houston Marathon next weekend SLOWLY if I don't run this week or next and let some of the strain heal. If it hurts during the marathon, I stop, and I do not go for any PR at all. After that, I've got to lay off for a little bit and skip the marathon I signed up for in February. And probably March, and focus on biking and swimming and strength training. Thanks so much for the good thoughts and well wishes. It's a huge relief and also a little bit of a reality check that I can't do everything and never take a break. That's a hard pill to swallow, but it's worth it! So....here's to swimming and biking alot for a while!

Nice run Jeff!!! I'm not exactly sure about your target HR's from your TT. This would be a great time to take advantage of the Gold Membership and ask the coaches. Let us know what they come up with. Kevin, my coach, comes up with my HR's for me.

I have a LT test in a couple weeks that I am not looking forward to. I HATE the pain that goes along with threshold tests. Nice work!!

How's the Feta taste today?

Great news Aimee!! Let yourself rest for this week before your run. Your training will not be hurt in the least and your body will benefit from the rest. The little bit of running you are going to do this week has no purpose other than to keep you busy.  You run the risk of irritating an injury that otherwise may completely heal before your race.

I have had some of my best races after recovering from an illness that kept me from training for 2 weeks before the race. I believe two things happen when this occurs. 1) Your body heals itself by resting, Especially with an endurance athlete that is constantly stressing the body farther than it's supposed to be. 2) Because the last week was spent without training the expectations for the race go down and you will run more relaxed which itself is a better way to race marathons and endurance events.

Make any sense?

Great news for you!  Take care to listen to the Dr. and not push too hard in Houston.  Heal up quickly.  You'll have the bike and swim nailed by the time you get back to running.
