I do generally try to set a few goals for myself each year, but I haven't finalized them for 2009 yet. I guess I need to get cracking on that! LOL |

Master 1675 Suwanee, Ga. | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's New Manatees - FULL! :-) I have made some this year ...for the first time on ages....hence the blog title I have right now...2009 The Year of Big Changes. I list mine as "Goals" for the year and not resolutions...just my preference. Some of the changes are things that I am already working on (wimpy personal stuff ) but some of the others are:
There may be some but I can't recall right now. I don't do this often but the more I get involved with tri's and being around motivated people the more it motivates me to tackle things like this and listing them as goals instead of resolutions seems to help me stay with them. Happy New Year everyone. Steve |

Melon Presser 52116 | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's New Manatees - FULL! :-) It's been wonderful to read all of your resolutions! I challenge each of you to take one, or one part of your resolutions, and turn it into a SMART goal. You may have heard the acronym before: here's an example based on one of my resolutions. "I will follow my training plan." S = Specific. I will follow Don Fink's 30-week Competitive program to complete IMKY. M = Measurable. I will do exactly what's on the plan 9 days out of each 10 (see below). There are three key workouts (1 per discipline) each week, so 30 key workouts per discipline: I will hit 27 key workouts for each sport during this plan. A = Achievable. It's not likely I could do the plan perfectly, so I adjusted my expectations. R = Reasonable. I believe so. If necessary, I will adjust to 8 out of 10, and/or 25 out of 30 key. T = Time Frame. It's a 30-week program that I will begin on Feb. 1. I further challenge you to state your goal in the positive, as in what you WILL do (e.g., I will do 9/10 workouts) rather than in the negative (I can miss 1/10 workouts). |

I so loved those books when I was a kid. Great advice on the resolutions/goals, Yanti. OK, so looking at my resolution to stretch every day: SPECIFIC: I will do a set of six specific stretches and strength exercises every day. MEASURABLE: I will do these stretches at least six out of seven nights a week. I will log my stretching sessions to hold myself accountable. ACHIEVABLE: I should do these stretches every day, but I recognize that there may be days when I get home too late or just don't feel like it. Doing my stretches six out of seven days a week is acceptable (and achievable). REASONABLE: Definitely. The stretch routine only takes 20 minutes, and I can do it while watching TV or even in my office at work if I know I won't be home until late. TIME FRAME: I will stick to this program for at least two months, and then reevaulate my routine based on how my recovery is going. I may want to try different stretches or strength exercises at that point. I kind of feel like a dork for spelling it out like that, but it actually helps a lot. Thanks, Yanti! |

Expert 1112 I'm a Tennessee girl living in SoCal. | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's New Manatees - FULL! :-) Great challenge for us, Yanti! My goal: I WILL lose 63 pounds in 2009. S = Specific - The goal in and of itself is very specific. I WILL lose 63 pounds this year! M = Measurable - I will be weighing in each Saturday to monitor my progress. A = Achievable - By sticking with my Weight Watchers plan and training, this should be a very achievable goal. R = Reasonable - I think this seems like a very reasonable goal. It means averaging a loss of 5.25 pounds per month or roughly 1 pound per week. While I will be pushing myself a little, I'm not setting myself up for failure by having a goal of trying to lose 2-3 pounds per week either. T = Time Frame - My time frame will be the whole of 2009. My final weigh-in will be Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009. Yes, I admit that I still have a long way to go on my weight loss journey. I'm making progress though, so that's all that matters. I've never been one to really talk about my weight here on BT other than in the WW thread on the weight loss forum. Yanti obviously knows where I'm at since I've had the pleasure of spending time with her in person on a few occasions. I've always had the fear that if people realized how heavy I still was, that I wouldn't be taken seriously here by many people. I've decided that I've had enough of that kind of thinking. I am who I am and if someone wants to judge me because of the number on a scale, then that's their loss and not mine. I changed the title of my blog last week to "2009: The Year of ME!" because that's exactly what I intend to do. I have spent most of my life putting everyone else in front of myself. I've always put myself totally on the back burner to the needs, desires, and priorities of other around me. That all changes this year! My "job" for 2009 is to take care of me which includes taking serious action about my weight and no longer just giving it lip service. My 63 pound goal isn't just some arbitrary number I pulled from the air. It marks a major milestone for me. Losing that 63 pounds will put me at the lowest weight I've been since my early 20's and I'll be 45 in about 6 weeks. It will also take me out of the 200's and into the 100's, so it's a pretty big deal for me. Eek! That's probably about the most personal information I've ever shared here. Wow, and I'm still actually alive and breathing. LOL Edited by BunnyB 2009-01-01 2:04 PM |

Veteran 334 | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's New Manatees - FULL! :-) My Goal: "I will follow my training plan and learn to be patient as I gain fitness and strength." S = Specific. I will follow BT Beginner Half Iron Man Plan. (20 Weeks) M = Measurable. Follow the training plan, slow and steady. My first concern is to get the workout in and not worry about speed. Complete the workouts as scheduled. A = Achievable. Log workouts. Track progress. Use the Online Coaches and Mentors on BT for help and motivation. R = Reasonable. Understand that work will interfere with working out from time to time and not let that be a reason to stop training all together. Regroup as needed to stay on track. T = Time Frame. The plan is 20 weeks. My race is 23 weeks away. I will start the plan on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. This will allow me to have long runs and bike sessions on the weekend and a day off during the work week. And as my fortune from my fortune cookie said last night : "The Human Body was designed to walk, run or stop it wasn't built for coasting." Above all...I need to keep moving and pushing forward to the starting line. HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE! THANKS FOR THE CONTINUED SUPPORT. ----- Edited by noony 2009-01-01 2:09 PM |

Thank you for your brave, beatiful, honest post. We are honored that you shared something so personal with the Manatees. [snip] Those of us that have gotten to *know* you through BT, know what a wonderful person you are! Dearest Miss Bunny! Well, you already know how highly I think of you and respect your journey. Thank you so much for sharing it with us. You are a woman of great integrity, courage, and dedication, and all of us are learning from you. I share a particular empathy with Melissa because I know what it's like to lose a huge amount of weight. It's a fairly silent journey because when people see you, they just see someone who's overweight, they don't see someone who's struggled and worked hard to already lose a significant amount of weight. |

Truer words could not have been spoken, Yanti! I'm usually reluctant to share where my weight still is because I've had people made some pretty rude comments to me in the past. I shared once with a woman that I had, at that time, lost just over 50 pounds and she literally said, "Wow, if you've already lost 50 pounds, you must have been REALLY fat before!" I was devastated for a couple of weeks. I just kept hearing her judgmental tone over and over in my head and felt completely defeated. It took a lot for me to finally dust myself off, realize she was ignorant, and then continue on my journey. |

Expert 973 Berkeley, Calif. | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's New Manatees - FULL! :-) Melissa, you are SO AWESOME and I love what you wrote. You're absolutely right that what matters is what you think and feel, and not how others *might* perceive you. Also, I think it's a fantastic New Year's resolution (even if you don't believe in them) in and of itself to make 2009 the Year of You. It takes a lot of effort to focus on yourself when you're so used to focusing on everyone around you. Go for it! |

Expert 1112 I'm a Tennessee girl living in SoCal. | Subject: RE: Beth and Yanti's New Manatees - FULL! :-) I just stumbled across this quote by Fran Tarkenton and I found it very motivating. I just thought I would share it here, too: "Success, in my view, is the willingness to strive for something you really want. The person not reaching the top is no less a success than the one who achieved it, if they both sweated blood, sweat and tears and overcame obstacles and fears. The failure to be perfect does not mean you're not a success." |
