You guys are eager for some torture... Yes there will be a Feb challenge.. trying to figure out details at the moment...

but

guys there's one day left in the month of january. tomorrow at noon the jan challenge is over.. so if you didn't make the cut its ok(we have to work harder next month).. why do i say this.. you have probably done more work this month than any month prior.. with that said congrats, on working on a healthier you and tri prep.

So, give me some feed back of the accomplishments you've gotten from this challenge. ex.. confidence in running, biking, swimming.. you know what i mean.. hopefully..

a note from me to you. this is turning to be very fun for me. i enjoy helping you. thanks for your willingness to accept me as your mentor.

Feb challenge will be more difficult.. but attainable.

look forward to hearing from you.

OK, here it is.. February challenge..

28 days.. can it be done... lets see

8500m in the pool (if you feel up to it 10000m)
50 miles on the bike.. (if you feel up to it 60 miles)
30 mile running. (if you feel up to it 40 miles)

this challenge requires longer training segments or more training weekly.. your choice.

don't hurt yourselves.. this will require planning.. especially if you the bigger challenge.

Completed my first Tri of the year - JCC Indoor Triathlon.

It was 20 min swim, 20 min cycle on spin bike and 20min run on indoor track. I did better than I thought and felt better on everything except the swim. I could tell that I have not been in the pool during the last week! I just really slowed down after about 500yds but I did squeeze out 850yds in 20 mins. The spin was good (my first time on spin cycle) and the odometer measured 15.3 mi., of course I know that can't be true I will wait for the results to come out tomorrow. I was able to run about 2.5 miles during the timeframe which was great. I went out too hard and then had to find my groove.

All in all it was great and I am glad that I decided to participate at the last minute (yesterday). I pushed myself a lot harder than I would have by myself. The feeling afterwards(minus the sore muscles) reminds me why I love to Tri.

Congratulations and well done! Sounds like you had fun but were being competitive at the same time. You are an inspiration to the rest of the group :)

Mo, in the spirit of our monthly challenge, can you recommend a certain amount of time we should aim to be spending on strength training? Is there a magic formula that says for every 'X' minutes of cardio, we should be doing approx. 'X' minutes of strength work?

All my strength training is done in the off season... i don't lift at all during the race season.. but when i do strength train.. its normally 2 to 3 days a week.. I typically do circuit training which take about 30 mins to complete.. with extra emphasis on key parts.. lats, core, quads, hamstrings and hip flexors..

As for a recommendation.. i would say at least two days a week(total body don't break it up).. focusing on leg, core, arms, and back.. time is optional.. depends on your workout strategy.. strength or leaning up or both.. but stop before race season.. why? during race season you in maintenance mode.. no need to strengthen anymore.. it puts on weight.. you don't want that..

i do circuit training because it give me strength, cardio, and helps lean me up..

Definition of Circuit training: is a type of interval training in which strength exercises are combined with endurance/aerobic exercises, combining the benefits of both a cardiovascular and strength training workout. 'Circuit' means a group of activities /'stations' positioned around the facility that are to be visited in rapid succession. The range of stations includes those comprising resistance equipment (e.g. hydraulic equipment or free weights), as well as allocated spaces to do squat thrusts, pushups, jumping jacks, sit-ups, and other exercises. Each person should complete the activity in one station before they proceed to the next station. They then continue until they have passed through all stations once or twice as required, or until a certain time requirement has been met.

i hope this helps.. let me know if you need more assistance.

Hey Katie,

Jeff Galloway's run\walk method is used by the Running Room, a successful chain of running stores in Canada, to train all levels of runner's from beginners to marathoners.  I have used it myself to train for specific distances until I get comfortable being able to run the entire distance without stopping. If you are interested, I can send you some walk\run training plans from the Running Room website. Let me know.

I am so glad that you liked the book, Katie! FYI - Jayne Williams has a new book coming out in the near future, which focuses on training plans, nutrition, etc.

Regarding the running plans, could you let me know which level and\or distance you are looking for to start at? For example; beginner - 5K or advanced - 5K. This way I know exactly what to search for. Thanks!

In response to Mo’s earlier request, my Jan. challenge feedback:

After my first day in the pool (oh my!), I never, ever, ever would have believed after one month of training, I’d be able to swim 1,000 yards, let alone do it in under 40 minutes.  I also didn’t expect after one month I'd be able to bike, run and/or swim back to back for an hour.  But I can.

I am really surprised at my progress so far, how much fun I'm having, and how dedicated I am to continuing with this.  I truly appreciate all the advice and motivation you all have offered.  It is an enormous help.  I recently signed up for my first tri (in April) and I’m pretty confident I’ll make it!

My key focuses this month:  endurance, learning proper bike form & technique, nutrition (learning to eat breakfast has been especially tough for me).

Again, my sincere thanks to all of you for your great inspirations and suggestions!  Keep ‘em coming!!

Btw, a few more reasons I know Mo’s a great coach:  he’s the only person who could convince me to buy a fitness swimsuit online, and to weigh myself naked – twice – first thing in the morning.  Both with surprisingly positive results, I might add.

Great efforts on running so far.. Initially your HR will be a bear to control.. you are stressing your body in ways its not use too.. That's ok.. don't beat yourself up too much.. When you start to run more. Your Body and HR will adjust.. it takes the body like 14 days to adjust.

Frequency is the key..

another good plan is couch to 5k(interval training plan).. i think the tri you want to do has a 5k run right? I would also challenge you to run try a 5k prior to your triathlon.. this will help build some confidence and will let you where you are.. it sounds a little intimidating, but helpful to how to train, how race, pace, when to speed up, and other things)..

Thanks RunGirl for assisting...

let me know if can help as well..
