NICE!  What did you end up getting for a bike?  I can't wait to get outside also.  6 inches of new snow last weekend kind of put a damper on that one.

He got me a Vilano bike, not very well regarded and actually gets totally dissed on many of the bike forums that I've looked at.  But, my husband said he wasn't going to spend a lot on a bike if I'm not sure I'll stick with it after the race.  I have to agree.  Getting a professional tune-up/adjustment.  We went out on Saturday (big mistake, incredibly cold and windy) and I thought it was pretty great.  I think it's perfect for a beginner like me!!

I am not a great biker, but I have passed people on expensive bikes. So as long as you put the time into biking you will be fine.
Always fun to have a new ride, good luck.

That's great!  Those bike forumns can be written by major gear junkies.  You have to start somewhere!  I'm excited for you!

Thanks guys!!  I'm really excited.  Plus, I just bought a new comfy seat so I can't wait to try it out.  I'll have to let you know how my maiden voyage goes once I get it back and the wind around here calms down.

firstteeth - 2009-12-30 12:14 AM Hoping to get some sort of ok to start training again (at least modified) tomorrow or Thurs.  Just waiting on results of MRI on shoulder.  M.D. is thinking "impingement." It feels quite a bit better, just not "right".  Looking forward to and nervous about the restart of training all at the same timeTongue out.

Have a happy and safe New Year's!

Did you ever get the results of that MRI???  How's the shoulder feel?

Hey, thanks for asking!  Shoulder is getting better each day.

The MRI showed a narrowing of the outlet between the rotator cuff and the acromion (?) consistent with a diagnosis of impingement syndrome.  Recommended a steroid injection and I could go back to training.  Unfortunately, also found some changes in the bone of the humeral head so get to have a bone scan tomorrow to see what's up.  And top it off with a sinus infection as well!  Training will need to wait another couple of days!

Happy belated birthday and hope you are feeling better!!  Oh, and 29 is SO not old!!

Well, that's good news...at least it's not a torn ligament or something.

Back at work today.  Felt bad taking two days off in a row, but doubt I'll be doing my planned workout today.  Need to kick this sinus thing.

Yeah....29 isn't that old, but I can definitely say the "kids" graduating from highschool are from a seriously different generation!

Can we talk supplements for a second?  I was wondering if anyone is taking or has taken COQ10.

Woohoo!!!  After a kind of stressful health couple of weeks, got the all clear and finally feeling like I am up to training again!

And, my husband had decided to do his first triathlon!  He and I did a relay last year.  We are doing the Minneman in MN.

I know there are a couple of threads on this, but does anyone here have any experience with Vibram Five Fingers?  I spend most of my spare time barefoot and am considering trying them.  (Btw, if you haven't already, and are looking for a good read, Born To Run is great.)

That is cool that you can start training again.
Not sure what Vibram is.
I am listening to Born to Run now.

That is such good news.  I love the feeling of being able to get back at it.

I have never used VFF but I kind of want to, just to see what its like.  As of right now, I'm just getting used to new orthodics, so VFF would probably be counter productive.  I have heard good things from both high and low arch people and to tell you the truth, no one has said they hate them....or the negative are just not chiming in.  I also have a second toe that's a good 1/2 cm longer than my big toe...so that's another factor, haha!

It is responsible for a lot of processes within the body.  The main benefit is the destruction of free radicals and creates energy within cells.  Has major antioxidants effects.  It's big with athletes and body builders.

After the holidays I figured I might as well get my weigh in over with. So I thought we could start a Wednesday Weigh-In.

I gained about 6 lbs in December and weighed in this morning at 178, I would like to get back to 170.

Have heard of COQ10 byt had no idea what it was.  Googled it after I saw your post and it appears to have many benefits.  Just like with all supplements I am a little skeptical.  Hope to read more on it when I have the time.  Right now I take a multivitamin, fish oil capsules and vitamin D.

Have seen folks using the Vibram shoes but have not tried them.  There seems to be a movement toward barefoot or more minimalist running.  For once, what I am wearing and doing now is not causing any problems so I am going to keep with my Asics 2140's with Sole inserts for training and a lighter shoe for racing.  Although, I just got a pair of Newtons in and plan to try them soon as I have focused on more midsole/forefoot strike over the last 6-8 months.  I guess that is kind of stupid-satisfied with what I am using, thats working fine, but looking for something different/better.  Oh well, I never claimed to be too bright anyway. :

Lumberdad-I see in your logs that you have numbers such as "6 X 30=180" for example. What does that mean? Just curious.

I took it for a while a couple of years ago, can't remember if it had any effect.

That's cool about your hubbie, now you can train together. Will he get really, really competitive with you?  That could get interesting!
i saw a kid running in Vibrams last year at a triathlon (well, he was about 22 but that's a kid to me) and he said he liked them very much, although he had not put a lot of miles on them.  it was a sprint distance. Our local running store is going to start carrying them this year.  I guess they went to a conference somewhere and the barefoot movement is picking up momentum.

Be interested to see you the Newtons work for you. I have been using Asics since high school.

I am part of the Crappy Weather Challenge. Get points for workouts done outside in crappy weather. So I got 180 points for a 30 minute run. I won the challenge last year, thanks to Brewer. Currently in second place this year. I don't think the weather in Mobile would be cold enough.

Lumberdad-our crappy weather is primarily rain, heat and hurricanes.  Surprised to hear when I moved down here that Mobile was the wettest city in the country with most total rainfall annually.  Never checked but Dec. was really wet with around 16 inches of rain.

Weather is cold here - I have been running at an indoor oval (it is the ice arena where the speedskaters train for the olympics and there is a track around it) - always go the same direction which is counter clockwise.  I have run 3 times now this week and my left leg (inside leg) has been very painful.  I have never run on a track before - any ideas on how to take the turns better?

Is that near Miller Park? Been by it but never stopped.
We have a small indoor track at our Y, they change directions odd days one way even days the other. It is too small of a track so I never used it. Thats all I have.

Yes - it is the Petit Ice Center. The track is 466 ? meters.  So about 3 3/4 around is a mile.  It is nice temperature and beats running in the snow. It is about 20 minutes from my house so that is kind of a pain but I am going to be using it to train for Bostom.

That is so cool to have a track that size to use in the winter. I would think if you are using that track that often changing directions would help.

It would but the rule is to go counterclockwise. I was very tempted to go the other way yesterday
