Master 2042 Albany, NY | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season I'll do introductions first... My name is Rhoda and I've actually been on BT for a few years. More of a lurker at first but have gotten more involved over the last year through the challenge forums. I'm 35 and have 2 kids that are turning 6 and 4 this week. Most days, they keep me pretty busy... |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season I'm Jen. I've been on BT since 2004. I've done a bunch of Sprint and Oly tris and running races from 5ks to a marathon. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in about 2006. I gained a lot of weight around that time and have had a very very hard time losing weight ever since then. Ideally, I should be around 145 - 150. It's tough. I also love candy and have little willpower around snacks. |

Master 2042 Albany, NY | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season Got on the scale this morning and it said 140.1. Went to get in the shower and decided I didn't like that. So I went back, just to make sure my 1/2 sleepy eyes were not deceiving me, and the scale said 139.6. Only 2 minutes later. I did that 4 times. I'm going with it for today... |

Master 2146 East Side of the Bay | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season So for my bio: I am Kathy and like most women with that name, I am in my early 50s. I have 2 daughters age 18 & soon to be 21. I worked full time as a physician while they were young and gradually gained weight due to stress, poor eating and lack of exercise. I committed to losing the weight before my 20th HS reunion(1996) and after 5 years of increasing activity did my first sprint tri in 2002. I did 1 tri a season through 2004 but then life/work got in the way again. I left my practice in 2005 and joined BT in Sept 2008 on the recommendation of a friend. Since then I have gotten more serious about cycling and have been consistent in my attempts to become a runner. Still working on the freestyle swimming but getting better. I returned to practice 3 days a week 1 year ago (with a daughter in college I needed $$$) and am struggling a bit to maintain my workouts. I needed to have 2 skin cancers removed from my face last week and am prohibited from working out until after Thanksgiving. Thus my impetus to join this challenge and maintain or lose wt this holiday season. I had to laugh about others comments on not being active. I almost was prohibited from graduating from HS because I was flunking gym my senior year! I skipped gym alot. I had to skip all my other classes for most of 2 days to make up the time in order to graduate. My other teachers thought it was hilarious and teased me. They would be surprised now! |

Elite 3460 Slackerville, USA | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season I guess I should learn a lesson from yesterday and watch the snack intake. I got on the scale this morning and am down almost a pound to 198.4. I think I'll try it again today and see how things look tomorrow. It would be nice to at least get down to starting weight before Thanksgiving. |

Elite 3471 Evergreen, CO | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season My bio: I've always enjoyed sports, but I let working and raising kids keep me from exercising consistently until about 5 years ago when I started running again and playing tennis. I started training for tris in 2007 in hopes that the cross-training would make me a better tennis player, then found I had no time or interest in playing tennis anymore! Joined BT in late 2007 I think -- what a great community! My high non-pregnant weight was 152. When I train and eat whatever I want I stay around 145. My profile pic was taken in 2008 during my 1st HIM and I believe I was 135, which still seemed a little heavier than I wanted, but better than the 143 I'm at today! My downfall is having wine after work which leads to snacking which leads to a 2nd glass and next thing I know I've consumed 1000 empty calories. When I hit my low weight of 130 I had given up all alcohol for about 4 months -- then we went to Europe right before that 1st HIM and I had to have wine and have been heavier ever since. So my plan is to strength train after work rather than heading for the couch and go to bed early so I'm not tempted to indulge. Down to 143 today so it must be working |

Elite 3460 Slackerville, USA | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season Intro: My name is Paul. I signed up with BT in 2008 after I did a marathon and my BIL and I got talking about doing a tri. Neither of us did anything about it though. At the end of 2009 I decided to sign up for a local tri but then it filled up. I started looking for my first tri this year but then got sick or family things came up every time I put one on my schedule. Its been discouraging and I've thought maybe I shouldn't be doing this but I am determined and have my sights on the first tri of the season in April 2011. I've never been a good swimmer. I used to be a decent runner but something happened there. I love to ride my bike. All I have right now is my mtn bike but it works. My goal for the winter is to shed a few extra pounds and to get in better shape so I will be ready to go when April rolls around. |

Expert 1580 Ankeny, Iowa | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season Intro: My name is Stacie and I will be 34 this Friday. I have been on BT since about 2005. I work full time from home as a Network Administrator for a telephone company in Alaska and a mom to three dogs (including one that is 4.5 months old). I haven't done a tri up to this point since I lack the knowledge of how to swim. I come from a family of people that don't know how to swim but it is on the list to do. I have mainly a running background. Ran track and cross-country in high school until I had double knee surgery before senior year. Told me it would be difficult for me to run in the future - I would be prone to problems. Hit my highest weight of 150 in 2004 so I took up kickboxing after my husband deployed with the AF for a year. Got down to 136 right before hubby got back in 2006 (he ended up doing 2 years away) and felt great. We found out 35 days before he got home we were leaving Alaska and moving to Oklahoma. The weight slowly crept back. Up until this spring I was ok in the 142-144 range and this summer just let it all go. Now up to just under 150 and struggling to keep it off. I hate to say it but I think I gave in to peer pressure. Those around me that I hang out with in my neighborhood just laugh at me for trying to eat healthy and work out. My hubby needs to drop a couple doesn't work out but he is going to make an effort to do it when he gets home from the latest trip this weekend. Saturday the friends wanted me to drink and I said no since I had 12 miles to run on Sunday. They just laughed. I was like ok whatever. So I did a 1/4 marathon (that is how they titled it) in August, I am doing a 1/2 marathon this weekend and then going for some fun time after that. I want to find some "fun" things to do with hubby so it doesn't feel like exercise. Stacie |

Elite 3471 Evergreen, CO | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season Happy Birthday, Stacie!! eta: Some ideas to make training more fun w/ your hubby: my hubby and I joined a cycling club so we both have people to ride with at our different speeds on our weekly rides, yet it's time together before and after. We also joined the local racing club even tho we're not fast, so we are both doing bike races instead of him only sherpaing for me @ tris & dus. It also helps with training/diet to be hanging out with people of similar interests (altho the mtn bikers and cyclocrossers can drink a lot of beer!). Edited by skarl 2010-11-17 5:21 PM |

New user 31 Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Challenge: Weight Loss During the Holiday Season Hi! I'm Debbie and I am a 42 year old homeschool mom of 3 kids: 1 middle schooler and 2 high schoolers. As a kid I was always active whether it was swimming in the pond, riding my bike through the neighborhood or climbing trees. In high school I ran cross country and track which really helped me keep my shape since I worked at an ice cream store! College and all of the accompanying pizza, beer, and late night snacks without working out caused the typical freshman 10 weight gain. But I was able to shed it as my husband and I ran in many races including 1 marathon in our mid-20's. Fast forward to life and stress with 3 kids. Yes, I ran around after the kids but we all know that does not keep the pounds off especially if we often finish their meals. I also indulged in lots of ice cream as a stress reliever. But what I think really messed me up was moving to Wisconsin from Texas. I do like it up here but the lack of sunshine messed up my system. All winter I would hibernate and eat and then come alive in the spring and summer. For years I gradually spiraled down being diagnosed with slight hypothyroidism. But I was also achy and not sleeping well. Finally, my doctor saw a study that over 60% of Wisconsinites were vitamin D deficient. Winter of '08-'09, I was put on prescription strength (50,000 IU) vitamin D and I gradually started feeling better. I was able to start being a little active again the following summer and started to focus on eating well. Last winter I had the prescription again and by spring '10 I feel ready to really run again. By this point I was down 20 pounds. This summer I ran 2 half marathons and cycled recreationally weekly which helped my shed another 10 pounds. This winter I'm working on losing a few more pounds, flexibility and strength. Next year I'll run again and will be a LunaChix leader (women's bike group). I'm thinking about doing my first tri next summer, too, which is why I joined BT. I also have several encouragers around here! My husband is an Ironman and will be doing IMWI '10 and my daughter did the IronGirl tri in Racine. That's my story |
