I did the bike, the shuttle and a run:walk tonight (they didn't want me to run the whole time since they did new things on the shuttle and gave me longer on the bike to warm up)

Glad to hear that your wellness has been recovered! Now you just have to rebuild the advanced fitness component.

mbasta - 2010-12-11 7:56 AM I have been so busy lately...

-still trying to master my work duties
-now trying to master conducting functional abilities evaluations and writing reports at wor, on top of daily responsibilities
-moving Jan 1
-workouts (so impressed with myself that they are still happening!!)
-December...

I am hoping in 1 month I will have slayed the work dragon, but that will more likely be 2 months.

I hear ya!!! All the same it's great to see you working!

- Big trip with my mom this week (that's like compressing four very busy weeks into one, right there!)
- work hasn't slowed down any (got off the plane Friday evening and drove straight to work)
- dashing to put together a Tri Club workshop on very short notice (an Ironman champ who became a sports science professor offered to do one for free on his holiday here!)
- biggest performance of the year: a select vocal ensemble from our choir does a selection of holiday music for the Skull Ball, which is Bali's formal end-of-year blowout for The Industry (there's only one here, like in Hollywood). So a thousand guest and hundreds of staff, and fireworks to announce our entrance, outfits, makeup, the whole works, and an albino tiger cub.
- long complicated business meeting with Important Piglets today that I was leading, and also expected to do the hard negotiating because my two business partners--one is a former gangster turned shipping company, the other a petrochem engineer who works on rigs in cramped conditions with manly men--didn't have the balls to do it. I've been yelling at them for weeks that this is what they need to do, and finally they're like, okay, YOU do it. So I did. AND I called them out at the end of the meeting for not doing it. Boys.

So it's been a long complicated packed glorious week, and, as always, plenty of piglets.

Morning Crushers and congrats one and all on the great weekend workouts

I completed my second ever tri yesterday and while I am very happy with my bike and run I am, as ever, in despair about my swim. I have trained harder this year for the swim but seen zero imrpovement. If I could just come MOP in the swim I would be so happy - in fact if I could just not come last I would be happy! Here are the facts from the race:

swim (750m) - 18.27 (slower than last time even!)
bike (20km, time include T1 and T2) - 39.30
run (5k) - 23.30

Overall - 1hr 21

I should be happy, its 5 minutes faster than my first tri but the swim really marrs the whole experience.

I would love the benefit of everyones advice on how I should just suck it up and swim more to improve. Should I just swim for distance or swim drills or try to swim intervals...? How many times a week do you reckon I need to be swimming to see an improvement?
I am definitely going to add in a weekly open water swim because I went off course a few times so I think more open water swimming will help.

I am a pathetic swimmer, despite years of a coach ( I quit him last winter cause every time I asked a question I got blasted with how much I sucked).....and a series of private lessons.
My forced swim focus did help me, but I am still slow.  I am torn with accepting that for what it is and mad that I  am not any better at this.
Your swim time is STILL faster than me on a good day!
Yes, time in the pool helps.  Some drills help your form and comfort/ feel for the water.  If you have 45 minutes to swim at least 10 minutes should be drills.  Anything that helps you think about your form and work on the weak areas.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to start splitting my times in  the pool to 10-15 mins drills and then swimming 800,-1000m straight.

I wish for you that you were an awesome swimmer, but it does make me feel a bit better that I am not alone in this! Its so frustrating that we SHOULD be quicker for the effort we put in and fitness levels - dammit! Maybe one day I'll have a swimming epiphany...

Rachel - First of all...

Congratulations!!!  Catch me on the right day and I'd offer up my first born for those bike and run times!

Even though, I'm a former competitive swimmer, I stink at giving swim advice.  You can all smack me - I know I deserve it for saying - but I can swim a respectible (or at least what I want to swim) pace no matter how often I swim.  Let me think about this overnight...

And before you all really DO smack me...  remember that I'd LOVE to be able to run as fast as you!!

Havent been around much the last week, between finals and being sick I had little free time and the free time I did have was spent sleeping.  Finally feeling better, still coughing and congested but better.  Friday I finished up exams and we all went downtown to celebrate.  Being the one on antibiotics I was the DD but it was still fun to just go out and not have to worry about class anymore.  I witnessed my first fight.  We walked out of a pizza place and all of a sudden some guys who were about to walk in started punching each other.  One of the guys who worked in the pizza place had to come break them up.  It was kinda ridiculous.  Then Saturday I got an oil change and slept almost all day.  Then watched a movie with the boys.  This morning John and Ryan left and then James and I left around 2.  I got home after 5 and just spent some time with the family.  There's presents under the tree for me  I'm one of those people that has to shake and feel all my presents so my parents have gotten creative in how they wrap them now.  One year James even got about 10 boxes and put them one inside the other and made me open all to reveal an empty box but he did pull a little jewelry box out of his pocket right after everyone got a good laugh at me.  Hoping these gifts under the tree are some of the triathlon stuff I wanted

CONGRATULATIONS RACHEL!!!!!

You did the tri perfectly ... the whole point is to HAVE FUN and figure out what you want to try better next time!

Swim--even the best of champions continually work on form. Form first, function and fastness later. Get some swim coaching or lessons. You can always get video of yourself and we'll rip it apart I mean help you here.
