Nerdjock.. funny on the doggy paddle on most of the HIM swim
I talked to a friend of mine who said she did that on their first swim,, but said
she made up for it on the bike and running part.. ( I hope to do the same!!)

Phatknot...Can you list all the names of the people in the group?
I went back through the postings and seen a couple of lists but pretty
sure the group has grown a little. Thanks!

shout outs to nerdjock for loosening up the jeans-mine are getting tighter haha, and to Em, mgalanter, tri4fun73, nicruns, and rgator for hitting it up !!! Hope that weather is not interfering with everyone and that everyone is safe and sound.

I was offered dinner by a teammate to get in that icy lake with a wetsuit. I actually would have went in a speedo but I'll take the wetsuit if offered.Whether or not I get the dinner, is another question haha.

I'd like to see how you injured and less frequently posting folks are holding up too.  Need some more check ins!

Brick Wednesday here in the slayer dungeon today. Shanks listed it out as 2 hours bike and 2 easy miles after. I may double the run though. Our office is closed for the third straight day due to icy roads.

Slayer - I hope you're doing that 2hr bike ride on a trainer... unless your bike has studded tires...

I loved living in the south - anytime there was some snow/ice school and work closed down.

well, i've got some sort of a run (7-11k) this evening followed by an hour of master's swimming tonight.
should be interesting...
last night's run (7k) was precarious & slippery enough & that was BEFORE the snow fell Embarassed

i'm REALLY hoping the city decides to clear the roads of all this SNOW that fell overnight and this morning!

but i can't wait to get in the pool
(makes it easier to pretend that it's summertime again) Wink

& as for the weight loss, i'm CRAZY dehydrated (seems like on hard workout days, the 2L i take in on an average day just isn't enough-- that's something i have to work on), but i'm down...
a pound.
(i take what i can get!)

Swimming in the snow photo is awesome. I would have expected something more than a free dinner.

Still snowed-in. Did a 1 1/2 hour Spinnerval aero-base builder #2.    Hoping the roads will be cleared by tomorrow for a run and the Y will be open for a swim.

I swam 2500 yards at lunch today...and, yes, I did flip turns in the shallow pool.  I won't pretend they were perfect but even funky flip turns are helpful.  Looking into joining a new masters team.  I get kinda bored when swimming laps and I swim way faster when I'm swimming with others.  Swimming is definitely the hardest leg for me.

got to fitness center and discovered there was a swim meet.. so no swimming for me tonight

Instead.. I did all cardio..
50 minutes eliptical
30 minutes treadmill

When you miss training for a particular sport.. do you double up the next time it comes up?
or atleast do a little extra?

Funny you would mention the flip turns in a shallow pool. I'm pretty tall 6'5" and have gorilla arms. One of the pools I swim in is very shallow, 3 1/2 feet. I have no flexibility and can't form a very tight tuck but I've learned to flip and take one bounce off the bottom of the pool and then push. I don't do it every time but I do it more frequently when I get tired.

Hey everybody, sorry for the silence. I guess I've been in a bit of a funk. I have a sprained MCL but they didn't do an MRI or anything so I'm hoping thats all it is. Right now all I can do is baby it. Because of some other stuff I had to stop my masters membership so I'm actively trying to figure out a gym or alternative to that. It seems like everything is against me right now! I'm really hoping its just a short temporary situation. I know I need to take these lemons and make some lemonade, but it's not always as easy as that!

It looks like you've guys have a great group and I certainly hope to start participating soon.

Keep up all the good work out here.

We need to keep this thread hopping better. I had to go to page 2 to find it. Are you slayers?

Hang in there elheffe99! Do what you can to keep fitness and sanity...

rgator: "When you miss training for a particular sport.. do you double up the next time it comes up?
or atleast do a little extra? "

My coach always tells me to live for today and not to go and try and make up volume or workouts that I missed. However, I rarely can follow that direction (am getting better at it though). So my advice is to follow the common wisdom of dropping it unless your obsessive-compulsiveness is to the level where you have to do something extra to feel better. If you do make up some, be sensible.

At 6'4", I hate flip turns Peter. But I suck at them. In fact, i swim in my 250 yard lake for all the months that I can to avoid all the turns.

Well done to you guys. Whats going on training and weight wise with you today? I am doing my first swim in over a week. The pool is finally re-opening and some the ice thawed.

THANKFULLY (& yes sorry-- this goes against the slayer attitude!!)... hill training got pushed back due to a lack of snow removal on the planned hilly route...
so we got to do a nice & easy 7k instead

as for the swim (& i'm absolutely LOVING my masters group right now), it was fantastic!
but painful....
but in that kind of good & productive way that you need every now and again
lots of pull, arms-only drills...
good butt-kicking.

spin class planned for today
(& a whole lotta water!) Tongue out

and if i can manage to get out of work on time (or even just a LITTLE bit early...)
i might try & head into a LBS to try on some proper cycling shoes.

my cycling needs ALL the help it can get....! Embarassed

Great job on getting the swim in! I find it pretty hard to do anything after running. Thats why duathlons are so hard....

You will have a choice between tri and road cycling shoes most likely. I say get the tri ones. They are easier on and off.

swimming is my strength...
sort of feel like a one-trick pony at times
it's a FANTASTIC rush being one of the 1st out of the water, seeing all of the bikes still on the racks...
but is it EVER demoralizing getting PASSED left, right & centre, getting back into T2 & seeing those same bikes BACK on the racks again
:S
(i'm hoping making the switch from the mtn bike to road and taking many more spin classes over the winter will help my cause!!)

but hey-- we all have to start somewhere, right??
WAY too easy to get hooked on this fantastic sport!
(& no-- i'm not complaining!)

That must be nice to be able to swim fast. I'm always near last out of the water. Gosh how I wish I could swim faster. Then it would be on!

Was hoping to get some individual lessons which seems to have helped in the past but the winter has been rough so far. I'm not giving up getting them yet though.

nope!
definitely not!
WAY too early to be giving up!
(which is why i'm holding out hope that my cycling will improve)

maybe i'm slightly backwards.... but i'm hoping that by taking spin classes throughout winter and then working on building up my endurance in the spring (to a 75km bike ride in June) will help put me in a better position to tackle the olympic distance events this summer.

that's my main goal for this year!
(so that i can hopefully successfully complete my 1st HIM in 2012)
well that... and i'd like to PASS just ONE person on the bike...
JUST ONE!!! Innocent

2nd rest day. Another long day at work, last night a 2x4 clocked me in the front of the head and left a knot. I'd say my upper body strength is still there cuz I hurled that thing into a tree! Ok onto training. Rest today, tomorrow run, sat run, sun swim. Depends what the household 6 ( first lady)has in store for us. Hang in there everyone and have a great training day!

I got in a short 3 1/2 mile run this morning. It was freezing. The roads were still icy and the pool is still closed.

I'm not the fastest cyclist out there but I do get a thrill out of blowing by the fast swimmers since they tend to be the same ones that blow by me in the local pools during training sessions. I just pray they don't catch me on the run. This year is going to be different.

I had a private swim instructor for about 5 months last year. She was great. My swim times dropped dramatically but the trade off was all the kicking impacted my ability to bike and run. I would rather give up a minute on the swim vs 2-4 on the bike or run. I think the right answer is a good balance between the 3 events. How you get the balance? I don't know.

that'd be ME you're passing!
:P
& agreed.
i really want to work on my stroke mechanics (i.e. get a stronger pull) with the masters group.
my legs weren't really suffering on the bike... well, up until the point where i got OFF the bike & had to run
(or more like "run")
lol

SUCH a butt kick!!
but a great (& oddly fun) learning experience.
i'm hoping that spending more time in the saddle (along with incorporating more brick workouts when i can actually SEE pavement again in the city) will help shake that odd jell-legs feeling!

so strong bikers...
what's your trick/secret??
i've got a WHOLE lot to learn..... Embarassed

peter, you make a good point. you have to allocate resources for your best ROI (return on investment). I could swim 4x per week and get lessons and Im no sure i'd shave more then 3-5 mins off an IM swim and less for short course. and all the kicking does take away from bike and run a bit. I hated all that kicking when I did masters briefly in the early fall.  having said that I am still hoping to improve rather than back track and that seems to be the case lately as I swim less and less thinking its not a good ROI.

nicruns - i would say to keep it simple, the best way to get better at cycling is nothing magic; hard rides and long rides, group rides and  solo rides. shooting to up your mileage and pacing weekly. You could get a program to follow but it may not be necessary.

you might also consider some functional strength training for the quads, hammies, and glutes?

Makes sense!
I'm definitely looking forward to bonding more with my road bike when the snow clears out
i'm just hoping that what i'm doing now IS productive & will help me improve when it comes time to get back on the road again this spring....

next battle: actually DRINKING my water instead of dumping it on my lap
ugh.
i needed more sleep last night.

I think there is decent carry over from spin classes/sessions to actual cycling. Its not idea but you take what you can get given the conditions. I rode a stationary bike a few times over the winter break just to keep some of the cycling movements/muscular endurance.

All this talk about cycling is getting me hungry for some bike porn. This is the titanium timetrial (TT) bike I use-a 2005 litespeed blade. Added some di2's electric shifters to it last season. If you care to, post some photos of your bikes .
