No, I have never run on a treadmill here, though a few of my colleagues do.  I just go out and keep looking for good routes. There are some fairly quiet residential streets around, though from a distance runner perspective it is a pretty small area. Anything outside this area (kind of an expat and wealthy local enclave) is complete traffic chaos. Long runs involve a lot of repeat loops. As of this fall, I have a lighted, safe place to run after dark, but the lights are turned off from midnight on so early AM isn't safe. There are a lot of construction workers around and there have been some assaults, so I've become pretty safety conscious.

The place where I run at night isn't too bad--I can use it for fartlek or tempo runs but the footing probably isn't good enough for really fast stuff. Also, I can't measure it exactly. I adapt by just doing fartlek and tempo but not intervals. Haven't gotten to the point with my running where I feel it's worth joining a health club just to have a treadmill for speedwork.  It's possible the situation will improve in the near future--they don't call this a "developing" country for nothing!

Racewise, there isn't much of a running culture yet. There are only a few women here (I think they are expats) who can give me a run for my money in a 5 or 10K. We do lock horns in charity runs sometimes, but there are few. Organizing a race here requires language skills and legal connections way beyond me. We have organized an informal tri club at work and some teachers from another school just contacted me about starting a running club. With more people moving to this part of the city, things will probably continue to improve. Five years ago, I often felt I was the only woman runner in Saigon!

The vibrams, as our mentor said , are the "natural" way to run and help  with form.  There are other shoes that also help..Newtons are one.

Dave..you left out chia pets....I had to laugh too!

So....I applied to be a contestant on the Wipeout show many months ageo and I got an email to go and try out...the question lies...do I go to California and go on the show which will blow my race/training schedule.  I am thinking those people need more than a few recovery days!!!

We got my son the same game...it is awesome!!!   Regretfully, I sent my declination to Wipeout a few moments ago...too much going on at home for me to be selfish and go out to California.  Maybe I will try to apply again.  Decided to register for Door County Half Ironman.  I realize it will be a tough one but have a good feeling about it.  I live near steep bluffs so I have a great area to train.

Hope you all have a great time in Racine for those of you racing!

Just back from Daddy/daughter(s) dance   what a great time!   So much dancing I should log it.   But not going to.

Let's see  Saturday swim in the AM  then have to work (4 letter word)

Sunday  Short run and some cycling.

So not too adventurous.

This AM: 10-mile run with fartlek pick-ups. Think I over-did it--felt worse than actually racing a 10K. Maybe it was just the trafffic and what seemed like thousands of construction workers cat-calling.

Currently: Battle of the bike. No, not riding!  Finally took a wrench to the "baby" and managed to get the old pedals off and the new pedals on, and inflate the tires myself. Yeah!  Now, two more problems:

1. I can't get the cleats to insert into the pedals. Not when sitting on the bike, not even squatting next to it using hands. What is wrong?  I bought them at the same shop in US; the cleat is one of those specified on the pedal instructions. (Shimano SPD+ Flat type PD-M324 pedals; Shimano SM-SH56 shoes). Am I just dumb or have I been sold incompatible stuff?

2. My cycle computer, as of last week, won't work. Already posted a thread on this. It looks like battery is OK, it powers up, shows 0:00:00 and looks ready to start in each mode, but registers nothing when I ride. Magnet is on (I think--there's a thingy on the spoke), not far from sensor. ?????????

Later: Pool. Maybe some 100's tempo.

Tomorrow: Long bike plus easy (after today, very easy) run.

Will try to get in another solid week of training before going AWOL for about a week next Saturday PM--kayak trip in Laos. (We get time off for VN New Year.)  Considering it cross-training/ recovery/ mental health break (before I kill a construction worker, feral dog, or motorbike driver)!

Oh yeah and I was wrong about something the other day.

I guess line dancing is still around!   who knew!

So maybe those gorilla shoes really are the bomb! (do people still call things the bomb?)

OK--Clip-in issue solved. I think related to being a lightweight. I had to push down with a lot more oomph than I thought; probably more force than a weakling like me can generate while squatting on the floor. OMG how will I do this in a race!  At least getting out is easy. Will atttempt to ride clipped in for our Tour de Industrial Park tomorrow.

Good luck on your race!  Actually, I mid-read the original post in the thread so I thought they were talking about the Door County 1/2 MARATHON (in May).  I'm doing that race with my family, not the 1/2 Iron Tri.  I'll actually be doing Racine 70.3 in July so I'll be thinking of those working hard to the north!!

Okay--I have cleared the clip-in phobia, I think.  Did 35 km with the new pedals and shoes today in our beloved industrial park, without falling over. I was really concerned as I am a total klutz, but it isn't nearly as hard as climbing with crampons! Really didn't feel any difference in "power" or "speed"(such as it is) but hard to say as my cycle computer isn't working. About to try replacing the battery--have tried just about everything else!

Congrats!   BUT!  You will fall over....  its gonna happen at a light or something.  It will embarrassing, you will get scraped up a lil.   But you will get up, laugh about it. And then think. "Well that was not so bad"    I've probably fell over 7-8 times.   Once even on a group race whoops i mean ride.   In time yeah u probably won't realize how much the pedals are helping u.    Then one day you will forget your cycle shoes or whatever, then try and ride without em.   Then u will realize just how much they have helped.   It sort of takes time I think to acclimate and "improve"  your power through out the spin cycle.
