Kido - 2012-02-10 3:37 PM

I found that getting "normal" on the meds has helped with the weight loss, but more importantly, realizing how many carbs I take in.  Most of my calories were coming from carbs.

So starting off by cutting back on sugar and flour, is a BIG start.  So no breads and pastas and "treats".  And it's a great beginning.

I suggest a food tracker that breaks it down for you into carbs/fat/protein.  Then you can see where the majority of your calories are coming from.

totally agree with you... I've been lucky to "host" a couple of ultra runners/bikers for a local 48hr race.  what amazed me was they were not the carb eating machines you would think of someone that is going to run/bike for 48 hours.   They ate a lot of turkey/fish, veggies and salads.    Pretty much my carb intake is from veggies anymore,, it took a decent amount of weight off me and I feel better..  Sugar is pretty much not in my diet.

Got a 5K on Saturday. Hope to break 25 minute mark. It's a narrow trail run and passing is very difficult.

Hi Kido (Jim) & Gang!

My first race is creeping up quickly - March 11th. This will be my first tri ever and I'm nervously excited about it. I will be doing the short distance of 400m, 11km, 5km. Hopefully the weather co-operates especially since I live on the 'Wet' Coast.

Cheers,

Twink

Hey All,

I just had my first 5K on the 6th (Freezer 5s - 5K), and was very happy I set a PR fo 26:10, but as I said I tweeked my calf again in doing it. So I've been holding off to commit to the next race in the series, the Freezer 5s - five miler. It's been feeling a lot better, so I'll probably do a light run tomorrow, and take it from there. If that feels ok, I may just do the 5M, but at a much easier pace.

This series and a St Patty's 10K are my warm up to my HM on 4/22, so my first 'race' is really my HM. All my focus (and rehab) will be to make that happen. It was an unachieved 2011 goal - which I will achieve!

Best of luck Rusty and Twink - and Twink, you go gettem gal! (o;

Next race is 5K on 2/25 and a 3K on 3/2.  Having trouble getting motivated.

Best of luck in everyone's upcoming races.

My next race is June 24th IM Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. I am thinking of doing a race in March, not sure. I think the race is called the Leadman, I would most likely do an Oly. Is that a good idea?

I had a good swim this am as well. 3000m in an hour!

Good job everyone.

Not sure on the next race... Thinking an Olympic in June.  Repeat of my first and only tri so far...  Also trying to get my brother to sign up with me.  Official date hasn't been announced yet, but its a pretty big race, last year was 1600 people!!!

First ride on my trainer last night.  Felt good, but WAY harder than road riding.  20 minutes at about 25 km/h was tough.  Gonna do a couple more warm ups and then maybe start a program of some sort in a week or two.

Good luck to everyone on their upcoming races! Looking forward to hearing how you did and if you have any good stories to share from your experience.

Finally got a new (to me) bike that is the right size for me and I'm looking forward to my first non stationary ride today after I tune it!

So...this year I finally join a gym (the last couple year, I was using a punch pass to use the swimming pool only) Now that I have access to the whole place.  Im starting to like running on the treadmill!?!?! I know?  Probably wont last that long.  As long Im motivated I stick to it.  Any of you  run treadmill only or majority of your training mieage.  Do you make adjustment to your pace or the incline to make your running as if you running outside?

Definitely having trouble getting motivated...  Still having pain in shoulder some, PT is working a little.  Legs feel like lead when I try to run...   Work is pretty slow right now and weight is just hovering and not going down.

Any thoughts would be appreciated

I spent the majority of Jan just doing treadmill runs. The only way I was able to break up the boredom was to use the treadmill to do interval work. I did alot of speed work trying to increase my pace and I think it actually helped me. I will probably continue to hit a treadmill run once it warms up, but the majority of my runs will be outdoors, to me the treadmill does not compute to actual road time. I run faster outside than I do on the treadmill, so I am hoping for some faster paces this year.

I get into ruts like this alot, and what I have to do is find the one discipline that I get excited about agin, whether it is swimmin, running or biking, I try to get excited about one. There have been times that all I want to do is swim, and I use that to motivate me to do the other things. Other times I blog about how much I suck (talkin about me, not you) and sort of ramble and that gets me going, or sometimes I read race reports or watch youtube videos of races.

Second trainer ride... 24 minutes, 10 km... average speed of 25km/h.   Felt pretty wiped out.  Is this normal?  I mean when I am on the road, with stop lights and everything I can average 28 ~ 30 km/h for over an hour (moving time only, obviously) without much trouble.  Hold 25km/h for 24 minutes on the trainer felt MUCH MUCH harder.

Just wondering.

I recently got a trainer and have felt the same way. I pretty much have been doing intervals for either 30 or 60 mins at a time and always feel wiped afterwards. I'm planning on starting a modified version of Jorges winter program so I can incorporate some long rides to start preping for my century ride. Its still a bit away, but id like to start building my milage base.

On a diffrent note, my calf is improving and ill hit the trails for a short light break in run... again. At least I was on my way back up to half the HM distance before it went out again. Met with my ortho who says I must focus on the strengthening of it. He s 100% confident that will stop my reinjuring of it. I told him ill be holding him to it!

No Freezer 5M race for me this sunday. St Pattyss 10K on 3/11 will be next!

First trip to the pool in almost 4 months today.  Got 1000 meters in and felt alright, shoulder was definitely getting tired by the end though.

The trainer can be as tough as you make it. Just remember this, when riding on the trainer, 30 minutes of riding means 30 minutes of pedaling. There are no stop signs, no cruising, just straight pedaling.

I am really starting to rethink Ironman Augusta 70.3.

I want to race it, but the expense alone with registration, travel, lodging, food and kids being out of school is getting up there. There is a non IM branded 70.3 three weeks early in Nashville I am thinking about replacing it with. Since I already have an IM brnaded 70.3 under my belt, I am not too concerened with the IM brand being attached to it. I mean we are looking at about a $700 difference in doing Augusta vs. doing Nashvegas.

Plus if I did Nashvegas, it gives me an extra month to train for the marathon I have to do this year (by have to, I m ean I was so not happy with my time from 2011 that I have to redo it).

Decisions, decisions...

I think you should do Nashvegas, and then split the 700 you saved with me.

Really though, I totally understand doing the branded race, but like you said, you've got one under your belt, why go through the extra expense if you don't have to.  There is only one branded race in Taiwan at the moment, Taiwan 70.3.  I'd love to do it sometime, and if I move up to 70.3 will probably make that my first race, but talk about expensive!!!  The Olympic I did last year, with 1600 people was only 50 US dollars or so.  Taiwan 70.3 will cost over 300 just for race registration! and I would have to also cover hotels and the like.. ouch!

Hey all, how was the weekend?

I'm going to give a short vent - I did a short trail run with my brother the other day with only a little bit of a twinge to my calf, after about a 2 week break following that last 5K were I really ticked it off! So I started my HM training yesturday and was doing a 9:1 run/walk to simulate a short walk going through aid stations (still with a 9:40 mile) and felt like I could aerobically go the full distance right now. Unfourtunately, at about my 3rd repeat my calf was letting me know it's displeasure and at the 5th repeat, it screamed so loud, I needed to stop. I've justed started the stengthing program to try and help it and will take another week or two off from running... again. My HM is 4/22. I feel I have sufficent endurance to complete it, but I'm worried about getting my mileage up enough with this constant rehab.

Just a short bit of vent - any motovation you all could send would be truly appreciated!

I hope you all had a good weekend!

Hey Jambago, that really sux about your calf. Can you perhaps build your mileage at a much slower pace? Give your calf time to gain strength without putting as much stress on it?

My weekend went to hell in a handbasket. I gave myself Friday off because I felt rundown, but then spent three hours and 300 bucks at the vet ER on saturday with a vomiting cat, and said cat is probably going to need an ultrasound later this week - goodbye paycheck. But I love the cat, so what can I do?

I only managed to get in a short swim on Sunday. I was too tired for more.
