Since I've been plodding along in the 15mph range, it was a very pleasant surprise. Can't wait to get this new crankset out on the road. Run: Not this week either. Still dealing with pain and swelling. I'm honestly starting to wonder how my season is going to turn out this year... Goals: Keep the diet clean. Jump in the pool at least once. 10 Great Falls, Virginia | Subject: RE: 2015 Clyde/Athena Tri-N-4- Weight Loss Mentor Group - Open Mel, one thing I've noticed is that adult athletes who were really strong high school athletes have a hard time being patient (and kind) with themselves and that's critical for getting back in shape, or learning a new sport like running. I tell people that I'm really lucky since I was quite unathletic for most of my life so every modest PR feels like I won an olympic medal. You've likely got an edge mentally over a lot of folks like me when it comes to competing, but need to tell that high school coach in your head to STFU while you train and enjoy yourself doing it. ;-) Oh, and welcome. I'm a Northern Virginian too. In other news, my new modest PR that has me very satisfied is yesterday's Rock and Roll Half Marathon at 2:18. That's a 44 sec/mi improvement over my last half. I trained through a very crappy winter to do it which makes it a little sweeter. The whole thing is especially satisfying since running has been my weak event. This brings things more into balance. Weight-wise I fell off the wagon on MFP logging as I started to obsess about the upcoming race. I did manage to keep my calories mostly in line during the taper. I gained 3 lbs to 229 in the week leading up to it but I'm assuming this was the uptick in carbs and the water that goes with it. Overall I'm down 6 lbs this year. I learned a lot about macronutrients from this last streak of logging and I'll start it up again today. I'm going to try to go higher protein/lower carbs since my training cycle is lower intensity for the next 4 weeks. Dunno in anyone has any advice on that. Bike: still on the hooks in the garage, but Northern Virginia is looking at some fine weather this week. My bike always helps me drop weight. Run: time to de-emphasize running a bit while I catch up on the biking. Swim: I actually swam last weekend! 1800yds which is probably a PR for distance for me. It felt great. The next day I realized how much it took out of my hamstrings so I hit snooze on more swimming during the taper for the HM. OK, now I'm officially out of run training and into tri training. Excited! |

Workouts; I got all my planned runs in, for just over 2.5 hours total and the first time I have been over 20km in a week since 2013. I suppose one good thing about loosing all my fitness is that I get to tick off all these milestones as I rebuild it. Diet/Nutrition. during the week was very good, but was not careful enough on the weekend. I ended up loosing 1.5lbs for the week, taking my total to 11.5lbs lost for the year. This week, apart from the standard watch what I eat thing I am planning to step up the running, I want to run all 7 days this week, as the following week I'll be overseas for work, which will involve long days and little opportunity for training. So I want to bank some runs early to make up for the 'rest' week to come. |

Plan starting this week forward was to stay with my morning trainer for 20 minutes and increase run distance in the evenings, then increase ride time and distance when I can. Start stretching out to 3+ mile runs and get in the pool once a week. Did swim Wednesday for the first time in months. Averaged 1:43/100yd without much effort. Just did a quick 400yd workout but it felt good. My wife was sick all last week and I was helping her as much as possible while trying to avoid getting it myself. Well that didn't work. So now I've dropped all training to try and get over this as quick as possible. RAGE triathlon is only 5 weeks away, leaving just 4 weeks of training left. I don't really have time for this. :-( Sorry to hear that you've caught a bug. Hopefully it clears up soon and you can get back into training asap. But even if you miss a whole week, that'll still give you 4 weeks till race day, so lots of time left to train. Good luck! |

Had several people ask why I'd spend the money to rebuild a 1977 Nishiki steel bike instead of buy a newer bike. Answer: It fits me, hard to find a 64cm bike with the drivetrain I wanted for a workable price. |

1 | Subject: baby sprint tri in 1 month I'm Jen. I'm 49, 5'4'' and 175 and trying to get in shape once and for all. I grew up swimming and love the water- swam in HS and for fitness in college. Rode 6 miles yesterday but not quickly. Running hurts my knee. Have only done 5ks do date, and all of them have involved some walking. But I'm signed up for the bucket list tri in college station tx in a month. Ha! It's a 200 yard swim/8 mile bike/2 mile run. I can do the pieces alone and in the next month I'm going to practice doing them together. Wish me luck! |

Most of them can watch you run and talk to you about what hurts and recommend helpful shoes. Your shoes or your stride could be making your knee hurt more than it needs to. Also, consider researching "Chi Running." I have the DVD and the support of some friends who use this philosophy. It helps build a safer, more sustainable stride, especially for us older runners. It's helped me avoid any knee pain even though I'm 45, 6'4" and 225 lbs. I'm not fast, but I can run a heck of a lot farther than I could have imagined just a few years ago. Also, a friend taught me that some knee pain comes from tight quads yanking the kneecap out alignment. A quick quad stretch helps me get rid of some pressure on my knee caps. Good luck! In other news, I RODE MY BIKE OUTSIDE TODAY! You guys would understand the significance of this more than most people I know. That is all. Oh, and my extra 5 lbs of taper weight is gone. Back on the way down. |

When i started running about 2 months back I encountered a lot of pain from pes aserine bursitis, basically tight hamstring and under performing quads combining to cause inflammation below and inside my knee. I started stretching my hamstring at work whilst sat at the desk. Whilst sitting, place heels on the ground with your legs straight, pull your toes up towards you and then lean forward. You should feel a tightness and burn behind the knees, DO NOT BOUNCE! Doing this a couple of times and hour for 30-40 seconds, combined with icing and ibuprofen let me lightly run through until the pain diminished and i could start building both pace and distance. Not that i am in anyway an expert but it worked for me! |

That makes sense! It's really hard to avoid comparing myself now to when I was in good shape and could knock out 3400 yds in one swim session. I'm lucky if I hit a mile these days, but I'm working on it! Glad to see someone else from NOVA, and congrats on your PR!! |
