hello everyone.

I am struggling with figuring out how I gather my distance off the bike. I am using a spinning bike that is set up in the gym. It does not allow me track the distance so I am estimating. Probably bad Tonight I think I should ask how can I track distance.

I know when I swim that 33 laps equals a half mile. I asked at the gym, what I do not know and I know I stupid so sorry is how that equates in our tracking tools. Any help would be great. THNKS

you must have the wrong group, because noone in the VAMPS is stupid ! no such thing as a stupid question!

estimating distance on a spin bike is difficult - i'd start by estimating your average speed and then use that to calculate distance.  it can't hurt to ask someone there - or you could do the same type of workout on a stationary bike and then use that as a gauge.

1/2 mile in the pool = 880 yards. if you're swimming in a 25 yd pool you'd need to swim 36 laps (up one direction counts as one) to reach half a mile... 33 laps in a 25 yd pool is 825yds. how big is your pool? of course if its meters then we have another math issue upon us and i won't try it unless need be.

I'm not sure if I can help, but I'll try.  The distance on swimming depends on the length of your pool.  You said it takes 33 laps for a half mile.  Make sure you mean laps and not lengths though, because a lap is down and back.  A length is just across the pool. If you do 33 laps for a half mile, I think your pool would only be 25 yards down and back (12 yards one way), and that seems a little wierd to me because most pools are 50 yards/meters down and back. Anyway, you can trust what the life guard says.  One mile is about 1600 meters (a little more for yards, but not too much to make a big diff).  So, a half mile is 800 meters.  If the length of your pool is 25 yards, it is easy for you to figure. 1 length=25 yards. 2 lengths=50 yards, 4 lengths=100 yards, 33 lengths = 800 yards, etc.  That would also mean that 33 laps =  1600 yards (or a mile). Anyway, I hope that this isn't too confusing and helps a little bit.  You will probably want to check and see if the lifeguard meant laps or lengths, or just ask how many yards across the pool is.

thanks for pointing out the whole lap, length thing - most people use the terms interchangeably - but they really are different things. one length of the pool is going just one way - a lap would be going there and back. i say laps when i mean lengths too. sorry if i confused it more.

I finally got back to the 'puter and logged all my training.

So, are most pools 25 yards long over there? Does it depend on where the pool is, like the gym or a public pool etc? Almost all the swimming pools here are 50 meters long, olympic size. They are usually run by the local government (you know your city hall or whatever). Practically every town has an plympic size pool, even out in the country. Ours is very clean and a nice place to take the family with baby pools, play areas and even BBQ facilities. It is heated in the winter, but I think I will switch to another local indoor pool hen it gets really chilly (no, we never get snow here).

Also, I went shopping for bicycles last night. My bike is over 15 years old, I bought it in 1992. I am looking at a new road bike and I was so impressed at how light they are compared to my clunker. I am so excited about it, it is affordable for me, and I really want a new bike soon.

Anyway, happy training ladies.

Hi Michele!

I think pool size just depends on where you are.  They are usually 25 meters, 25 yards, 50 meters, or 50 yards. Alot of the gyms around where I live have their own pools, and they are generally 25 yards. The local goverment pools around here usually olympic size though. The pool where I swim is a local goverment recreation center, and it has a section that is 25 yards across and another section that is 50 meters across.  The public can only swim in the area that is 50 meters, because the 25 yard area is reserved for swim team in the afternoon and its open as a dive tank the rest of the day.

Congrats on looking at bikes. You will be amazed how much fun road bikes are to ride.  They are incredibly light and you will feel so fast, even if you are going pretty slow. I am excited you get to get a new bike! You will have so much fun!!!
