Subject: RE: PeterAK's Group: THIS TREEHOUSE IS FULL!!!

Tautery - 2008-01-24 2:03 PM My first event has this to say, but what does it mean? "begin a .25 mile, grade 6 climb back to [the transition area]." I'm already spooked because the thought of climbing much of any hill, and then having to jump off and run, is less than inspiring. But this seems even worse than that. Grade six sure doesn't sound like a gentle rolling hill. This will be my first. Worst case, I walk the bike the last quarter mile? Is that allowed? It's in June, so I guess I'll haul my bike and butt out there and try a few times before that, eh?

Ok - here'd my dorkness in action.  A grade 6 or a 6% grade means that in a straight section of the road the rise is 6% of the run.  At least I THINK that's what it means.  So a .25 mile "run" would mean the "rise" or elevation would be 79 feet or so?  Might want a second opinion

Does the website for your race have an route elevation graph?  Or if you know where it is, you can map it in your "routes" section of your training log.

I don't know, Pete - this sounds like a challenge.  We're gonna have to make a trip to Trixieville and open up a can of whoop-arse on her!

Perhaps we should all meet up in Chi-Town for the Shamrock Shuffle and settle this!

Okay, I gotta admit to you guys, I'm a bit disappointed that not everyone has been participating.  Please come back!  I want there to be discussion among all of us!  Feel free to tell me what you would like more of from me.  Have questions?  Want to share exciting breakthroughs?  Having difficulty making progress?  Having a ho-hum day?  Let's talk about it!

I've had a stressful week with sick kids.  It's been a real challenge to get my workouts in, but I am soooooooo close to getting all my time in at this point.  My biggest accomplishment has been getting my speedplay pedals back on my bike.....which I had taken off.  I had put regular old pedals on so I could ride it with my surgical boot on : )  My husband isn't around much these days, so I didn't have anyone to help hold it while I unscrewed the old pedals, etc.  So, major accomplishment, although it won't help me look any more like that Trixie pic above : (  I'm really happy with my foot--only one bad day really and I've increased my run volume significantly.  Now for speed..........

Hey - how was everyone's weekend?

I actually managed to get in 2 decent workouts - really cleared the mind.  Got an hour and a half on the trainer and ran my new longest distance - 7.65 miles - new knee felt really good.  I don't think I can use the knee surgery as an excuse much longer.  I was going to go longer but it was starting to get dark and dinner was going to be cold.  I also didn't want to add on too much too quickly, KWIM?

I may make tomorrow an off day.

Does anyone else miss not having football on Sundays?  I'm going through withdrawls!

After being in the house 90% of the time now, I really miss football. I told a friend in December that I was already going to miss football since the season was winding down at that time and she told em I needed a hobby. I must admit, I am much less interested now that Dallas is not in it.

As for training - what training? I went to my ranch on Saturday and walked around a bit there and went fishing at our tank. I was exhausted the rest of the day andit carried through to Sunday. I have a visit with a Dr this Thursday to hopefully get this whole mess straightened out. Until I can get back, get in some training for me!

weekend was good - Saturday was a "taper"

Race sunday was fun - different format - timed legs with set trasnisitions - based on total distance traveled so it it is definately bike centric

10 min swim - 750 yds / 20 min bike - 6 miles (18mph) / run 1.275 mil =  total 7.778 miles - i don"t know that compares overall or with the AG but we'll see - i am satisfied with swim and bike, run still has a long long way  to go - next one is in 2 weeks and I'll back off a little on the swim - maybe 100 or so and see if I can't get the bike and run up a bit - shooting for 8 miles

Spanglers, congrats on the long run!  Yup, you seem to be recovered and that's a good thing.

Eric, hope you get the low energy stuff figured out.  That's gotta be frustrating.

Dave, nice work on the race!  How long do you get for transition?  What type of bikes do they use?

How about the rest of the gang?  Tell us about your weekend!

I had a totally uninspiring computrainer ride Saturday.  The power is just plain missing.  I'm trying to eat better but haven't done as well with that as I would like.  Going to keep focusing on it.  I'm 21 weeks from the High Cliff half ironman so the clock is ticking loudly now!

Format was 10 min swim - 10 min transition / 20 minute bike (Precor Lifecycles - you can only adjust the seat and the resistance - NO standing in pedals - 5 min transistion/ 15 minute run.

Next one is in 2 weeks

well now race results are in and I am bummed  DFL in AG @#^!&%

Scheduled off day for me today - spending the day applying for jobs and prepping for a huge interview tomorrow morning.  But the temp outside is 41 degrees - I feel like stripping down to shorts and t-shirt and going for a bike ride!  Well....except for all this freakin' snow!  Better enjoy it today though - it's supposed rain tomorrow and then be back to a hight of 12 degrees on Wednesday w/ snow Wed - Fri.  Some global warming, huh? LOL

Dave - good job on the race - cute volunteers is a bonus.

Pete - if I'm still around and able I might actually see you at High Cliff (just the sprint for me thanks).

How about the rest of the gang?  Tell us about your weekend!

Couple of trainer rides and some swimmy action. Training of late has been kinda blase. Probably 'cause it's middle of Winter and nothing on my "event" calendar before late April (at the soonest). I need some sort of 'race' to look forward to.

I jogged for 30 minutes on Saturday, which is really huge for me. Hopefully my GPS watch will be fixed soon so I can measure some distances. I'm very torn about distance though. If I find out I'm only going 2 miles in 30 minutes, I might get depressed. I think it's closer to 2.5, but not the 3 I'd really like to be doing by 2009.

I made an appointment with an orthopedist for Friday. I'm very concerned about my limited range of motion in my shoulders. They're cracking and grinding more too. Swimming seems to be ok, though now that I've made an appointment, they hurt.

I really hope it's something fixable. I have a very long way to go in the training department.

Hey, what happened to the other reply I was going to post!?!  (technical difficulties with the computer today)

Anyway, I was going on about how I smashed my knee at the park, kids were freaking out, etc.

I did go to my CWW (triathlon team) kickoff meeting yesterday and am excited for the swim eval this week.  I also met my buddy who is my age and lives near me and made up my goals for the season:

-swim 1500 meters in 30 minutes or less by March 1st

-run a 9 minute mile or better in a 10K by June 1st

-do not get injured in the June 1 - Sept 1 time period  (yes, I'm a little accident prone and 3 months is a long time to be injury free for me)

-get fit enough to do both the sprint and olympic distance Rattlesnakes in August (back to back, Saturday and Sunday) without hurting myself, drowning, or having to walk.

Zilla - 2008-01-28 2:52 PM

I got in 45 minutes of junk in the pool.  Mostly playing around but I did swim a little.

Also did about 5 miles worth of walk/run in the freezing cold .. complete with snow.  I HATE the cold and don't even know how to walk in the snow but I lasted about an hour and fifteen in it .. I wasn't happy though.

Now I'm back in my warm temps and was going to do a canyon run but they have it all closed to hikers due to heavy rains over the weekend.  I will probably do a river path run later.

Tomorrow I get it back on the track!  Woo Hoo!

Z?  Zilla?  Is...that...you?  Is that really you?
