bryancd - 2011-07-16 8:48 AMHey all! Just wanted to check in, it's about 6am and I am watching the Tour live, having some coffee, with a small cat sitting in my lap! We are in Santa Rosa, CA and I am getting ready to race Vineman 70.3 tomorrow. Weather is cool and will be perfect on race day. Lot's of morning fog giving way to sun and mid 70's. Beautiful bike and run course through the vineyards. Did this race in '08, can't wait!
Have a great race!My training buddies and I are trying to decide between Vineman and IMCDA next year. I grew up about 90 minutes south of Santa Rosa. Beautiful area. Enjoy!

pbrown70 - 2011-07-16 12:37 PM I did a sprint tri in englewood fl. The weather was prefect 80's at the start end in the 90's. Water temp was 85 and wind light. I finished 2nd in my group clydesdales with a time of 1:15:10. I don't know what my splits are yet. They haven't posted them. I know I was slow in transition I kept fumbling around with my gear. My swim was kind of a weak point for me I kept swiming into people and stopping not sure how much time it cost me but it happended at least 5 times I was never really able to get in a rhythm. I felt good on the bike I think I averaged  21-22. My run seemed ok the only set back is both my shoes came untied about a half mile into the race I never bothered to tied them it didn't seem like a good idea at the time. I can never really tell how I'm running but, based on past races this is usually where I make up time. I guess I'll wait for the splits. Overall I feel good about the race I think that my time was a personal best by about 5 minutes I have to check on that. More good new is the guy who beat me is a world championships qualifier for our age and class and he is a  beast. I now have a goal!!!!

Congrats!! Sounds like you had a great race!

I am embarrassed to report I was unable to finish the swim. Water temp was 59 and at turn 1 I was struggling to breath and unable to slow it (my breathing) down. I tried to take a break on a Kayak but had to quit. I am struggling with my emotions right now.Several of my friends who are more hardcore Tri guys said this was the hardest swim they have done and several fought hard not to quit because of breathing issues.  Altitude and cold do not make for a great combo. I hope taking a mental break for three weeks will let me come back fresh and ready to hit it. Right now I am very discouraged at how this season is playing out. Thanks for all the support you have given me.

That's the plan. I am going for the AG win.

Sorry to hear that, 59 is cold! It just wasn't your day, don't beat yourself up over it. You'll do great next time. Enjoy your time off.

I wouldn't beat yourself up about the swim/race.  Even the most prepared can get throw off in an unusually cold swim.  That is hard to adapt to.

Take your time off and relax and come back strong.

I personally tend to stay away from the really cold swims.  Muncie is a great warm swim and Racine is a horrible cold swim every year . . . Racine is so much close too.

So I am so excited I got to meet Craig Alexander yesterday and chat with him for about 5 minutes, uninterrupted.  He is in for the Racine race and was doing a meet and greet late last night that I knew I couldn't make.  While I was at the running store the owner walked in with him.

So cool to meet with and talk to him.  Really a neat guy . . . and WAY skinnier looking in person!!!  I am going to watch the Racine race tomorrow and our Tri club gets some personal time with Craig since the running store is our sponsor and knows Craig personally . . . SCORE AGAIN.

Like others have said, don't sweat it. Just wasn't your day. That sounds like miserable swim conditions.

Do not be discouraged.  59 degrees is super cold. I can't even count the number of times I've DNFed, it happens to everyone.  I think you're spot on in that you have a 3 week break and then can come back stronger than ever.

I hope you have a good trip and let us know how it goes.

Terry - sorry to hear about your race.  Unfortunately what makes sports good and bad is that it gives you instant feedback and sometimes that sucks. a cold swim is a tough way to start a race.  take your time off and regroup.  you have learned moe than you think from this experience.  Get up, dust yourself off and keep at it!  you will come back stronger and crush the next one.

That looks great, Kelly!

Last year with all of me riding and tri-training, my mom was inspired to go out and buy a bike herself. She just a comfort bike (I think it's called) and just rides around the block and to get the mail. But it's a HUGE step for her, considering her age and health troubles she's had (I think she has 8-9 stents around her heart now).
