Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You guys talking about swimming got me thinking, and I've got a question for the group: which is your favourite/least favourite sport of the 3 and why? Obviously for some people we can probably guess (Chris) ;-) For me, swimming is probably my favourite. I've never been a fantastic swimmer, but I enjoy the sensation of being in the water. I also find its a great time to clear my mind. Where other people get bored I find it relaxing... A year ago I would have said running was my least favourite, but my running has improved so much that I enjoy it a lot more. I probably don't have a preference between running and cycling. They have different aspects that I enjoy and dislike. Anyone else? |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hope every one has a good weekend. Long weekend here in WA so going down south to Busselton. Hope to check out the 70.3 course. Be an easier weekend end on the exercise but have two big runs planned. Even the march challenge could not get me out of bed on time this morning for my swim. Disappointed. ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was only able to put a run yesterday and not the planned swim due to social activities. Forty minutes, five miles. Glad to see activity in the thread again! MARCH CHALLENGE |

Rachel: Tough to say which is the favorite because so much depends on the quality of the experience. Typically, I find swimming to be the least enjoyable especially if it is a cold day and I am confined to an indoor pool. That said, I have had absolutely brilliant open water swims on a sunny day in a crystal clear lake. Bceause I rarely get the chance to be in open water, swimming is generally my least favorite. While I was drawn to tris due to my cycling background, I think running has become my favorite. It requires less time, less equipment and still provides best cardio workout possible. I also find running to be the most cerebral. Since my swimming is sub-optimal, I find myself thinking too much and when I ride, there's too many safety/equipment concerns to zone out. Running provides me with the opportunity to be inside my "head" and sort things out. Regardless of what's on my mind, after a good run things just seem more clear. |

What he said. ^^^^^^ Except that I do get to do open water swimming more often, which I enjoy. I live on a lake, although I could walk across it right now (and not because I'm Jesus.) I have neighbors about 10 houses north on the lake, a couple who are both podium placers in triathlons, who I've made plans with to join on their OWS's in our lake. But like Joe said, with biking I'm always worried about not dying. |

I think I agree almost 100% with what you wrote. On my annual camping trips with my daughters I've had the opportunity to swim in the middle of large lakes and it is a blast. That being said, I still have not gotten comfortable swimming in a pack of people. Cycling is my first love. Bought my first road bike (Bianchi Campione D'Italia) when I was 17 with my savings. I rode that bike as much as I could - turns out most of my rides were on the IM Louisville course. I didn't fall in love with running until 2008 when I ran my first HM. Running is so much easier from a "fitting it in" my schedule basis. I also find it clears the head like no other. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You guys talking about swimming got me thinking, and I've got a question for the group: which is your favourite/least favourite sport of the 3 and why? Running is an old friend, biking is a new friend, swimming is an annoying sibling ( you choose friends not family). Like others running is a mental escape, in which I can turn everything off and turn a bad day into a good day. Cycling is fun, I love a full bore down hill, or a fast flat straight away. Swimming, I don't like swimming drills, I really don't like swimming pools ( I don't get to swim in one very often) or swimming laps and I really only get to swim regularly from June until the 3rd week of September. So I enjoy it the least. But some of my best memories are open water swims in our front yard with my wife on the dock reading my kids doing back flips into the lake and me doing laps in front of my house. With the kids occasionally harassing me or stopping me during the workout to watch a flip or them talking me into getting out of the water to do a cannon ball and then resume my workout. So, I can't honestly say I dislike it, but it can be a real pain in the backside. Edited by JBacarella 2012-03-02 7:58 AM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great Swim this AM with a swim coach!!! Already a huge improvement from my best ever 100y of 2:40 down a 100y of 2:14 (timed at the end on the drills and pyramid) Longest swim workout ever of 1250y. Later I will do a 10k tempo run. My hit the treadmill so that is is controlled. Roads pretty hilly and icy so I don't think it wise to run on the street for a tempo today. Esp since it will be my first tempo run!

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice 14.3 mile ride this morning (I think my longest yet), working on cadence - Avg 94 rpms. Something mental happened after my first race. In both yesterday's swim and this morning's bike ride it was somewhat "easier" to push myself. It's like after the first race my brain went from "just finish" mentality to "now get serious" mentality. Difficult to explain, but planning to enjoy it while it lasts. Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Managed to get in a 44 minute run on the treadmill. Not the workout I had planned. Tempo seemed tough so I ran 9:05 pace for 2 miles or so ans I ran 1 at 10... I recovered between the miles. Hopefully I will get my speed back soon. The race is coming up fast! MARCH CHALLENGE |
