Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Love the Bryan logging in under Jen's ID comment! I left out one very important piece of info - he does not like to exercise early in the morning. It's not that he feels like he needs to eat before working out, it's that by the time he decides to finally get his butt out the door he's already eaten, or had coffee. Or, it's after work in the evening, so he probably has something in his stomach. I've tried to convince him to get up early and go!!! Don't think about it, just go run and then you can eat and drink all you want. Maybe my question should have been - how do I convince my husband to exercise early in the morning? |

I told him he just needed to train his body to be able to eat and drink, and to start with small basic things like plain oatmeal. He's tried that, but still says he cannot have anything in his stomach before exercising. (Probably a ploy to not exercise - but that's another issue!) I know there are certain things I have to avoid (apples, yogurt, pretty much anything with protein), but I can train with food and drink in my stomach. Anyone have this problem and figure out a way to overcome it? Why does he feel he needs to eat something before a exercising? For performance reasons? If it's a session of 60-90 minutes, then I don't bother (only if over 90 minutes, but I have to force it down). I'm just not hungry right when I get up in the morning and prefer to train empty like that. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, and I'm sure there are easily digestible foods he can try to get down, so maybe others here will have some advice. Did someone give Bryan Jen's login info???? LOL. I like training empty/fasted training. It works very well for me. Even before I started triathlon training, I would work out at 5 in the morning on an empty stomach. It is very, very difficult for me to consume food before I train, let alone before a race. I just feel gross and full, and it almost impacts me negatively. I have had to make myself consume food before my long ride, which is the only workout during the week where I'll consume something before heading out (even then it's a banana or a piece of toast). Karen- has your husband tried eating a banana before heading out? What is he eating before his sessions?
This could also be why you bloat at races. When you do take nutrition in, you take in "too much" relative to what you used in training (nothing) and your body doesn't know what to do with it when its under stress. I never thought about it that way, but you could be right. Interesting. Honestly, I would feel fine doing an olympic distance race on just water (not saying my performance wouldn't suffer, but physically I would feel fine), because I've done some very long workouts with nothing. I always eat plenty after the workout. I've been using my long ride to experiment with my HIM nutrition. I don't want to practice, but I know I have to in order to be able to suck down the calories I need for that race distance. Perhaps we need to work on this aspect of my training, Kelly. Anyway, listen people - I took a gel with me during a run last Sunday......so there! Ha! |

The horror. ![]() I say the same thing EVERY time I consume something artificial like a gel or a bottle of sport drink.....the horror! I have always been pretty crazy about what I put into my body, but over the last 2 years, I've been even more particular. If it's not real food...meaning a piece of fruit, veg, meat, or whole grain, I don't want it in my body. It's been a real challenge consuming these things that don't even come close to resembling food. |

Jen - I am going to agree with you here...I hate gels and all the other sports crap they sell. I have been laughed at on long rides when I pull out the kids gogo applesauce packets, but they have just as many carbs, and although there is a little sugar added, it is natural sugar not artificial crap. I think the gogo company could make a killing if they marketed their product to athletes!! That said, you know I use the Hammer Perpetuem with no sugar in it and for me it works well for >60-90 minute workouts.
And Scott - I would ABSOLUTELY prefer a PBJ (LOVE IT!!) over any sport stuff. I would be that person! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What do you consider the time frame for "an empty stomach"? For instance, last night was my first hockey game of the season (we won, 4-2, but I let in a crappy goal so not REAL happy). Game was at 8:30pm, last thing I ate was at 2pm. Is that an empty stomach? |

People are always baffled when I pass up cake at birthday parties. If someone takes their personal time and puts some love into a homemade cake, then yes, I'll eat a piece. If we're talking some store bought cake from Giant Eagle or something, then hell no. My mother-in-law thinks I'm the most self-disciplined person she's ever met, but it's not self-discipline. I'm just particular. I'll eat 1/2 watermelon while they're sitting there eating cake, and I'm called an oddball. Whatevs. |

I think you can do fine on PB&J, bananas, and other food. Lots of interesting ideas in Scott Jurek's book. He eats burritos, miso rice balls wrapped in seaweed, etc. on long runs. He also makes these Azuki bean bars as a substitute for energy bars. I think it can be done but it takes some attention to detail/time. I cook 99.9% of my family's food from scratch, so I know I could do this for myself. Have to do a lot of research before getting there though. There are also lots of recipes for homemade gels. Even pure honey does the trick. |

Even pure honey does the trick. The trick is finding what you can tolerate, practcing wiht it over and over in training and then using it on race day. Lots of people have GI issues with fat and protein over the course of a IM legnth event. What works for Scott Jurek may or may not work for you. Also you have to remeber that Scott Jurek is running super log at way below his aerobic theshold, which make a big difference. When you are running that (relatively) easy your GI system is still getting blood flow. At an Olympic distance your functioning at above lactate threshold, a very different situation. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went to the ortho this morning. Good news -- Looks (feels) like I have a tear in my shoulder but he can't tell if its partial or complete without an MRI, so I'm scheduled for an MRI on July 29. Said even if there is a complete tear, I may not need surgery because I have good musculature around that shoulder that holds things together. Bad news -- The nasty bruise I have on my upper leg / hip is a partial IT band tear. If I don't let it heal, I could rupture my entire IT band. Right now he's prescribed the MRI and PT. I have follow up appointment on August 7. I'm still processing everything. I was prepared to handle whatever he said about the shoulder, I wasn't ready for the IT band issue. |

So the elephant in the thread ... what does that mean for IMNY? Or not sure yet? Does the IT band repair itself? Does it hurt in that area? I have only heard you mention the shoulder hurting, but did see the bruise. |

I have only heard you mention the shoulder hurting, but did see the bruise. No IMNYC. Its not worth the potential risk of injury to have a mediocre race. I don't want to rupture the IT band. I do that and Im finished. Leg hurts. I can't lay on the side. Any pressure on it causes intense pain. It just easier to ignore than the shoulder because I don't need it to do everyday things, I just need it to run.

I am excited but nervous at the same time. Hopefully this time tomorrow I will be feeling good about it.i would totally bring them to the local Y or whatever you have there and get them lessons first and you can usually get really good deals on lessons at the Y and such.
