90 minutes on the trainer with intervals, 7.5 mile run and 15 minutes of core work. I was up at 4:30 in spite of it not being a great night's sleep because of the baby and toddler so I'm ready for a nap now. Solid workout especially considering the sleep.

kaburns1214 - 2013-04-01 6:26 PM So I need some input.  I'm the RD of a 5K on a Wednesday night in June.  Its the first race I ever founded / race directed and its the little race that could.  As I've grown my other two races this one has kind of treaded water.  Here's the FaceBook page -- https://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Solstice-Sprint-5K/304037739662389 -- any suggestions on how to make a Wednesday night 5K special?

I like Scott's suggestion of making it a family event with a 1 mile fun run/walk. If you can do something with water other than water guns, that would be fun too but some people might be turned off by the 'guns'.

I would also look into a big ice cream bash afterwards - maybe a make your own sundae type of thing. Nothing says summer like ice cream. How many people usually attend?

Usually there'a about 150 -200 people.  It starts at 6:30 p.m. on a Wednesday night.  We've done post-race strawberry short cake in the past.  I like the ice cream idea.  I just need to figure out how to keep it cold.

Kelly - What about smoothies...all you would need is ice (vs worrying about keeping ice cream cold).

So I went out for an 1hr Z1 run with strides at the end. I averaged about 930 pace - which is a huge drop since I began running using HR in late Jan. I was shocked. I kept looking at my watch waiting for my HR to get above where it should but it didn't. I tried to explain why I was pretty happy with my run this morning to my 10 year old daughter as we had breakfast, not sure she fully got it.

That is so awesome.  The easiest (but not the only) way to measure progress is to see your pace drop at a set HR.  The nice thing about the drop in pace at Z1 is that you've also dropped your pace at all other HRs meaning you're that much faster when you go all out as well.

So I'm trying to somewhat wrap things up at work, getting a massage this afternoon and then going for an easy swim/run, packing and leaving for Texas at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning.  It will be warm, so that's a positive.

I'm a bit ambivalent about racing this weekend.  Galveston has the potential to be a very fast course but I'm carrying around 10-15 lbs more than I was at IMFL, which is both a mental and a physical handicap.

Had a good day: swim, bike, and run.... only ate a banana and boy did I bonk.  That is not fun!....have to be smarter about this.

There's actually quite a few people from my local tri community coming down to do this one. I'm sure you'll both do well.

30 minute recovery ride, 2500 in the pool, 2 mile recovery run and 20 minutes of core work.

Sorry about the double post.  Sigh.  It's been that kind of day.

I'm thinking about switching pools.  My current pool is 5 minutes away and opens at 5 a.m., but the heater is always broken and they take forever to fix it.  It's not the cleanest pool either.  It's LA Fitness and that's what I expect from them (you get what you pay for).  Brand new YMCA built and it's 12-15 minutes depending on traffic.  Hours are the same + they have swim lessons for the kids.  I'm going to check it out before I pick up my race packet on Saturday.

Sorry I have been missing. I have been fighting what I now know was an ear infection and upper respiratory infection. Doing better now that I have had the right meds and actually got back on the bike this morning for a short 45 min ZR/Z1 ride. Feels good to not fighting my body anymore for its energy.

It's a little cool right now, but race day should be high of 76-80 with a nice 15-16 mph wind.  So typical island weather for this time of year.

Interesting workout today. Today's the last day before my recovery week. I may do a light swim and some core work tomorrow but the last big day for the legs anyway.

First thing was my heart rate on the trainer was running 8-10 beats high for my specific effort which in itself isn't that interesting but my legs were actually alive. Normally when that happens I have dead legs.

Second is I had to run at lunch because my wife needed to be somewhere this morning. This is the first time I haven't run within an hour of getting off the trainer or 10 minutes out of the pool in a really long time, maybe 4 months. So the first mile my averager HR wasa 164 even though the effort wasn't nearly that but as I'm running my legs were again really alive. Felt weird not being competely warmed up already. Second mile was only 140 average and where this was my last big workout I was going faster than normal. I put in a solid 7 at 8:22 average pace and the last mile is all uphill with some good inclines and I still felt good at 8:02 pace.

Really not sure why the heart rate was high this morning. I figured fatigue being at the end of the three week cycle but it was a high quality workout especially given when it was so I'm not sure.

Thanks Matt. Nope snow is still around. I am contemplating taking a few days off in a week to take Elsa skiing/boarding at Jay Peak as they just got a foot of snow and have 100% of their trails open.

I've felt physically rotten the last couple days and can't tell whether it is allergies or an honest-to-goodness cold.  I had a moderate swim this morning after taking Thursday and Friday off.  I usually feel energized after a workout, but feel wiped out today.  I'm going to see if my bride will let me crash for awhile and then see how I feel when I wake up.

Really frustrating, too, since it is beautiful, spring-like weather outside both today and tomorrow for the first time this year.  Sigh.
