Nice job Jackie!  5 minutes faster than planned is always kickin.  Just think what you can do for your next one now that you have one under your belt and know what to expect.

Hurry up on the RR.  I am anxious to read it.

I ran 5 mils on the DREADMILL tonight.   AWWWWW! How I hate that thing.  It has been so long since I went more than a mile or two and I had forgotten how much it sucks!  I hope it is the last time I have to run on it for a long time.  I got 5 miles in but I had to get off after the 3rd mile to get some water.  Running outside in 20 degree temps and then into 70 degrees is a tad bit hard to adjust to right away.  I would never go out without a small bottle for 5 miles or more but I forgot to have anything ready for tonights run.

I HATE THE TREADMILL!!!!!!!!!!!

I actually don't mind running on a good treadmill.  The only time I can't stand it is if the belt can't handle my weight...meaning I can feel the belt slowing down each time my foot strikes.

Other than that...I can go up to about 8-10 miles if need be.  Definately not preferred...but doable.

I used to be ok with it, then i learned how much fun long winter runs could be, and i have not looked back..

Training is going well, and my run is slowly coming back. hit 52 miles this past week, and looking to be mid 50s next week and 60 the week after.

LOL...for me, it's almost never about weather.  More so about time and daylight.  If I have to run before or after work...I prefer not to run when it's dark.  Just too much stuff to trip on or roll your ankle on where I run.  There's also quite a bit of traffic for me to drive to a good area to run...so it saves me a lot of time to just use the treadmill at the fitness center I have in my office.  Full showers available too.  Otherwise...yes...I would always run outside.  I would never drive to the gym just to run on the treadmill.

see i'm the other way around, evenings/nights are my fav time to run and i typically do at least half my weekly mileage during the night/complete darkness.

I love running at night too...just not around the areas I live/work.  While I was dorming in college, I loved to go out for a 2-3 mile run in the middle of the night around campus.  Peaceful, quiet, and could just let my mind wander.

I try to avoid running in the dark.  I hear you guys.  I used to love running at night, but after turning my ankles a few times too many (bad enough to see stars), I decided it was best to try and run during the daylight hours.

Treadmills: I've done quite a few miles on them in them in the past while traveling, but go with the outdoor runs these days.  I only did one run last year on a treadmill when it was really icy.

Winter is here.  It was about 40 degrees when I got out today.  40 degrees is okay, but much less so when there is a 20 mph wind blowing in your face.

x2 on the treadmill.  I can do up to about 30-35 minutes before I start losing it.  However, I do run a lot faster on the treadmill.  I think the combination of no incline and being able to see exactly how fast you are going is the reason there. I try to avoid the dreadmill however, lately the roads & sidewalks have been ice covered.  Don't want to injure myself right when I am getting into a nice, continous routine.

Having to take a few days off b/c I have picked up a cold and feel like crap. Hopefully, I will be able to get a least a run in tomorrow (and preferably outside!).

My legs are finally starting to feel really good for this Sunday's marathon.  I just have an easy 4 miler today, and a 2-3 miler on Friday scheduled.

Hopefully the weather will hold up this weekend.  It's supposed to rain pretty hard tomorrow and friday, and the rain is expected to continue into Saturday, and a 40% chance on Sunday.  I don't mind a little rain...but not looking forward to puddles and soaking shoes.

The weather also seems a bit cooler this year than last.  It should be in the high 60's for the start.  Yeah...call me a wimp...but 60's is freezing for me.

winter is def here. Been running in 30-36 degree weather the past two weeks, been ok so far with a jacket, hat, gloves and shorts but any colder and some tights are going to be needed.

Runs are going well, finally have new shoes and loving them (brooks racer ST), and milage is going up still. very happy with how things are feeling considering the mileage.

Good luck with the marathon next weekend!

How many miles do you put on a pair of shoes (generally) before you retire them.  I somehow settled on a number of 500.  I still have a couple of pairs that have 500 on them, but have yet to throw them out or donate them.

I just got another pair of shoes last week (Saucony ProGrid Ride 3).  Won't be using them for the marathon, but tried them out on a 8 mile run and felt good.  I anticipate I'll buy another pair to rotate with for next season.  Mostly a training shoe...too heavy for shorter racing.

What i do, and what is recommended are not the same thing, but, i tend to go until something either comes apart, or things start to hurt. little aches and pains start popping up and its time to go for new shoes.

My zoots would normally last about 500 miles (about half of that on trails). I got 1k out of one pair before they just ripped in half.

Bigger runners/those running in the heat/humidity will wear them out faster than smaller runners, and trails normally eat them up faster.

And, last bu not least, shoe models/brands all come into play as well.

That said, i normally get 400-500 without issues from most ltwt trainer type pairs, But still base how my feet feel on new ones.

Running outside is the norm for me all winter.  I almost never run inside on the Mill unless it is really bad.  Monday's treadmill run was because I had been outside in -1 wind chills for much of the day and I didn't feel like fighting it for my run.  I have ice cleats to run in when it gets slick out and they seemed to work well last year.

Edit:  I also don't mind running in the dark.  I have some lights I hang from my belt and around my sleeve and I wear a head lamp to provide additional lighting for the run.  I am learning to run outside in the dark and I am developing a liking to it too.

J, what's the name of the of your marathon?  Good luck on the race!

I just completed a 500 TT in the pool.  I didn't plan it very well and kinda did it on a whim.  The problem was that I did 8x100 speed sets and then a 100 kick w/fins and then hit the 500 TT.  I think it was a bad idea to try to work a TT in after the 100's.  I was pretty much done after the 100's and was crap after the 500.  I won't be doing a TT that way again.  In the end I slightly bested my old time but only by :02.  My new time, I hope won't stand for long, is 7:16.  My last TT was on May 26 of this year.

dirk nice job on the swim!

I talked to my parents this morning (north of columbus), and they said its been COLD the past two weeks and very windy. Not at all missing that weather. We are getting our first serious cold tomorrow (first time under 25 all year). Its been in the 30s all week and actually pretty pleasent to run in.

I got in an 8 miler tonight with 2x2mi @5:40 pace with a friend. Felt pretty good the whole time and i'm loving the new shoes. First 5k since back training is coming up on sunday. VERY slow course, with 6 hills and 19 turns over the 5k but a blast to race it as you are constantly shifting around and changing direction.
Really just looking to best last years time, as with the nicer weather this year its sure to attract some faster runners (i placed 2nd last year about a half 2nd off first with 17:44, so no way that will place me if anyone fast shows up.

Is this the Honolulu marathon or a dif race?

I had my hardest trainer workout to date tonight.  It was only 45 minutes but the intervals kicked my tail pretty hard.  I only had 45 minutes to be able to ride and then shower and leave for band practice, so I tried to make this one really count.  I went 5 x5:00 w/2:00 with my HR in the middle of Z3 for me.  My computer said I was averaging speed of 25mph and my legs were kinda screaming at me some.  Mostly it was my fitness that seemed to be the challenging part.  I was huffing pretty good toward the end of each set and it took most of the 2:00 rest to get my HR back to where I could breathe again.  I am goign to plan more of these harder workouts I think but I will try to make them an hour long when I have that kind of time (which will be most o the time).

My distance at the end was 15.6miles in 45 minutes for a 20.8 mph avg.
